The one thing that baffles me is the lack of goals by Kaliyev with his slapshot.
That was a bomb in juniors.
I was thinking about this the other day actually and I think a big part of it is just the level of defensive play in the NHL. In juniors, Arty could just float around and get lost in coverage and then all of the sudden there's a cross ice pass open and boom, he one-times it into the back of the net.
In the NHL, players are MUCH better defensively and those cross ice passes get intercepted or broken up way more often than not. I think it's been a big thing Kaliyev's been adjusting to in the NHL. It's a lot harder for him to get open and lose his man and those one time opportunities are few and far between.
And when those opportunities do exist, goalies are much better at tracking those cross ice passes and getting over to make the save.
Another factor is linemates tbh... Prior to this year, Kaliyev spent most of his time playing on the 4th line with players that lacked the playmaking ability to fire a cross ice pass right into his wheel-house. Hopefully this year as he continues to play with better linemates, we start to see those one timers show up.
