Nolan took 25 games to score those 8 goals. Cournoyer had 10 powerplay goals straight in 30 games to start the season in 1965-66 and 11 powerplay goals in 29 games in 1966-67. So Laine needs 4 more powerplay goals without another type of goal to break the all time record."Laine became the first player on record (since 1933-34) to score eight straight power-play goals for a team. He also became the third forward to score his first eight goals of a season with the man-advantage, joining Yvan Cournoyer (1966-67, 1965-66) and Owen Nolan (1995-96)."
Laine scores again as Canadiens beat Red Wings 5-1 to take two-game series on consecutive nights
Patrik Laine scored on the power play again, and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Detroit Red Wings for the second straight night, winning 5-1.apnews.com
8 in 9 now, crazy!
Maybe you didn't understand what happened. Laine scored 8 straight powerplay goals for his team without anybody else on the team scoring on the powerplay inbetween. He broke Phil Esposito's record of 7 straight powerplay goals for the Bruins in 1970-71. And Laine did it without playing with the late great Bobby Orr...That's a weird record to celebrate. It's basically a thinly veiled how-long-can-you-go-without-scoring-at-even-strength but you realise it's not really something to hang your hat on as a goal-scorer so you want to do it as quickly as possible.

Both.
Matthews has been healthier. I give him that
Laine is a good player, he'll never come within 10 miles of a Hart Trophy win, extremely streaky one dimensional winger with an elite shot.
Celebrate him for what he is, don't get ridiculous with it, and this is coming from somebody who certainly likes Laine and sees 50 goal potential there
I still think trading for Granlund from the Sharks could be a good idea. Even if he is an UFA this summer he could actually help Habs get a playoff-spot. Dach can center 3rd. Granlund`s been almost PPG now for 2yrs on maybe the worst team in the league. And his best talent is passing and 2-way play.We have a bit of a problem with a dire need to get Laine a set-up center.
columbus never had system and quarterback or feeder to utilise Laine speciality skill, winnipeg neither had besides wheeler somehow found other lane (pun intended) to get there. There’s a guy linking me to these threads.
I literally couldn’t care less about what Laine is doing in Montreal. He’ll score goals and they’ll lose games. If Montreal fans find that acceptable, whoopty doo. Some will become infatuated with the one timers, while other legitimate and long time hockey fans will become disillusioned from all the losing and lack of effort and intelligence that plagues the play of Patty Laine.
The CBJ has scoring wingers like Kent Johnson, Kirill Marchenko, and Yegor Chinakhov FLOURISHING, because Laine is gone, and the puck/icetime/opportunities don’t all have to go through Laine to keep the “superstar” happy and to keep his stats up in order for his fanboys to use it as his defense. And the team is scoring fine as a whole, even with Chinakhov, arguably the teams most dangerous forward, being out for awhile.
Ok bye, good hockey to watch.
IMO if you set a record against the Red Wings it should come with some kind of asteriskWeird record?
It's NHL history. Just like when he was the 4th fastest to 100 goals in NHL history, with several injuries.
Just wait until he gets first line talent around him and the ice time to go with it.
Ya'll not ready for prime Laine. All about to go to school.
hereIMO if you set a record against the Red Wings it should come with some kind of asterisk
No matter how many times you say this, it still doesn't mean what you want it to mean. And Laine did it without playing with the late great Bobby Orr...
I hear you and appreciate the feedback.
I disagree with the assessment though. I never suggested Hart Trophy but I wouldn't be shocked if he won it, after a 70+ goal season
I am celebrating him for what he is.
In a massive field of all kinds of workhorses and mustangs and whatever the finest horses are, there's this one with a tusk on it's head and it can fly.
Bobby Orr is still around...Maybe you didn't understand what happened. Laine scored 8 straight powerplay goals for his team without anybody else on the team scoring on the powerplay inbetween. He broke Phil Esposito's record of 7 straight powerplay goals for the Bruins in 1970-71. And Laine did it without playing with the late great Bobby Orr...
I'm not saying Laine would ever hit 60+ goals but the stat watching you're performing is kinda narrow minded view.I would be very shocked, he's always been an extremely streaky player and I don't believe he has the overall tools to produce 60+ in a season, let alone 70.
I mean lets be honest here, Laine turns 27 4 months from now and has eclipsed the 40 goal mark once in his career thus far.
I can sometimes hear his voice like he was still alive...Bobby Orr is still around...
I know what "eight straight power-play goals for a team" means. It's not a particularly difficult concept that requires a lot of understanding.Maybe you didn't understand what happened. You clearly didn't understand it as you used the following wording in your original post: " It's basically a thinly veiled how-long-can-you-go-without-scoring-at-even-strength". Esposito did score at even strenght inbetween the 8 straight powerplay goals that he scored back in 1970-71,I know what "eight straight power-play goals for a team" means. Instead of assuming I must be an idiot, we could perhaps entertain the possibility that I was rather obviously referring to scoring "his first eight goals of a season with the man-advantage". I don't care if he's the third player ever to do that; I think it's a weird statistic to keep tabs on.
