Landeskog Practicing w/Team

Wow Gabe looks great here. The way he just hoped backward so easily in stride, then skated backward, then transitioned forward again so easily and started skating hard again. Not so easy on the knee.

Maybe I can take my tinfoil hat off now while suggesting the delay was about cap space.

Then put it on again when pointing out Manson's mysterious new injury gives them another LTIR option for Gabe to maybe get some games in before the playoffs if he's ready.

I think the delay is both about cap space and not needing to rush him back. They waited 3 years, they can wait another month before Landy plays his 1st game. I’m sure they’ve thought about giving him couple of games before the playoffs to shake off the rust, but in the end improving the roster by using the cap space was more of a priority.

It’s a completely unknown injury Landy is coming back from. They don’t know how it will go. Landy could come back, play one game, or even a one period and have a set back where he’s unable to play again, while they rushed him back just to give him couple of games before the playoffs and not improving the team. In which case the Avs would be screwed

Just a realist. I want Landy back for the first round. I dont see it happening. Training Camp I would bet the house on it.

Would be a lot of hype not to return for the playoffs.

Gabe's sit down interview with Keefe. His interview with Spittin Chiclets. His much hyped 5 part doc timed just for the playoffs. Finally practicing with the team and looking great.

Maybe the universe is trying to tell you something? Like HF crashing just to force your avatar to be smaller. :sarcasm:

It's happening!!

With Gabe back our group would be so stacked it's truly a wonder to witness after the hell we went through early this season.

We have the perfect mix of experience and leadership. That locker room will be a mentally strong collective of warriors lead by the Viking warlord himself!

Anyone watched episode 2?

Gabe was doing really good in December of 2023. He was back on the ice, and feeling good. Did an off ice workout, and partially tore his patella tendon in the same knee. While the cartilage graft was fine, the tendon tear set him back to where he had to essentially start rehab over. He had to be off his leg again for an extended period to let the tendon heal, and he said he lost a lot of his muscle mass in his quad/leg again.

There was appearances by EJ and Nate talking on camera, and, oddly enough, Steven Stamkos talked quite a bit about Gabe.
I missed episode one and am so damn pissed. Got episode 2 recorded but haven't watched yet. Episode 3 is set to be recorded.

Just pissed that I missed the first episode for good it appears.

Yeah it's weird that they're not available online anywhere yet. I saw somewhere that it will be on max a week after it airs but I don't see any on there yet. I'd imagine it would show up as kittens once it hits max though. I was also going to recommend seeing if you could do a max free trial to watch the first episode but since I'm not seeing it on there that's no help.

Yeah that's basically what I think. They didn't have the cap space for him so they didn't rush him, they just waited to see if someone else went on LTIR, while he continued to skate most days on his own.

Maybe he could have pushed to come back, and test it out, but there was no need to.

Don't rush him back, don't rub the leagues face in it, and just wait to see how he does, and what their options are toward the end of the season with the cap if he looks ready to get some games in before the playoffs. If nothing changes just wait.

I feel like around the time Gabe and the team signed off on releasing the doc and doing his interviews, they had a good idea he could be ready for the playoffs.

Otherwise they'd just wait until next year to release the doc, or wait to see if he actually came back before cutting the ending. Hopefully that means they think he can come back in the first round.

Placing Manson and Wood on LTIR and activating Landeskog leaves the 23 man roster below, which is $899k under the cap ceiling.

Clearly there's flexibility here to get Landeskog in the lineup before the playoffs while giving Manson and Wood all the time they need to heal up before the playoffs.

Not really a fan of Manson not getting back in until the playoffs. It always seems like he starts slow when coming back from an injury. But.... we are talking about Gabriel Ingemar John Landeskog... if he wants in we get him in.

If Manson is ready to come back, I wouldn't mind seeing Cale Makar become day to day to round out the end of the season. Dude's going to need some rest for the grueling marathon Bednar has in store for him.

With Landeskog activated next season the Avs would have 18 guys signed and $8.7m in capspace.

They need to fill 3 forward spots and 2 D's for a 23 man roster, and have the guys listed below to re-sign.

Nelson $7m
Drouin $4m
Kiviranta $1.5m
Vesey $800k

Lindgren $3m
Malinski (RFA) $1.5m
EJ $800k

Choices will have to be made but to me it looks like a pretty decent position to be in.

With how deep the lineup is we're going to see quite a lot of rotation going on down the stretch to give guys extra time off to rest and heal niggling injuries ahead of the playoffs.

Yup, and next season is where the Rantanen trade essentially matters. Had the Avs re-signed him, they’d have closer to 3M in cap space for 4-5 guys. They would’ve been forced to move out salaries like Manson and Colton just to put together a cap compliant team.
If Landeskog returns, they’d still have to move out salary, but clearly not as much.

Nelson is the key though. No matter what, they’d still need him under contract. They have to have their Cs locked up for next season because I simply don’t see the trade capital to acquire another.
Sign Nelson, trade Colton and Manson for assets, re-sign Lindgren to a cheaper deal than Manson if possible and find some UFA wingers to fill out the depth.

With Mikko off the roster, I'm much less worried about the cap, even if Landy is back.
It merely kicks the can down the road, which TBH, is what was most needed. Necas could easily get something starting with a 10, if he and his agent are smart. But, maybe he will take a discount who knows.

It’s pretty clear now that you can stick just about anyone that can skate and shoot with MacKinnon and they will thrive. I prefer that be Necas but if he doesn’t wanna cooperate you deal him this summer imo.

While I don't disagree there was that one random instance, I don't remember who we were playing but he returned from injury and then proceeded to have like 13 hits in the game. Including one pretty big one. He was just flying around hitting everything. Then if I recall correctly sucked for many, many games after that.

So are the above numbers listed your estimate to re-sign? $3M seems very low for Lindgren.

I think it's pretty clear what to do as cap space becomes limited. You move out guys as needed in the following order:
- Wood
- Colton
- Girard
- Manson

With Mikko off the roster, I'm much less worried about the cap, even if Landy is back.
Imo, there’s no way they should move Girard before Manson. Sure, he’s undersized but at least he plays.

I love what Manson has brought as much as anyone, but his play has slid tremendously this year, maybe due to injury, but I don’t foresee that changing for the better.
