Perhaps the defensve play of these 2 players has an impact on that. Lane made a pretty atrocious play cheating down low in the ozone (without the puck) letting Jack spring free for a breakaway goal.

the habs are way more than a defensively sound lane hutson away from being a good team.

i just dont see a head to head comparison being very accurate given the disparity in talent between the two teams.

It's not perfect, but the gap is truly massive and you can't blame that on everyone else.

2xGA is excellent, 3.5 is atrocious.

I don't think there's a situation in the league you put hutson in where he's giving up that few chances.

I wouldn't say NJD plays that minnesota style of very low event hockey either

Hutson had an ugly play on 2 goals against, getting bullied off the puck by haula down low on the siegs goal and the bad positional awareness on the hughes goal.

It's well documented that rookies tend to fall off halfway through the season because they aren't used to the grind. With how MSL is handling Hutson with all these minutes I wonder if he's going to be dead on his feet by December.

You mean the play where he was in a perfect spot in the ozone right in front of the goalie with no one around and the other habs player decided to shoot and missed the net instead of passing him the puck that would have created a golden chance?

It’s called coping. If he’d actually watched NJ he’d have said he felt better about Hutson’s defense after watching Hamilton play last night. Luke was fine in the scheme of things.

Luke didn't stick out to me as terrible and the numbers don't support him being terrible. I'm not suggesting Hutson was terrible. I didn't watch him closely and don't hold him to any particular defensive standard other than knowing he has to improve over time which is also true of Luke Hughes. Comparing the two is apples and oranges in my view, which is my point. Comparing them and saying that absolves Hutson of any wrongdoing is a poor argument as I see it. The poster before and you are saying Luke Hughes was terrible. If so, I don't see how that should make Hutson's defense as some standard to be acceptable. In any event, they are both young offensive defenders. I don't expect defensive perfection. Both will make mistakes. Luke is coming off a pretty significant injury and still working his way into a new system. Maybe after midseason you can circle back on their defensive games to see how they are coming along.

Hutson is fun as heck to watch with puck on stick, especially in the O zone. To improve his defensive game he will need to use the pass to move to puck more than his feet. When he develops that part of his game he can stay better positioned as a D man on the defensive side of the puck. Imo that defensive philosophy can be taught and developed. The elite skills he has can’t. He’s going to be a great player.

No I mean the play where he got way too low and then was too slow to make up for it leading to a breakaway and goal for the other team.

That forward also has an open chance. If you can't skate well enough to make up for it you can't be getting out of position like that.

Can't play like Quinn or Makar if you can't skate like quinn or makar

For me, I think Hutson is going to be more on the level of Torey Krug in his prime (which is a great player! A #1 defenseman even. This isn't an insult by any means) not a superstar.

I didn't start the comparison.

Luke has given up basically nothing while on the ice.

Hutson has allowed boatloads.

The team excuse is overplayed.

So exactly that play which he's on the same spot as Siegenthaler when he scored. The difference his Hutson never received the puck

I opened a can of worm this morning. All hell break loose. I even got the excel spreadsheet master out of his hole.

No matter what the spreadsheet stat shows, Luke was awful last night. The game itself was pretty bad. The Devils got carried by the Hughes-Bratt-Palat line last night and only the Dvorak-Anderson-Gallagher line came to play for Montreal.

It was yet another dud of a game (at least from Montreal side). The lack of effort from Dach and especially Matheson is starting to be really, really concerning.

Jacky was electric last night. So was Bratt. Hamilton is a real concern, he was awful. So was Luke. I like Siegenthaler pace. Dillon was a pain in the ass around the boards. I’m sure it must be annoying to playing against this dude.

Hutson was ok. He opened a shooting lane for a one timer for Savard a couple of times. It’s not the first time he’s doing that this year. Prime Weber with Hutson would have been deadly. Anderson was pretty good last night, he used his speed and his forechecking is as good as its ever been. Just like Dillon, he must have been a pain to deal with.

After watching Luke Hughes yesterday I feel much better about Hutson defensive game.

What is defensive game? Care to explain this oversimplification?

No matter what the spreadsheet stat shows, Luke was awful last night. The game itself was pretty bad.

There were several instances where, when pressed in his own zone, he gave the puck away. I don't think he must have won more than 30% of his 50/50 puck battles. He was caught flat-footed a couple of times in the defensive zone, missing out on his defensive assignments. His D positioning in front of the net was absolutely horrendous (always on the outside and getting beat physically). On Newhook's second goal, he did an absolutely horrible line change. The few times he had the puck on his stick in the offensive zone I thought he was forcing plays and making bad decisions (and killed the cycling at least once that way).\

But I got to tell ya, he did one good pass and go on the PP with his brother at some point.
