Incidentally, their coach for most of the time they played together, Scotty Bowman, says Savard was the best of the three.
I wouldn't argue with that. Serge Savard was one of the greatest and I also think one of the most under rated.
My dad use to tell me if Savard would not having broken his leg he would have been right there with Bobby Orr.

I remember the first of the two times he broke his leg. The goalposts used to be planted into the ice and he slid into it. Was in real agony. I believe they replaced the posts with magnets by the following season, no doubt influenced by his injury. He was a rushing dman like Lapointe before those injuries but he became more stay at home afterwards, still had a great career.

Edit: pulled out his autobiography and there is a chapter called Misery Strikes Twice. The second injury was from a Bob Baun hip check where he somersaulted.

I thought they replaced them with magnets in the 80s. I seem to remember that anyway… ping time ago.

Savard broke his leg twice. I think '69, then again in '71. The second time was bad.

Sounds like Scotty was treating Savard with flattery. He wasn't the enforcer Larry was. Nor as explosive.

For every game Orr played, Robinson played 2. Plus another 100 games.

Orr was on a different planet than Robinson or any other NHL D. No comparison

Big Bird is without question a top 10 defensemen of all time, top 6 for me.

If you were building a 6 man D corps to win the Stanley Cup, who are on your three pairings? Much different than best players, sort of.

Orr - Potvin
Robinson - Bourque
Pronger - Chara

I like it, but I’d have to find a spot for Lidstrom.

he is top 5 ever... he ran the ice as a HUGE policemen and yet was good on offence. He should phily back in the day, that he was not letting them run around.
Do you remember Sunday afternoon game when Robinson destroyed Schultz? Who at time was league heavyweight champ. It was probably brawl of all brawls in our franchise history. Given the impact it had on our future

That game turned the Habs from good team to dynasty team.

I watched that game and it was a 2-2 tie. This was 73-74. The Flyers won the cup that year and the next. Schultz deserved that ass beating. I was proud of the Habs that day, they absolutely did not back down and I would argue manhandled the Flyers physically that day.
Watching Robinson hammer Schultz at will was a good memory still etched in my brain.

There’s just no way to not have Doug Harvey.

Saw a bio on him and they cited the Schultz fight and how important it was at the time. Robinson did not like the way the Flyers played hockey.

They also cited a play where he checked Gary Dornhoffer intro he boards so hard that he broke the boards.

Don’t mess with Big Bird.

Bird vs Schultz at 1:45 mark

I was 12 years old watching a NBC Sunday afternoon game with my dad and brother. Tim Ryan and Ted Lindsay calling the game. Serge Savard also got a 5 minute major that game for a vicious two handed crosscheck right to the face of a Flyer. This game had it all.

The Golden Age of hockey

Bird taught him a serious lesson.
Yes, and Orr, Lindstrom, Potvin or no other defenseman could do that.
