LaLonde Fired. McLellan Hired in DET

how did Lyon look? is he poised to take over the net this year like he did last under Coach Todd?
or will Todd give Talbot a looooonnnnnggggg leash given this is the 3rd time Cam will play for an NHL team coached by Todd?

I think this is a good hire. Not only is Todd McLellan a good coach but he has also had success in both Edmonton and LA with teams in more of a rebuild/retool stage trying to become more competitive. He is probably a good choice for Detroit in their current situation.

Pretty wild that the press in Detroit are saying that Todds first practice with the team was an hour long and its the longest practice of the season.

With some of the efforts the wings have shown this season, Lalonde didnt have them out there getting bag skated even once? No wonder the vets are saying they like that Todd actually holds people accountable

This team is supposed to be in their latter stage of their rebuild, and yet they carry 3 Habs rejects (Petry, Chiarot, Gustafsson) and one Leafs reject (Holl) in their top 6 D. No new coach can salvage that.

Last I checked Petry rejected the Habs, not the other way around.

... But yeah he f***ing sucks, too.

Lalonde should likely never be an NHL coach again. He isn't cut out for the job.
He most definitively will be NHL coach again, a lot more people said the same about Scott Arniel.
This season and the end of last season it the only periods where it hasn't gone above expectations for Lalonde.

3 wins in a row for Wings now. Team isn't perfect but is looking night and day compared to Lalonde's lifeless team.

I still think its a good hire. TM will have better success turning the Wings around and getting them into the playoffs (not likely this year because Yzerman took too long to can Lalonde).

TM isn’t great with young players or having playoff success. I think the key will be not holding onto him for too long.

Who knows if Ottawa and Lightning keep deciding to lose their games...

One thing about Todd I’ll say is he can help get a struggling franchise to the next level - which is playoffs - but he gets outcoached when he gets there. However at this point I think Wings fans would be happy just making the playoffs.

If the Wings do manage to turn things around it’s unfortunate timing. With the resurgence of the Lions, the Wings in the playoffs will be far from front page news in Detroit.

I mean the Lions season will be long over by then

Honestly it would have been a great year for Detroit to get a top 4 pick and an elite forward but good on them for salvaging their season. They've been very good lately.

There’s no guarantee they’d get a top 5 pick. We’ve had bad lottery luck before, though we did get Seider and Raymond for what it’s worth.

McLellan rubbing the right spot. Gotta eat some crow, they look good.

Yeah I was gonna say, lol. The Detroit bad lottery luck is a bit of a lie considering they arguably got the number 2 guy in 2020 and the 2nd overall in a redraft behind Jack Hughes in 2019.

That's how I feel. Yzerman plucked top 2 talent with his 4th and 6th overall pick. And Edvinsson isn't looking like he's a slouch either. Three really good drafts that's forming this team into something exciting to watch.

Still no number one like most of these well off franchises were gifted. May / may not make a difference right now, but it’s staggering to see the NHL continually screwing the Wings. It’s all rooted from Mike Illitch and his free spending days and good ole Gary boy didn’t like it.

Because Yzerman is great at drafting. We needed the lottery luck in 2017 or 2018. Also obviously would have been awesome in 2022, 2023 or 2024.

And who the hell knows that Detroit looks like right now if they had drafted Jack Hughes and Tim Stützle instead of Seider and Raymond. Better? Worse? The same? I don't think most Wings fans are crying over the 2019 and 2020 lotteries anymore, but fact remains there's no lottery wins to speed things along.

I'm not sure how the new lottery system works, but it would be HILARIOUS if Wings somehow [albeit hockeygods separating earth and water] and scored #1 overall and draft James Hagens. Rebuild=Over! (assuming current prospect pool works out)

Wishful fictional thinking. But a superstar top line center and bumping Larkin down to the 2nd line would suddenly put this team in contender territory.

How does the fact that we were able to pick good players make it a lie that we have had bad lottery luck? It's objectively true that we haven't had any positive movement in the lottery.

Because they still were able to draft well and proves that dropping down isn't that much of a big deal if you actually can scout/pick players. Who's to also say that Detroit doesn't take those same guys in the same spots they fell from?
