I'm trying but some of these poster have no idea what they are talking about.

Oh boy if you think it’s bad here you should check out the idiots in the Tkachuk to the Rangers thread.
You’d think no one in NY watched hockey but then I know that’s not true because the Islanders have an incredible history of Cup wins.

I think the Rangers should consider this seeing as there’s a lot of talk about Lafreniere being treated like a second-class player in New York and him wanting more responsibility elsewhere.

Not to mention, Alexis would love to play for his childhood team. Montreal has a lot of useful foundational pieces that might be of interest.

Well he just signed a 7 year $50+ mil deal with the Rangers a couple months ago. Who gives that kind of contract to a second class player?

Lafreniere is on pace for 28 G and 57 Pts at even strength. Those totals last year would tie him with Mikko Rantanen (12th leaguewide in EVG) and Zach Hyman/Mitch Marner (T-15th league-wide in EVP). And they just re-signed him to a long-term below market value deal. Why exactly are they turning around and trading him?

Lafrenière to the habs for Slafkovsky.

Both will be making similar money next year
Both were first overall picks
Montreal gets a French Canadian player.

Laffy could finally get more than a 1:23 a game on the PP. I’m sure he’s not happy about his PP time in NY, and could want a change of scenery, not sure why he doesn’t get much time on PP.

If small add needed, could be easily arranged with Habs prospect pool and/or player.
Yeah he seems totally unhappy after he just *checks notes* signed a team-favorable extension for 7 years
LAF hasn't plateau IMO.

The Rangers have been atrocious for like 8-9 games in a 11 game span.

He also doesn't get to play on the first powerplay unit. If he'd played there he'd have at least 5-10 more points at least.
He’d probably have 20-30 more points

I swear this is Sens fans upset that there was a Tkachuk to Rangers thread started, so they’re trying to effort to make up out of thin air that a guy who signed an extension a month ago is getting traded.
Drury won't give a shat about that or any player. He won't trade him for Slaf but he could trade almost anybody.

Drury came in and cleared house, he was heavily involved in getting Gorton & Davidson fired throughout the process and sent most of the guys Gorton had hired and had been around for 10+ years packing. Like I said, MTL & NYR won't deal with each other for a long time and you can write that in ink, doesn't help that they're historical rivals either.

I think that vastly overstates grudges at this level. If there was a trade to be had that was beneficial to either or both teams, and one of these GM’s elected to not go through with it solely because of some “bad blood,” either or both GMs should be fired on the spot.

The reality is that Montreal doesn’t really have any tradeable assets likely to interest the Rangers at their supposed prices, so you most likely will be correct that we won’t see a trade anytime soon, but it won’t be because some guys got fired a few seasons ago.

I like both players.
Laf would be a insta favorite and marketing dream for MON…
It kills me to see Zibby rack up PP assists and Laffy get no 1st unit time with Panarin,Fox, and Co with the absolute deadly wrister he has. He’s an even strength beast. He also plays with edge with is sorely lacking with NYR skill players a lot of the time.

Slaf is a big talented kid with a bright future…. If NYR needed to cut salary, I’d make the trade. Slaf has an extra ELC year….

NYR don’t need to cut atm. Cuylle is emerging as I and few others thought he would as more then just a 3rd liner. If I’m NYR, those + Fox don’t go anywhere. At 22 Laf is already pretty battle tested in the playoffs and is only going to up his stats when given 1st unit PP time in the near future.
Right now, lafs playoff experience and performance is the main reason I wouldn’t pull the trigger on this deal

I'd say the value is similar. I don't think Montreal is the best environment for a talented francophone player to attempt to become a real star player in the league. With Slaf being younger with higher potential I don't think Montreal should take this chance.

Rangers should pass also. Laf is a better player today. That fits the Rangers current needs more than potentially getting the better player but waiting a season or 2 for that to transpire. That's assuming he develops into a better player. That's not a given either.

I'm all for these hockey trades when they address team needs or players with high potential needing a change of scenery to unlock said potential. This seems a pointless, risky move of a young winger for another young winger just cause one player is French.

Habs would also allow him to be moved to centre, as opposed to the wing.

He doesn’t get centre duty in NY, chance to go back to his natural position, and only 1:23 of PP time.

I see a thread with Lafreniere for JT Miller, wonder which one Ranger fans prefer.

Not a Rangers fan, but I'd be shocked if they parted with Laf for soon to be 32 year old. As great as Miller is teams don't trade young, proven core pieces like him.

Didn’t Habs fans learn with Drouin you can’t force a French player center no matter how badly you want them to be lol. Interesting trade idea though, if the Habs wanted to take a quicker next step I’d do it

Laf is performing better than Slaf and has got better year on year. He is an extremely valuable asset to the team. He has also proven that he can perform and drive the team in the playoffs.

Slaf's offense is heavily reliant on PP. Nearly 30% (45% this season) of his points are from the PP compared to Laf's 8%.

Last year Slafkovsky was better, and is better versus Laf at the same age
I agree that Laf is currently a better player, but I wouldn't make the trade, if it came to me

Both franchises are happy with their players.

Neither team does this one for one, neither team adds to entice the other.

And rightfully so.

Are the Rangers still putting a washed up Mika Zibanejad on PP1 instead of Lafreniere?? Absolutely disgraceful

He definitely wasn't 😂

As per D2 for both players, Slaf did have a better season than Laf's D2

he's never said anything like that, and while obviously players are obviously very careful with public comments versus what they might say privately, his interactions with teammates and body language has never remotely suggested he was unhappy. he also chose to sign a 7 year extension to stay, which seems odd if he wanted to be elsewhere.

i'm sure he wouldn't be upset to play in mtl, but who's to say he doesn't like playing in ny? it's a pretty solid place to live and a huge market without the fishbowl element of playing in a canadian city. the media and public attention he'd get if he was in mtl would be insanity given he'd be a hometown kid and 1st overall pick....that's not something a lot of people would choose.

i really hope the rangers don't even entertain the idea of moving him anywhere. this kid is the future c.

By what metric are you making the bolded claim?

YEARSEASONPLAYERGPEVPP/60PP TOIPP Points

They scored at a roughly equal rate on the PP last year, but outside of that, Laf was significantly better. And that's not even counting what he did in the playoffs.

If you look at their respective D+2 seasons, Slaf was a bit better, but Slaf hasn't improved on his numbers thus far in his D+3 season.

This year, Laf has only widened the gap between them. Maybe Slaf's D+4 and D+5 seasons will end up being better than Laf's, but right now, there's nothing to suggest that Slaf will be the better player going forward.
