I know this is a pretty hot/unrealistic take.... But I could see Kopitar signing something like a 3 year, $3 million AAV contract after next season.

The guy is one of the classiest, most salt of the earth guys in the NHL. He's from a small town in Slovenia and will have already made well over $100 million in his career by the time his contract expires. He's been in LA his whole career and has set up his family with a really great life here. Genuinely seems to really love this city/organization. I'm sure he doesn't want to up-root his family and wants to play another couple years / have another shot at a cup.

I definitely won't hold it against him if he doesn't accept a contract like that and wants to try to secure as much money as possible for him and his family. But at this point in his career it also wouldn't surprise me if he is willing to sign something really team friendly that allows him to finish out his career in LA while also giving the Kings some cap room to work with so the team is as competitive as possible. Andddd while also making himself another $9 million lol. Everyone wins.

Then yeah, he slides down the lineup and ends up as a 2nd or 3rd line center or potentially moving to wing.
Hahahahaha man that press jacket really made an impression on you. Lol.

Lol I mean idk man..... That's what I'd do if I had already made over $120 million dollars in the last 20 years and already had my family comfortably set up in one place and genuinely wanted to win another cup.

Get nearly $10 million more out of it while also helping the organization out a bit.

But you definitely could be right lol, I for sure could be dreaming

I do think it’s evidently clear that theyre worried about the Byfield problem. There’s no other reason to pursue PLD

The real frustrating thing is it would be two poor evaluations of Byfield, one after the draft and one with a season in the organization. Eichel was a unique player (a true #1C) that was available and the Kings chose not to pursue him, believing they had their future 1C in house already.
Yeah there is.
The Kings would not be pursuing PLD if Byfield were what he was expected to be by now. You think they'd be pursuing a C if they had Kopitar/QB/Danault as a dominant 1-2-3 down the middle?

I really dislike that idea. His development has been such a rocky road, things finally start to click for him at wing, and we're going to throw him back to center where he was struggling?

I think it's pretty clear he's more suited to wing. His skating and stamina are his weak points. That's not good for a center who has to cover more of the ice.
Me too.

If anything, the best thing for Vilardi would be to assign him hundreds of hours of Corey Perry footage for summer homework. Vilardi could grow into an outstanding winger if handled properly. No more tinkering.

How is Byfield a perfect piece for the Kings right now?

The Kings are a team trying to win a Stanley Cup in a 1-3 year window before their 2 best players fall off a cliff
The answer to this question depends entirely on how you view the player.

If you still believe Byfield has good potential (lets just say the potential to be a good top 6 forward) then it makes a lot of sense why Byfield is a pretty perfect piece for the Kings right now and the timeline they're looking at.

If not, and you have already decided he's never going to be anything more than a 3rd liner, then yeah obviously you're not going to really think there's a fit.

Admittedly, we don't know what the next year or two is going to look like for QB. Does he explode and become an excellent player? Or does he continue to underwhelm and end up more/less a bust? Both are possible outcomes at this point.

As a hypothetical let's just say he does turn into even just a 50-60+ point player next year. That's of course really perfect for the Kings. He'd be a key contributor on an ELC - exactly what teams trying to compete for a stanley cup need with today's cap situation. You would (again, in this hypothetical) begin to see a player start to emerge at 21 years old that you can potentially try to build around - Right at the time your 35+ aging franchise center is becoming a UFA.

Now Herby I know you're not the biggest #byfieldbeliever and that's OK... Just throwing out the hypothetical scenario that shows how he could potentially be a perfect piece for the Kings.

This is so bogus, making the the team and being an impact player are not always the same thing. But not surprising the group that believes only McDavid types can jump straight to the NHL.

How can a guy like Mark Yanetti who actually works for an NHL team be this ignorant to what is going with young players in the league?
Do these guys even watch the NHL, or are they exclusively watching young players?

And guys like this are who people like Axl think need to have some extraordinary qualification to do their jobs, like they are brain surgeons or rocket scientists.
It was actually a much longer and nuanced discussion on the podcast. I'm pretty sure he spent a good 7-10 minutes talking about this stuff (though maybe that was my sleep aid kicking in).

Yannetti said they project players 7 years out with their analytics. The higher the pick is, the earlier that impact is seen. He acknowledges there are other ways to do it, but again, pointed out how they do it slower for better or worse.

It can also come much faster than 5 years.

Like with Clarke, he said he was NHL ready last year (contrary to Surf Nutz's assertion). Unfortunately, there was no follow up specifically why he was sent to the CHL, but my complete guess is that decision wasn't his.

