I just keep shaking my head at all the doomsayers regarding a Larkin trade. He’s a top 15 center with 5 years to go on a very reasonable contract and is in his prime years. He’s shown that he can play any role a team needs and would flourish as a Robin to another teams Batman. He went into both the 4 Nations and Olympic teams as a role player and ended up being one of the more important pieces, outplaying Matthews and others. So yes, he’s worth 2 blue chip prospects, because Larkin has proven he can be a top center in this league and adjust to any role he’s given.

The challenge is that team's trading the best player almost never win the trade.

Dylan Larkin by himself returns a maximum of one blue chip prospect. The amount of additional lesser assets he brings back is debatable, but there's no team in the league that will give the Wings two high end kids for just him.

I mean, one year after drafting Edvinsson, would you have shipped him and Raymond out for a 30 year old center? Or would it be more like one of them, a lesser prospect, and a pick?
screenshotting this to shove it in your face with how incredibly wrong you are. 5 years of a near ppg center that can fill in on the top line and not look out of place at a very good caphit is worth more than you think it is. you have to remember, his contract is part of the trade and his contract is easily absorb-able by the top end teams

For a team that's ready to go all in now like Florida or Minnesota? Absolutely. But neither of them have any assets I really want.

For a team like San Jose or Anaheim that has all the time in the world? Not a chance.

Utah is somewhere in between those two scenarios. So we'll see what their GM thinks.

Maybe we should stop looking at where these trades are lopsided and one side wins and one side loses.

I happen to think if we trade with someone like Utah it could be a win-win for both sides.
I think you could make a really nice trade work with Utah, even if you had to include Cossa. I think you could also get something interesting out of Anaheim and San Jose. What I don't think we can get is equal value in terms of every-day NHL regulars. The people who want that back in return are the ones who will be disappointed.

Without knowing what's legitimately being offered (not rumors or trash from talk radio) and what Yzerman expects/is asking for, you're just telling us what Larkin is worth *to you*. In a bubble, he might be worth just a single blue chip prospect. Add on a few competing teams who want to take that next step and see Larkin as a way to fast-track their way to greatness, and that can increase the price, much like an ebay bidding war.

Depends on the specifics. Obviously every trade is unique.

historically and generally speaking the team trading the better players loses the the trade

This is interesting.
I recall seeing a couple tweets about the idea of a Robertson-for-Larkin trade. I think both sides would walk away from that one quite pleased. Dallas adds a 2C at a discount, and we add another 40-goal scorer. The biggest question mark though is, what do we do about centers?

The issue is that there is strong potential you end up paying 14 mil to a non 40 goal guy if our best potential center is Kasper. DBC did manage it with Copp last year but that isn't something I'd 100% count on.

If we were to do that kind of trade I'd be shocked if we didn't bring in EP40 too.

He won’t get 40 goals with no centers

Define “win the trade”. If anyone is expecting to get a top like center back, then we won’t “win the trade” but i expect to get back NHL ready prospects that can possibly play next season, but for sure in 27/28. Many teams have kick started their rebuilds by trading their best player(s) and I expect the same result here

Stepping back from all the noise; I'll feel better about the course of the team if one of Kasper or Karate Kid takes off at center next year. If we get 40ish points, consistency and improvement throughout the year that will be huge. If they both start to emerge then the Larkin situation is much less of a potential crisis.

We really need one of those fools to hit. I think Finnie can become a realgud middle/bottom 6 center. It's a bit of hope at this point, but if it happens then the center situation may not look so dire going forward. And ya gotta nail the Larkin trade, Stevie.

So, what's the argument here? "Jason Robertson will sign a 8x$14m deal to play in Detroit, but he might not put up 40 til we get a center"? Or, what, do you think Yzerman would (or should) pass on Robertson, if he were offered, simply because our "best potential center" is Kasper?

Regardless of your beliefs, how do you go about replacing the 1c? Thats the big issue. Because you won't get an equal value back.

Best case scenario would either be a top 10 draft pick, or a top 6 winger + a pick. Maybe you can package cossa and larkin to bring in a 1c. Either way this really hurts the red wings organization as a whole in the immediate future, it makes us less attractive for free agents or players with ntc/nmc
It’s looking like next season may be lost already and that stings but it was always going to be an uphill battle signing players. We had guys not waiving to play for us even with Larkin and that wasn’t going away until we shake this loser identity

I’ve chosen to get excited about the idea of either of Desnoyers/Iginla and them being future stars it helps to cope. Yzerman has a ton of good assets to get younger and we kind of like the defense/goaltending in place. It’s definitely an accelerated rebuild compared to 2019

Who knows man we’ve been waiting for the puzzle pieces to fall in place for 3 years now maybe Larkin and all the pieces going in/out this team will actually like playing with each other and be fun to watch and have some guts
