Tmac will be fine for them. He only got fired this last time after the kings decided to absolutely play abysmal hockey for a month. Kind of what got Woodcroft fired for the Oilers

Dont see appeal of McLellan

His Oiler and King teams didn't exactly impress and the Sharks he guided were already a deep/well built team that was among best in NHL and after his first few years performance of Sharks declined as he never got them over hump

And interestingly once he was gone the Sharks made finals and had a conf final run under Deboer

I think McLellan is good for getting a team in the playoffs. But he can’t do much once he gets there.

I think he’s particularly bad with young players as well.

Detroit kind of in a weird spot. They do need to make the playoffs though. So McLellan makes some sense. I think they waited too long to make a move this year so its kinda pointless for this year anyway.
Exactly it.

He brings a rigid structure that helps developing players learn to win, and rewards battling over anything else. He'll get them playing the right way, but won't push them over the hump.

I think you guys will see the playoffs within the next 2 seasons with TMac, but that's about it.

He's a Babcock/Tippett/Michel Therrien/Guy Boucher

I guess Yzerman could only hit Refresh on Laviolette and Brunette’s Wikipedia pages for so long before giving up waiting for the inevitable and pulling the trigger on plan C.

I agree, but I think both Edmonton and LA had better players than Detroit.

I look at this Red Wings roster and I don't see much.
They probably look worse than they actually are since Lalonde isn’t a good coach.

At least this means Yzerman doesn’t have any more excuses. It’s his roster and he has a decent enough coach now.

Not a terrible hire imo.

The Wings desperately need some type of team structure. McLellan might be boring as shit tactically, but he's the ideal guy for that type of job imo.

He's not going to be able to fix three of his top 4 defenseman being Justin Holl, Erik Gustafsson and the corpse of Jeff Petry, but he can probably make them look better.

While I agree with the overall point, Seider and Edvinsson are both in Detroit's Top 4.

If we wanna get real technical, Chiarot is too. But he's back to being shit, so that doesn't really take away from your overall point, it's just a different name to plug in.

We were bad enough that the fan base would've quietly bitched about Q and then shut up when the results came in...

Should've just pulled the trigger.
Personally I would have loved Q and think is involvement in the Hawks scandal was overstated - not going to argue this just stating where I am coming from.

But, Chris Ilitch unceremoniously fired a legendary employe and 40 year Zamboni driver Al Sabotka for pissing in a drain in the zamboni room. There is no way he is taking on the Q baggage.

Wings need a coach that can employ a system. Lalonde and Blash were never able to do that. It didn't matter when we were straight tanking but now that we have guys like Kasper, Seider, Ed, and Ray on the roster and guys like Cossa, Danielson, MBN, ASP, Buch, etc knocking on the door you can't continue to deploy chaos because it can have long term effects on those young guys.

Wings need a guy that can help them get into the playoffs and build some sort of winning ways. McLellan might not be the guy that eventually drives them to a cup but it's going to be another 3-4 seasons until we are at that level. This team is on Seider's timeline not Larkins.

Yzerman bombed our defense this year by not finding at least 1 new top 4 dman, but if we can address that I feel pretty decent about next season with a coach that can implement an actual system. Hopefully McLellan can be that guy, or Yzerman is going to be on the hot seat sooner than later.

I don't think it's Yzerman making excuses so much as fans.

This is a guy who has repeatedly said "build through the draft" signing a bunch of shit plugs during the offseason to 1 and 2 year deals. Everybody can keep saying he's trying to compete but the reality is he's buying time for the kids he drafted.

People can argue against that approach, but to pretend that's not what he's doing is ignorant.
