I don't know about you guys but he's alot better defensively than I thought he would be. I also wasn't penciling him as a hughes makar tho like some were -.-
I didn’t know for sure how good he could be but when people were saying he OBVIOUSLY couldn’t be as good as those 2, I couldn’t disagree more. His upside is enormous and that was clear fairly quickly. You don’t dominate the NCAA as an undersized freshman D like that without having elite upside.

The obstacles were real though. People keep saying ‘I kept hearing he’s a bad skater’. He was never ‘bad’ but he’s also vastly improved it since being drafted. Kid’s must’ve put in an insane amount of work there.

He’s special. I don’t think teams or players are gonna adapt to Hutson just like they haven’t adapted to any other elite players. That’s not how it really works. Hutson will more often than not adapt far better to any obstacles than the run of the mill players of the league.

What’s more likely is he’ll begin to wear over the course of this year. It’s a huge leap. But who knows. Maybe he’ll be fine

The best is that we had a vocal contingent of the board saying to trade him before his weaknesses got exposed, etc.

This same stuff is prevalent for other players that are currently on the team. I mean look at Jiricek, he was a 6th overall pick and he went for a depth defenseman and what will ultimately be a late 1st in a bad draft. You very rarely can trade someone and get the assets back that make it worthwhile. Most of the time, especially in a rebuild, you are better off working with the player and getting them better in house.

If someone said to me in July that Hutson would end up with more points than Slaf in December. I would have laughed at him. 16pts for a rookie is pretty impressive.

I forgot, there's also a contingent that seem to hate on every player we ever have. These people are out on anything the minute they do something, however small, that is not what they would do.
What he is doing for a 20 years old dman is impressive. People who don't see a potential first pairing QB in him are totally blind.

He's already 21st for points among dmen. 5 points in his last 4 games.
Still need to learn to pinch. He'll never score more than a few occasional blunder goals from the blueline with his shot. He must do line Markov did. He did once tonight and had a great shot on the net but he must do it more. It will come with time, experience and confidence.

I'm confident he can hold the line better than Matheson and ultimately keep more plays alive.
I'm also getting a sneaking suspicion that his recovery time game to game is as good as it is in game.
If this is the case it's huge for us. This was another decent game for the Kid despite being partly at fault for the GA.
I Still blame Struble and Dach more because if they make the proper play Lane isn't stuck behind the net trying to turn the puck from danger.

Awesome numbers for any blueliner. For a rookie? This is absurd.

Definitely a surprise. He is stronger than expected, and he's doing a good job of not being greedy or jumping the gun to try to create offence. He's showing that he won't have to be sheltered or insulated defensively. When his biggest tool is his IQ, you know he is going to be capable in all zones

Personally i blame Dach the most for that goal. He's gonna be 24 soon he has to be better than that. And that play has nothing to do with him not playing for a year it's mental. Even if Hutson is well positioned to prevent the goal it's still a bad play by Dach that would have extended the time spent in the defensive zone which even if Hutson plays well could have led to a goal later. You have to clear on a play like that. I think we did not appreciate enough back in the days how good Subban, Markov and Price were at getting the puck quickly out of our zone with a success rate that was very high.

I think many people (not even haters) didn’t think he’d be this good in his prime lol.

The fact that he’s got Conn Smythe heart of a lion to go with all the skill and brains is really what puts him over the top.

I watched him in College and I thought his shot was better.
His shot from distance has never been great but he scored a lot of his goals in college from being in the right place at the right time in close. He has elite hockey sense so he will definitely get goals off rebounds and 2on1s. Show him some tape of how Markov used to sneak in the backdoor on the PP.

I think he'll be a point per game defender in a couple years

He’s got a good shot at the Calder. Fierce competition but he’s been awesome

Been said by another poster, surely, but, if the PP gets upgraded with the arrival of Laine -- and Hutson keeps playing on the 1st PP wave -- his already excellent offensive contribution should get an uptick and make him that much better a pick for the Calder.
