He probably wanted big money and this is what was fair for the market. I think this is a good deal, after 4 years if he's worth way more money we can pay him that but let's prove it first.

Glad this got signed.

Not exactly perfect but it makes sense for both parties. We'll wait a few seasons to judge this

If the CBJ is winning games I would be.

I don’t celebrate Laine goals or root for him over the team.
Nobody does that. You're just imagining a type of fan to get mad at. When you argue his merits within reason it's fine but your constant "hard uncomfortable facts me vs the blissfully unaware fanbase" stuff is so annoying. Not even Finnish fans who co-opted the CBJ once he was traded here think that way. Rooting for Laine and the Jackets isn't mutually exclusive, quite the opposite actually !

Took a discount from what we were expecting. I’m guessing that’s why it’s a 4 year deal and not 5 or 6. He took less money for less years.

Glad to have him. Welcome patty
I think everyone realized he wasn't getting the money he wanted in the market right now. Easily allows him to get paid bigger once league revenue's get stabilized again and the cap significantly increases.

Laine will be 28 UFA with raised cap. Good deal for him. Suggests that he asked for Werenski money on long-term deal.

Not too of a big risk for CBJ with that term. Even AAV Should look pretty good after they play him with Johnny

I think it's good contract. If the first possibility was 5-6 years, it's only 1-2 years less. Than Patrik can play better but don't forget his injuries. So I think it's good for both sides. And what is important, nobody knows what will be in 2026 year. I mean in the world.

So do we have to move anyone before this contract is official?
As far as I understand yes. He's officially signed but we have to clear money via trade (or LTIR but unlikely we do that) before a certain date in October. Teams are allowed to be 10% percent over the cap in the summer I think.

So $8.7M would mean they are now $6M+ over the cap? Capfriendly have them with space for roughly $2.3M and don't have this new deal listed yet.

Funny enough the list 3 guys on injured reserve totally about $6M but will they go on LTIR come the start of the season (Jenner, Texier and Tarasov)?

Looks like he knows the Cap is supposed to jump, in 2-3 years and wanted another chance to cash in at the higher prices. Hard to blame him, although I would have expected more of a discount for this short of a contract. Regardless, He's set himself up pretty well for a huge payday if he and Johnny Hockey are as electric as we think they can be. I wouldn't be shocked if we end up losing him for nothing because we are competing for a cup in that window. Its a strong deal for Laine, but not great for the team, IMO (other than the fact we keep him on the team)

I’m not as familiar with nhl cap rules. Can you go over the cap at all or is it like the nfl and can’t be over at all?

There is about $3.5M on Capfriendly that we will be sending to the minors, meaning we are currently over by around $3M with Bemstrom left to sign. Trading Nyquist seems to be the obvious solution.
