Player Discussion Lane Hutson Part 2

I am interested to see how he handles heavier, more aggressive teams and how the league adapts to Lane's tendencies. So far so good and that is exciting but his progression is going to be met with stiff opposition from opponents who have had a chance to watch him on video and feel him out in-game.

I'm interested in seeing this too. I have a memory from the 2020 playoffs of Hughes sitting on the bench looking almost in tears because one of the teams (St. Louis or Vegas maybe?) were forechecking him so hard. I am sure it was a tough adjustment for him. I'm excited to see how he handles this playoffs.

I’m just happy that with Hutson, and other prospects we have, they have that raw offensive talent.

NEVER AGAIN do I want to be subjected to an org that signs, drafts and develops PLUGS who are good at defense but can’t keep their head up and take muffin shots at the goalies chest.

100/100 times let us please draft the amazing offensive talent and try to reach them defense. Not the other way around.

Vancouver fan here, watched pretty much every Quinn Hughes NHL game. Watched both games Hutson played in and Habs fans aren't wrong who compare him to Hughes. To come into your first two games and have the confidence, skill, and intelligence to do some of the things he was doing--sure it's early but he does look a whole lot like the guy who may win the Norris this year.

That last game looked like a lot of fun with the atmosphere even with the meaningless loss at the end. I hadn't intended to watch it but it was the most entertaining game of the night--perhaps with the exception of the Leafs giving up 200 shots in the second period when they folded in Florida. So much great young talent in Montreal--the future looks very bright.

They forget that Hughes himself had to grow his own game and become the player that he is today. I agree, you don't see it often. Hutson still has to put in the work if he wants to reach that level but he has the potential.

He played really well both games but lets temper these observations with the knowledge that Detroit is a smaller team with one of the weakest forechecking/physical games in the entire league.

I hope he learns how to low bridge people like marchand as a defense mechanism. The league doesn't seem to mind.

Hutson is a unique talent who has proven his many critics wrong for most of his young career.

In his short ‘audition’ he has shown that he has the ‘chops’ to be a core, if not a defining, player for the Canadiens for the next decade.

As long as you don't vow to eat an article of your own clothing if he surpasses your expectations, you'll be okay. That has a habit of backfiring on people around here.

So far, it's been good. Hutson did show his offensive skill in the 2 games. Lots of fans watched that part but the part I was obsessive with was his D coverage.

Agreed. I think it's a bad idea to rush an undersized D man. Even if he shows offensive promise. Asking him to mature his D game against pros in the AHL, is not unreasonable.

The offense is there. The focus we need him to work on is defense against Pros/men. Last thing we needs is an offensively gifted spoiled kid and asking for him to go to the AHL later on after he thought he earned an NHL spot.

I'm sure he already knows what the Habs want him to work on. They likely looked at the 2 games and showed him things about D in our own zone. Let him work on it this summer and add a bit of muscle. Shows up to camp and ready to produce both offensively and defensively.

Development focus on the different parts of the game is huge. This is where Hughes/MSL are strong.

He absolutely should. He, along with the majority of top prospects, start in the A and work their way up after some much needed seasoning. It's just part of the process and very welcomed by this Habs fan.

If he has a productive offseason getting stronger, then
I then I could see 20 or 30 games in Laval. Then a decision
may be made. But I still lean toward a full season in the AHL.
That would give him 2 offseasons to get stronger.and I"m
sure there are things he can learn at that leval.

Lane's play in camp+preseason will dictate whether he makes the habs or starts in Laval. If he plays similar to how did in his first 2 nhl games, he's definitely making the team. He looks like he could already be one of the most impactful players on the team.
