Let's take our time with him. No rush. We got many defensemen. Just don't give him to Houle.

Houle is doing a great job, you don't have a credible reason to hold this opinion.

No matter the burn year or not, I think Hutson will see some NHL playing time (and at the very least, training time) if he sign late in the season, if only because the brass will want to evaluate him starting from the big league. I agree that the AHL isn't the best for him giving his playstyle and limitations, so if by some "miracle" (it wouldn't be - just because of the game in each league is played some prospects are just more comfortable in the NHL) he proves to be ready for the big club, then we can skip this issue altogether.

He will likely negotiate a stint in Montreal like Farrell did last season

A lot of people on these boards would fare just as good as the « real » scouts. Hockey isn’t rocket science, most people who are gonna invest time in watching will be able to spot the good and the bad players. Some they like will bust, some they don’t will boom. Just like every « pro » scouts.

So, I’ll rephrase: Scouts are just invested fans who know people.

All you are displaying is how little you know about professional scouting

I would have to say that was a rough game for Hutson today, in my less than qualified opinion.

He often seemed to be trying to force plays that weren’t there, and was caught frequently up the ice, which led to an awful lot of odd man rush chances against the Yanks. Also seemed to be frequently outmuscled or outmatched physically, which has always been the major (and only real knock) on his overall game.

I did like some of his creativity offensively, and you can see he is adept at quarterbacking a powerplay, which we haven’t had since Markov, so that’s nice. He made some nice setup passes that were simply not converted. You can see he has a tremendous hockey IQ, with terrific vision and the tools to make elite offensive plays; overall a less than stellar game by his own standards, but onward and upward.

Not sure if it necessarily worries me, but it’s quite strange that he’s likely played defence his whole life yet doesn’t seem capable of skating backwards all too well. Or at least he avoids it as much as possible. Faster NHL wingers are going to go wide to force him to make the move to turn around which will buy them that extra half second to blow past him. He’ll need to improve his anticipation for the big leagues.

Can you elaborate the assertion about the AHL? By all accounts the NHL is superior in quality (difficulty) in every way. What do you mean ?

The AHL playstyle is different from the NHL. More forecheck, more physicality, more tryhards. It's not just a lower league, it's a different league. Some players genuinely find it easier to play in the NHL because there's more skilled players and the game is more structured. Hutson appears to me like a player who will benefit from playing with other very skilled players, and who may actually thrives in the NHL compared to the AHL.

With 2 majors injury. He won't be able to play a physical game in the future. Hope, he come back at 100% and don't become an injury prone player.
Don’t think he’s injury”prone”

He’s not Prone to injury due to recklessness or poor physical condition….freak accidents attributes to his down time.

wrist is perfectly fine now and as for that knee, I expect that knee to be stronger then ever and he shouldn’t miss a beat once he comes back.

Zellweger another small offensive dmen is doing great in the ahl this year. He's not as skinny as Hutson tough.

This is true about the league... but the AHL is a great league to work on positional play because it's the most similar to the NHL. So they might want him down there to work on that. Like what they are doing with Xhekej. He will get to play in both leagues next year. There is also a huge logjam in the NHL so that may need to be figured out.

Watched both his games so far (pre-tournament vs Canada, 1st game vs Finland).

Vs Canada: The level and Tempo of the game was that of a real Tournament game. In short, I thought he looked great. Great vision and IQ. He always seemed to be creating something and the team wants to get the puck to him so that he creates plays. Good performance with the OT winner. Grade: A

Vs Norway. Idk if it’s just me, but the ice looked bad. Early in the game it seemed to me that lots of players were falling, puck was bouncy and a few fanned shots. Felt like both teams adjusted to that, and Norway took full advantage of this handicap to raw talent.
People say Hutson didn’t have a good game but you can say that about most of the team.
Yes a few bad plays but overall he had an ok game. He was by far the most used player and his team came out with a W. Yes a few things to correct and not a “spectacular” performance by his high standards but overall he was good and I’m confident when they play better teams like Sweden, his game will rise. He’s that type of player. Grade: B.

He’s also a better skater than Hutson.
I think it's too early to bring Hutson up at the end of this year. Hopefully I'm wrong because Hutson will be in a Montreal uniform to close out the season, like Poehling, Farrell, Caufield, Harris, etc... before him.

Habs won’t have a choice, it’ll likely be part of the agreement to have him leave college to sign ELC - burn 1st year by playing NHL game

I'd rather him go back to college and keep bulking up next year.

I could see the ELC burn plan happening and management living with the fact that he's not quite ready for full time NHL duty, knowing he'll get precious experience and then a full summer of training with the habs. I would love to be wrong, but I think he won't hit the ground running when he finally makes the jump.

My expectations for hutson are moderate. I just want him to the QB to give our PP life. If he's average outside of the PP I don't even care. He is 100% an offensive role player. I kind of see it similar to Caufield, who was/is/should be the big goal scorer that we've needed for so long, if LH ends up being a high quality PP specialist, I'm overjoyed

Easily less forecheck in the AHL as the players are slower and don't get on top of the dmen as quickly. The NHL has bigger/stronger/faster/smarter athletes that are more physically imposing than the slugs in the AHL. I would agree that there are more players in the AHL who are trying to demonstrate their physicality but all of the best ones at effectively doing that are in the NHL.

after watching todays game and seeing clips here and there if Hutson I am inclined to agree that his skating is sub-par. Maybe even atrociously deficient.

There is not questions his IQ can make plays happen. If he doesn’t put on 30-40 pounds and learn to skate backwards.. he’s never having a that wonderful uplifting careers some here are so optimistic about.
