He is way too small to get hit. Many have tried to hit him and its like he just disappears from their vision and from their reach right before the tackle.
Most people get easier to see and hit the closer you get to them. Hutson is the opposite: the closer you get the less you see of him. It could be the effect of the head fakes, or the body fakes, or stick fakes, or even his newest puck fakes.
He hasnt started his eye fakes yet on the NHL level, but when he does he will become basically impossible to hit or catch or follow or see.
Interesting post considering recent developments, though not involving Hutson. Recently teams have started teeing off on Hughes. I would have anticipated that this is more likely with Hutson since he’s a rookie. If it can happen to Hughes, it can happen to Hutson. It’s probably inevitable. If it happens to Hutson this year, how does he react to it?
It was pretty noticeable this past Monday that the Canucks were taking runs at hutson and caufield. I particularly recall hutson taking a late hit that even made me flinch.
It turns out he responded with a 3 point effort with his fingerprints all over the game, but I am concerned with the wear and tear over the long haul. Mind you, I was also concerned about him adapting from a soft ncaa schedule to the chaotic nhl schedule, but he's been passing with flying colours to date.
Of course, no way to predict the future and how injuries would factor in the long run, but so far so good.
Do you think players aren't trying to smash him into the boards every game?Just for clarity, I’m not predicting he’ll go into the fetal position nice he starts getting banged around. I’m just saying wait and see until this happens. It seems inevitable that it will. He could be unphased by it or it could go the other way. Time will tell.
Honnestly, for the Habs, small guys like Caufield and Hutson looked more aware than the big ones like Slafkovsky and Dach when it's time to protect themself.Just for clarity, I’m not predicting he’ll go into the fetal position nice he starts getting banged around. My goodness, you are tempting fate. One blown coverage could open the flood gates now!Man not a single hater in here for pages and pages. That's so boring, get in here and own your takes boys. I need the entertainment it's a blizzard here.
This is crazy, because of course Bourque, Leetch and Murphy did so when scoring levels were quite a bit higher. This was Hutson's 18th evenstrenght point in his 41st game. He's pacing to tie Bourque and Leetch at 3rd all-time rookie D at ES (36). Seeing how he has 11 in his last 21, which is ~150% of his production in his first 20 games (7/20), he might reach Larry Murphy at #1 (40).
I responded to at least two posters who said he was a lock.
Quinn Hughes has rolled with the punches...........I think these kids are so good on their skates, and are so in game intelligent, and have had to be since they started playing when they were 5 years old. It's definitely tougher for guys under 6ft and 200lbs that's for sure.Just for clarity, I’m not predicting he’ll go into the fetal position once he starts getting banged around. Some great info........good post.Unless they end very high on a few all-time lists, which will be talked about, and it won't be the case for Celebrini unless he starts getting more points.
Hutson, among rookie Ds, might end-up 2nd all-time for assist by a rookie D if we're pacing him for the season so far (28 in 41). Thing is, he has 17 assists in his last 20 games and if he keeps that pace, he'll beat Murphy at #1 (63 vs 60). If that happens, it will definitely be talked about in PHWA circles.
As I mentioned in a post above this one, he's pacing to tie Leetch and Bourque at 3rd all-time rookie D ES points, with 18 in 41, but in the last 20 games he's had 11 and if he keeps that pace, he'll beat Murphy at #1 (41 vs 40).
Finally, he's pacing for 62 points, which would put him at 7th all-time rookie D, but he's been PPG for the last 20 games since being promoted to the first PP and getting more time with the top line. If he keeps that pace, he'll be 2nd all-time, 3 points behind Larry Murphy.
Hutson gets hit hard pretty often. He just absorbs it. As an undersized D his entire life, he knows what to do. The dude was going through a growth spurt after he was drafted lol. He's used to being super small out there in comparison to others, even in juniors, and even compared to other small d-men.Quinn Hughes has rolled with the punches...........I think these kids are so good on their skates, and are so in game intelligent, and have had to be since they started playing when they were 5 years old. He didn't.I don't recall if Murphy won the Calder, but I'm pretty sure leech and bourque did... so there's that.
But I don't just want to focus on points either. He seems like a natural leader as well. The guy who is working his tail off and leading a bag skate.... you see his competitive nature along the boards too. He has his stumbles from time to time but his defensive play does generally get overshadowed.
headfake and move on with life. As small as Hughes is I don't think he's missed as much time with injuries as Cale Makar has?Interesting post considering recent developments, though not involving Hutson.
