alot of things need to go right for Hutson to be a top 5 pick just on defence i still take Jiricek,Nemec and Mintyukov before Lane then we still have Cooley,Slafkovsky,Wright,Gauthier even Kulich had a great year in the AHL

If everything goes right for Hutson yes he could become a great offensive dman but he will still need to be sheltered because of his size Reinbacher could be that guy if Lane reaches hes ceilling but yes lets relax with the top 5 in a redraft atleast for now
I agree 100% but it is absolutely not far fetched to say he can be a top 5 value pick. With where he was picked and what he will mean to this team it could be the best actual value pick in years.
Value at 62 compared to the value he will bring. The difference between the guys you named, Hutson is well on his well to being ahead in that regard

Sheltered is alright for a talent. Most players are a trade off of some sorts. High end offense that can run a PP is well worth hiding on the third pairing. He would be well rested for PP and if you need a game tying goal.
Hutson would make far less money, in the end, IMO, as a PP specialist who gets hidden on a 3rd pairing, with O-zone starts as a top-4 D at even strength with a better pairing partner when we are down a goal, but I'm fine with that if he is.

It adds fire power and controls the Cap impact all at the same time. Just more Cap to have more talented depth.

If there was a redraft today, Slaf, Nemec, Cooley, Wright, Gauthier, and Jiricek would definitely still be drafted before Hutson.

After those 6, Hutson has a chance of being picked.
Still convinced Wright would be part of the group?

Watch him play instead of following outdated draft-year scouting reports

he still looks unnatural skating backwards. He has a lot of work to go, I wish I could say he reminds me of subban, but subban was more brain dead in his own end in jr. hockey. Partnered with the right guy and he’s a Norris calibre d man. Hutson will need that too, I think he’ll be an nhl player, but his backward skating when playing a guy is still below average. He’s treading water on the defensive end of skating, but he was so bad when he was drafted it was comical. It’s not comical but it’s clearly his weakest area.

i havent been this excited about a pick outside round 1 since subban. I hope he’s in ahl for a year like subban was for us.

Yep it’s still awkward but better. He’s an amazing prospect. There’s no doubt but he’s not a sure fire one. Plenty of valid criticisms but there often a bit overblown. Anyone hand waving his offensive skill set are ridiculous though

he cant skate backwards how is it not an issue specially for a defender
K'Andre Miller struggled with this while playing for the NTDP, too (he was a converted forward). He appears to have improved in this area. Hopefully Hutson will do the same.

If Anton Wahlberg had a better IQ and vision he would have been a top 5 pick.
If grandma had wheels instead of feet, she'd be a bicycle.

In the modern NHL staking backwards doesn't work all the time. The younger generations of players are being taught how to come in from angles from the front and lateral sides and are trying to minimize always skating backwards. Some of the forwards are just too fast.

He can drop back to the red or opposite blue line on his off side (puck on other side of zone with opponent controlling the puck) and then skate forward in, angling the player the direction he wants to take them. The left and ring wing lock systems in hockey have been used for decades and have the forwards and D all doing this in unison.

Hutson is very good laterally and his edge work is top tier. He is the exact modern day type of player who can find success with practice and development. With his size he will never be a physical force. That is why we drafted and signed several other D that are. He is sneaky good at striping pucks away from players for his size and he generates enough offense to make the minor defensive issues a non-issue.

He did this from the age 13, all the way up and through the USNTDP, then in NCAA verse older players, and has done the same in several national tournaments for the USA, including the one with full grown NHL/EU players (WC). If he was going to fall flat on his face I think it would have already happened by now.

He is smart and a fast learner. His USA teammates in the NHL as well as his USA/NHL level coach have said the same. The thing they spoke of the most was his ability to create and pull off moves that leave NHL players gasping. This is a great sign. These people play and coach all the best players in the world.

If you watch him play you would know that he still can not complete back crossovers at even a bantam level. He has shown absolutely no ability to do it in the most recent tournament, which doesn't mean that he has not improved in practice but obviously isn't confident in using it in game situations yet.

he had a great D+1 everyone saw that but lets not act like size and skating isnt an issue theres still about 10 players i would easily take over Hutson

Love hes ceilling its huge but theres also alot of risks and bust factors hes not a top 5 pick a year after getting drafted #62

Ok maybe not top 5. But top 10-15 right now for sure... no other prospect in 2022 draft did a D+1 like him.

Top 15 yes i think so like i said the potentiel is huge i think hes the favorite for the hobey this year

In my mind he should have winning this year. He have the most productive season at NCAA since Brian Leetch. I don't said he is going to be a player like Leetch, but we can all hope a Quinn Hughes impact. His talent is just too oustanding to don't put fantastic numbers at NHL level!
