My impressions from his years with the Kings.

Good:
* Can teach structure
* Can establish a good team system
* Good communicator (at least to the media)

Bad:
* Has "his guys" (likely veterans) and will ride them to the ground
* Doesn't put young guys in positions to succeed, unless they are really special

Ugly:
* His in game adjustments are just terrible
* Gets outcoached in the playoffs due to his inability to adapt

Hot garbage in SJS, Edmonton, LA. Ya, he’ll turn that shite show Yzerman created, around.

SMH.

It should have been Yzerman that was shown the door.

Stop the cap. What is this bullshit? With all due respect. The kings had no system or structure under Todd for how many years ???

Good structure?? 1-3-1 when down goals in the playoffs in the third period.

Good communicator??? Where on earth were you when they asked him what’s going wrong with the team he said I don’t know straight up more than a few times?

I have no idea where you got this idea when almost every kings fan can tell you the Kings played with no system and philosophy for eons under him until they went balls to the wall 1-3-1 for a single season or so.

I have never seen a coach so lost since Torchetti.

When a coach gets fired, it always reminds me of Mr.Dressup opening the tickletrunk searching for whatever retread coach that’s been thrown in there lol “oh there’s Claude Julien, nah, how about a Michael Therrien, no thanks, oh Bruce boudreau no past it’s time..hmm this McLellan doll doesn’t seem as beat up as the others, I’ll give that a whirl
Whenever a coach gets fired and people complain about retread coaches, it reminds of people saying the Kraken made a horrible decision hiring an inexperienced Jessica Campbell as an ASSISTANT coach.

Why hire a “retread”?

First time NHL coaches have an unproven idea of what will work.
They are usually wrong.
After being fired, if hired somewhere else they make adjustments.
After 2 or 3 stops they (if they are any good) have continued to adjust their philosophy to get better results.

Granted, some are just not good coaches but those that are willing to adjust along the way often find success.

Remember how bad Babcock was before he was fired after all the stars that carried the Red Wings through their fake dynasty in the late 00's left or retired, Wings fans?

Enjoy the dollar store version of that.

Am I missing something here?

What's with all the Yzerman bashing? I'm coming into this cold, but it sure seems like mindless trolling. The insults aren't even creative.

From the outside, Detroit is in rebuild mode. What exactly are people expecting?

The Red Wings have been in "rebuild mode" since 2019 under Yzerman but had top ten picks in 2017 and 2018 as well. They should be on their way to returning to the post-season by now, but Steve has flat out failed to improve the club at all during his time as GM. Part of this is drafting- Detroit has 41 GP outside the first round through all of Yzerman's tenure- part of it is abysmal FA signings and the rest is probably explained by his poor coaching decisions.

Detroit is now on pace to finish bottom five again, but we're supposed to believe he's a management genius of some kind who intended on bottoming out nearly six calendar years into his stint while now having to fire his own hand-picked coach two seasons after the fact. The best he's been able to do is load up the DRW front office with his former teammates and family members and... well that's it really. Otherwise it takes a lot of mental gymnastics to paint what he's done as "success".
