Provided he signs a long-term deal, I'm trading Byfield in a heartbeat.
Why though?????? PLD is not a 1C on a championship caliber team. 1C for the future is one of the Kings biggest needs. So why trade a 20 year old with a ton of untapped potential for anything BUT a proven 1C?? I know people have doubts about Byfield but trading him now for a 2nd line center is absolutely not the move and could look completely atrocious in 2 years.
That said, I think people are over-estimating what the Kings would have to give up to get him. The Jets literally HAVE to trade him or he's just going to walk for free and he's made it clear he'll only consider signing with a few teams so they have a limited number of destination options. They have little to no bargaining power.
For that reason, all of Byfield, Vilardi, and Clarke should be completely and totally off the table. A first round pick should also be completely off the table in my opinion. The only way an asset like that goes the other way should be if Hellebuyck is included in the deal and we'd need to put together a massive package to get that done obviously.
I think you realistically could acquire PLD for a a couple draft picks and maybeeeeeee a B level prospect. Then sign him to a 1-2 year deal. If the Kings really do want to try to win another cup with Kopitar and Doughty, this would give them a pretty solid chance of doing that.
Then if that doesn't work out... You hire a new GM and re-tool on the fly for a year or 2 and try to get back in contention with a new core not centered around Kopi/Drew.
I know many would be against it and I know people would point out Blake has no long term plan and the Kings aren't good enough to be in 'win now' mode and etc etc but..... You'd have to admit it'd be pretty fun to add a fairly big name like PLD.
If the Kings are actually going to go all in for the next year or two.... It's an intriguing option.
That could give them a top 9 of something like:
Byfield - Kopitar - Kempe
Fiala - Dubois - Vilardi
Moore - Danault - Arvidsson
You can point out Kopitar's age and whatever else you want, but that's a pretty incredible top 9. Can't really imagine a single other team having that kind of center depth (and just forward depth in general). If you add a decent goalie as well and Clarke steps in like we're hoping he does. The Kings could have an absolutely electric squad. If it doesn't work out... Obviously it would be Bye bye Blake.
