Yzerman is Marc Bergevin 2.0

I don't think he's THAT bad.

What worries me about Yzerman and Detroit in general right now is there are too many of the "old guard" from the stanley up days in the organization. Yzerman, Lidstrom, Kronwall (although he's been phenomenal in sweden) Draper, Maltby in scouting, Cleary, Fischer...I'm sure I'm forgetting a few others as well.
I worry they're spending too much time trying to recreate the glory days of the 90s and 00s while ignoring what the NHL in the 2020s is about and how much players have changed. This didn't work for Montreal when they were hring 70s and 80s cup legends, or Edmonton when they were hiring 80s and 90s cup legends.

McLellan is probably the right hire for this team though. He can get teams in the playoffs and that is exactly what Detroit needs at this point

The irony of this comment is astounding.
Champions don’t feel irony.

Paul Maurice could've resigned from Florida and came to Detroit, and I'm sure mouth breathers like this and the rest of the YDS crowd would say shit like this.
Paul Maurice actually gets the most out of his players. Detroit is a dumpster fire on every level. I bet he couldn’t at least made them wild card

Sens bois better start winning again with PIT and DET in the mix now.
McLellan last had pretty good salt & pepper goatee skills too, great to get a team in line.
I kinda hate this as an Ottawa fan.

So Detroit will switch to the 1-3-1.. Maybe that is what they needed to do. Pile of incompatible parts but I think they will find that guys like Tarasenko and Kane are not made for 1-3-1... so they may need to consider what they do with them.

It's bad when your GM of this many years has to look at his team and say, what do we need? hmmmm. We need to grind the game to a halt as best we can as we don't have the speed, skill nor smarts to play at a higher pace. You still need to retrieve and get out of your zone. They have some D that will handle this no prob and some D that will turn the puck over repeatedly. Will be a fascinating watch.

Mildly hot take:

This is not a bad move. McLellan knows how to build a team. He got the Oilers into the playoffs and then did the same with LA, both after rebuilds.

His issue is he can’t get teams over the top to take the next step.

But if you’re Detroit you need to make the playoffs first. Worry about the next coach later.
True.

The good. he will stablilize things

The bad- he will frustrate the crap out of your refusing to call timeouts or make adjustments. The Oilers badly outcoached him every playoffs.

I wonder if that conversation went like this.....

Yzerman: So Derek - did you enjoy your Christmas break ????
Lalonde: Oh yeah Steve - I loved spending some quality time with my family.
Yzerman: That's just great.
Lalonde: Those 3 days just flew by - I wish I could have spent even more time with them.
Yzerman: Well then I have some great news for you.

When a coach gets fired, it always reminds me of Mr.Dressup opening the tickletrunk searching for whatever retread coach that’s been thrown in there lol “oh there’s Claude Julien, nah, how about a Michael Therrien, no thanks, oh Bruce boudreau no past it’s time..hmm this McLellan doll doesn’t seem as beat up as the others, I’ll give that a whirl
