This kid is going to be the best thing that'll happen to the Habs power play since Markov was let go, and they f***ing need it.

Years of atrocious power play with this group, years of spamming Weber one timer and forcing it to him, years of doing the same with PK. I can't remember the last time the Habs powerplay had any creativity or vision what so ever. I miss the Markov-Kovalev Powerplay days.
Every time I think of Markov leaving I cringe. Didn’t realize how pivotal he was until he was gone, and I’ll be damned if I make that mistake again

I know they won’t ever do it because blah blah veteran, but this kid needs to start on PP1. Matheson is too static and predictable. The PP barely has any movement and is too easy to defend. No one is taking defenders out of position to open up lanes.

MSL will have to make the switch at some point from Matheson to Hutson. Only question is how long will it take.

The thing is, even though Matheson had 60 points last year, the power play sucked. Can't stick with something that's bringing the team down and preventing winning when there's an option like Hutson right there.

Pp already sucks this preseason, reporters already getting on MSL about it, and he's already annoyed with the questions. That bodes well for a quicker switch.

That’s not gonna happen IMO….only way Hutson starts a PP is if Mats is just finishing a shift….Matheson is a vet that’s seen success at amassing points, they not gonna decrease the value of a vet they probably planning on trading at TDL 2026……..plus he can do the job.

Hutson will soon be the man…..but not yet

Who knows maybe he does put him there , I wouldn't bet on it though , much to the chagrin of the fans here. Nothing MSL has shown so far tells me he's gonna take matheson off pp1 or bench anderson/gallager/dvo if they struggle

Anyone know how long it took for Quinn Hughes or Adam Fox to run their respective PP1?

They're not going to keep Matheson as pp1 qb just to increase his trade value in 2026. Hutson will overtake Matheson as pp qb some time this year. I predict November or December, but I wouldn't be shocked if it's sooner or later.

At some point it might simply become too egregious not to do

Hutson played well except he still has the same problems. They were on display twice last night.

1) Opposing players can beat him on the outside. Juulsen had the same problem. Even though Lane had three -four steps on a Flyer in the first period, the opponent went around him and had a free lane on the goalie. It started with a pass up the boards from Anderson in the offensive zone
2) His straightaway speed leaves a lot to be desired.

Management might just decide to send him down to the A to work on those drawbacks.
There were two reasons why the hugely talented Hutson fell to the bottom of the second round in his draft year: lack of size and limited straightforward speed. All the playing time in Laval will have no ameliorating effect on the former and limited effect on the latter. Hutson’s game is akin to riding a motorcycle: exciting until the moment of contact. Once Hutson turns over the puck, both he and the team are in trouble as Hutson lacks the recovery speed to eliminate the counter attack. We all saw Hutson's limitation against the Flyers' B squad. He was beaten wide on a couple of occasions. Imagine what would happen when Hutson plays against against elite NHL competition.

The question is whether Hughes and MSL are prepared to take the good along with the bad that Hutson offers. I think they will. Hutson's offensive skills are so superior and potentially game changing that the risks that Hutson's limitations pose will have to be accepted. A restive fan base will accept nothing less, particularly if the power play struggles. I think it also comes down to a timing or staging issue in Hughes' plans to re-build the team. While the team is showing positive signs that the building blocks for constructing a legitimate contender are being assembled, the team is still not there yet. Hughes understands this and realizes that until he can shed those overpaid and under performing veterans from the roster and the wave of talented prospects (Demidov, Hage, Kapanen, Beck, Florian, Tuch, etc.) arrive, play and contribute as hoped for, this team will remain more a pretender than contender.

As I said before, hockey, like all professional sports, at its essence, is entertainment. And the skillful Hutson is a great showman. He has elite skill which will put fans in the seats and merchandise on their backs. Hutson is part of the wave of talented players that will bring excitement, interest and high offensive skill to a rebuilding team. If Hughes and MSL took a chance on Laine, they'll take a chance on Hutson. What do they and the team have to lose?

This is going to be an interesting year.

Exciting hockey is back on the menu.

Yes two big question Mark's for me heading into the season, aside from the obvious how can we best stay healthy, are:

1) how to best use Hutson?
2) how can we get Laine going? If it's woth Dach, who is the best 3rd wheel.

The bottom six should sort itself out. But it will also be interesting to see which 3rd and 4th lines work best. So far I'm liking Roy with Anderson. Though it's early. I didn't expect to like it though. Didn't want Roy saddled with Anderson.

These are my concerns as well, especially seeing as this is training camp and not games down the stretch with players fighting it out for a playoff spot.