With Byfield, they'd like to see more and think it's fair to expect that. But he also feels he's on track, because even if the points aren't there, he's doing the little things right and he's one of the players who best improved Kopitar's line.

It really is worth a listen if you haven't heard it yet. It's a 2-hour episode but I'm sure Yannetti talked for a good 1.5 hours of it. I think a summary or paraphrasing may cause some misunderstandings (all due respect to Schmooley, who did a great job, but barring a typed transcript, there are a lot of factors.

on one hand it is awesome to be in included in the names, on the other it seems like this team is not ready for that
Just some of the names the Kings have acquired the last 10ish years are incredible even if they didn't work out. Who would've ever thought Iginla, Kovalchuk, or Lecavalier would be wearing a Kings jersey. Obviously those 3 specifically were towards the end of their careers.

I guess one good thing is that Blake has SOME flexibility right now to do whatever he wants to the roster with picks and prospects. The only problem is I disagree with him on everything.

But

PLD is not an answer. He's a 2C or low-end 1C and a moody malcontent. While a Byfield trade would make 'sense' (enigmatic big guy high pick for a further along enigmatic big guy high pick with character concerns) you're tossing possible upside for a 'sure thing' 2C for one solitary year.

Byfield is at worst an ELC roster body they need him, and he's the only POSSIBLE current apparent
answer long-term at 1C. They can't trade him. But if they do, they're signing themselves up for a one year last breath shot at the Cup. I might be okay with that too since it would signal Blake and the house with him is a goner soon.

I listened and it was great insight to the draft and prospect development. Saying they project the prospects to be making the NHL in 5 years time and fully contributing in years 6 and 7. Saying Toffoli, Kempe and Vilardi were perfect examples and were right on track. Saying Kupari is not as good scorer as Kempe but he is in that same mold/path and these next 2 year are critical. He said there have been prospects that they brought up too early and that has hurt their development. Saying they aren't that worried about the goalie pipeline because it's the easiest to fix and it doesn't have to be done by drafting. Talking about how Jack Hughes needs to get bigger as he looks 15 but is 19 and that he should have played longer in the USHL before jumping to college and that hurts his development. He'll have a longer path to the NHL than others in his draft class but has to be signed sooner because he is already a junior in college. Saying they don't draft for need and when they tried it bit them in the ass.

It's a great listen if anyone has an 1 hour.

Just a quick point: It wouldn't be one year with PLD. He's an RFA this year. You'd be getting him locked into a long-term contract if you were making that trade.

From a cap point of view, it almost had to be Vilardi. Depends on his contract. How cheap of a bridge deal will he go for?

Hard to really judge without their last salary listed as a starting point.

Who really knows what they're thinking. They've been liked to Pierre-Luc Dubois, Tom Wilson, Connor Hellebuyck, Thatcher Demko, Juuse Saros...
Center, toughness, goaltending. All positions of weakness. Seems like they’re planning on the increasing likelihood that Byfield is a flop.

Sooooo Clarke in the AHL all year then eh
I genuinely really don't think so (and of course hope not). I think they see Clarke as a clear exception to the whole 5 year to make the NHL projection.

Yannetti was gushing about Clarke in the interview. Said at last years development camp it was Brandt Clarke as easily the best player on the ice, then a MASSIVE gap, then Byfield, then another MASSIVE gap, then a group of a couple guys.

He also talked about how NHLers were immediately asking questions along the "holy sh*t who the hell is this kid???" lines.

He's special. And thankfully, everyone seems to know it.

Another good read for those interested. Think he sums up the whole PLD situation really well.

That’s kinda the thing. There’s nothing in Blake’s actions that shows willingness to be patient. Byfields inability to make big strides is the only reason the Kings are looking at PLD. I’m personally fine with that trade as you know why. But also yes it will definitely signal the end of Blake’s regime. No way he’d survive by abandoning the rebuild and the sacrifices he made with the kids don’t pan out to anything big.

He’s taking a big swing. Is he gonna hit it big or miss it wide. I am sure it’s a miss wide but I think that’s also because he know he’s on the tightrope.

Byfield is definitely available imo.

The article above me is honestly not Austin’s best work because the Kings do need another forward that can play wing and center. It gives them flexibility for the next season.

Blake wouldn’t sell assets like crazy to obtain Korpisalo And Gavrikov. It’s clear he wants to take a run with this team. While byfield might end up becoming a good player his snails pace growth is working against him.
