Even better. Trade him for a late 1st and then bring him back on a bargain deal in the offseason.
Or even better, trade him for a late 1st and don't bring him back at all.

I feel like most of the wheels already fell off a few months ago.
I don’t think we were-are inherently the worst team in the league. I penciled us in for fourth to sixth worst. We are currently 1-3 points off that pace, pre-TDL.
The wheels have not fallen off IMO. They have been playing pretty well and they compete every night. Even in losses to Philly and Tampa they played well.
Focus on Staal in the back.
Why do we want productive players at this stage again? Players over 30. Players who will want more money? Term?If he's willing to take a 2 year deal I'd bring him back. Still a very productive player.

I’ll trade him and if he wants to come back, he’ll have to give a huge discount on term. He's a good leader and mentor. If he's willing to take 1 or 2 year deal on the cheaper side I'm all for it. Can't play a team of Ziba, Kreider and kids.

But I’m trading him and getting the assets.

Also if importance is the side fact that he was part of the last leadership group. That's what I'm saying. Trade him and if he wants to come back and for a reasonable price I'm all for it.
