I'm not really defending Larkin here, but Yzerman has done a lot to be critical of. But I've always understood why people were critical of Larkin for saying that in public, even though I've defended it.

Think this is really a blessing in disguise, disguised as a gut-punch. His cratering play in the spring will be what is always remembered of him. He's not good enough to carry a team. If he gets a ring, it'll be as a secondary piece ... he's also banged up pretty good. His speed is everything ... if that fails, WTF is really left?

He's a good finisher, but yeah, his speed is his best asset. He better hope it holds up into his thirties.

I’m a bit surprised Larkin chose to go this route. I had thought ideally he wanted to see this through and come out the other end on a redemption arc.

Quitting now is basically a way to ensure you are the bad guy.

So puckpedia says he has a full NTC right now, then a 10 team NTC in two years. Doesn't look like that makes it a better idea to wait. But you're definitely right it's a concern.... but I still think his value will get us something really good.

Leaves an extremely bad taste in my mouth... and gut. But with how handcuffed this team was by contracts, the market and etc, this can genuinely be a good thing for the long term state of the team. Absolutely crucial that Yzerman (or whoever) not f*** this up.

If he's requesting a trade, he's going to play ball. This getting out is almost surely going to result in a lot of conversations with interested parties.

Yzerman will do right by him, but he's going to get the best deal he can get.

As of this year, we are the worse team in our division. Tampa and Montreal are elite, Toronto is getting McKenna, Florida will rebound and Boston already has. Buffalo won the division and went two rounds into the playoffs. Even Ottawa has made the playoffs the last two years.

Y'all can make up all of the trade scenarios you like. Any comparable player worth having has a No Movement or No Trade clause. And, if Dylan Larkin, the hometown boy and captain, doesn't even want to be here, who's going to wave to come to Detroit? What free agent will even talk to us?

Is Cat going to want to stay here? Why would he? Ed? Anyone without a long-term contract?

While I fully admit that Larkin caused assume of the issues here, I will be genuinely stunned if Detroit gets anywhere close to good value for him in a trade, let alone if the roster is still watchable in the short term.

It's possible that he doesn't get moved. But right now it feels like there's a lower chance of the Wings having a good off season than the chances that I'm done watching this team for a very long time. Talk about a craptastic way to start a summer for the franchise.

Bro. This is crazy. I'm quoting you because I can't believe how the cascading effect of trading that 1st for Faulk has butterfly effected it's way to Larkin asking out. I must be really dumb because it's completely mindboggling. How do you trade a 1st, then two months later your captain wants out. I have no clue what Yzerman does here, but he does have a track record of situations like these when he was forced to trade Marty St. Louis out of Tampa when St. Louis only wanted to go to the Rangers, and that worked out for Tampa.

I'm flabbergasted because all of the discourse around Larkin seemed so farfetched to me, so I apologize to everyone who believed this was an actual possibility!

My opinions on trading (or rather, not trading) a 1st + for a mid 30s year old were based on not believing in this team's ability to contend over the next 1-3 years.

I never imagined landing here though..
