Can and will be are 2 different things. It's not true to what I believe, but it's somehow true to what you believe? 2 of them will needs raises before Tavares takes his discount. So, go and do it. If you're going to roll with whatever defense fits in your cap structure to give Nylander his raise on the next contract, go for it. In my opinion, he's not re-signing in Toronto for 8+ unless they find a way to win the cup and the organization wants to keep the core. Staying a point per game player over the last 2 years is going to be a pretty good raise.
You said the Leafs couldn't resign them, I said they can even if the cap increases per year are small. We weren't talking about anything other then the Leafs ability through the cap to sign them.

The Leafs have had quite literally zero success with these players. The Devils didn’t have talent or a goalie for much of the last decade.
Playoff success? Sure, regular season I'm afraid not.

Devils have missed the playoffs in 9 out of the last 10 years. And by your logic, they've had 0 success this year.

Why did a team as bad as the Devils for the last decade fail to accumulate talent?

You’re seeing the talent they’ve accumulated since Lou left. I guess you just don’t understand how rebuilds work.

That's such a cop out. I also said going to be able to afford them, you know because other things exist then blowing your cap on a few players.

I don’t see the fit here. Rangers will want something more substantial than a pick in the 20’s. TML will not want to give up multiple 1’s. TML also don’t have any prospects that move the needle for me in this type of deal. Rangers can’t afford to resign a Nylander or add any sizable contracts. Rangers will ride with Laf for the foreseeable future.

Because we drafted Zacha and McLeod instead of Barzal and McAvoy in 2015 & 2016

If you look at the future cap structure of the Leafs, they have more then enough to pay raises to Matthews, Nylander, and Marner without hurting the cap structure of the team. Muzzins cap is gone next season, brodies the season after, and when Marner needs resigning Tavares contract is up as well. The Leafs also have atleast 4 NHL ready wingers right now. They can and will play in the top 9 or bottom 6 next year on minimal cost contracts. Leafs also have sandin and Liljegren who both look like top 4 D as well.

A cursory look at capfriendy the Leafs have 16m in expiring contracts that coincide with Matthews and Nylander requiring extensions.
With the cap rising, it looks fairly manageable.

It will be more challenging the following year when Marner and Tavares need extensions. However, I cannot imagine Tavares given his age would require another 11m per year contract.

People have been talking about the Leafs cap issues for what 4 or 5 years now? While they sit comfortably in a playoff spot with their top 3 defensemen injuried. Must be all that lack of depth they have due to the big 4 contracts letting them weather these injuries.

that's HFB Fox offer, but it wouldn't actually get it done

NYR not looking to move Laf (maybe some impatient, entitled fans are)

Leafs want to add a Canadian-born/trained, cost-controlled, recent 1OA,
21 just 6 weeks ago,
why shouldn't it cost a whole lot?
you trade for Laf for the potential, not 'counting stats' to-date ...
At certain point, 'Stas to Date' reflect a player potential. Laf is getting closer and closer to that point.

Laf has struggled this year. But last season he had 19 even strength goals. More than Tavares, Caufield, Bergeron etc. He would not come cheap.

at just past 21? only to the lightly informed
he gets virtually no PP time
leads his draft class in GP, 2nd in G, 3rd in points, even tho he obviously has not hit his stride yet

while more than ever, in all sports, some very young guys produce immediately at highest level, that ain't the only dev arc

dumping on kids in their early 20's is a HFB pastime,
but not anywhere near how real hockey decisions are made

NYR aren't down on Laf, don't want to move him

the whole point, of Threads like this, are to suggest a seeming 'equitable trade' based on 'stats to date' so OP's team can steal the better asset

no thanks, from NYR

Agreed. I don't think Laf is a bust. But he's certainly more "potential" and "future" than he is "proven" and "win-now".

There's no reason for NYR to get rid of him for cheap. And there's certainly no reason for Toronto to pay handsomely for him. There's no deal to be made here. NYR is happy to keep him, and Toronto can look elsewhere for forward help.

I just don't understand how you can see people argue this, watch the Leafs sign their players off their ELC's, and then still think it can't happen.

And the no depth thing is so dumb. They were a top 5 NHL team last season and are one again so far this season. They are literally no different than most contending teams. Just instead of paying Pastranak 7M and Foligno 4M for example, they pay Marner 11M and Simmonds league min. Same shit different flavor.

Or Pasta, krecji, Bergeron and a minimum wager.

facts are there is only 1 tough year potentially and it is the year after Nylander and Matthews are UFA's. I bet Nylander gets 8-9M on the open market and the Leafs can afford that if they wanted.

Almost a 100% chance Tavares signs a league min deal when his contract is up even if he is worth a lot more as that is a theme with the team. Spezza, Gio, Tavares, etc

I think more like 4-5 million, he’ll be 34 when deal is up, and turns 35 during camp on his next deal.

I watched quite a few Rangers game last year. Most of Laf's goal last year were empty net and tapped in where the goalies left the net completely opened. The young player who impressed me is Chytil and not Laf.

And then every year all you see is what would it take to get this player in Toronto. 50% retained, of course, while taking back the cap you no longer want. Can it be done, sure. Will it be done, no, I don't think so. I think Nylander is the odd man out here unless they win the cup. Are they going to spend 8ish or whatever it takes on Nylander? I just don't think they will. I think Nylander will end up pricing himself out of what they can afford on the cap for his spot.

Why wouldn't he look at Mathews and Marner and even Tavares and say I want the same as them?

More importantly why wouldn't his agent?
