Speculation: Kypreos: Oilers interested in Binnington

If its so easy peasy they would have done it…

It is literally that easy.

Just to be clear, your easy solution is to:

A. waive 3 players and move them to the minors or hope someone takes them…

No one has to take them. Nothing prevents us from sending them down to save $1.15M in cap per contract.

B. Attach an asset or two to Skinner or Pickard to move them.

One of them would go the other way in any trade for a goalie. Why would we need to attach an asset?

C. Send assets to two different teams to get retention on a new goalie at 75%.

Which we just did yesterday to acquire Frederic.

Again, this is not impossible to do. Management just doesn't want to. Why you'd want to support that kind of incompetence is beyond me.

1. (snort)

2. Sure, banish three NHL players, each with roughly ten years & 500+ games under their belts to ride the AHL buses for a while to save a few dollars. Good luck getting anybody to sign there ever again without even more of those NMCs that they already are handing out like candy (speaking of which, do any of them have a NMC? Can't send them down with one unless they agree & good luck with that). Or other teams see decent quality vets as depth for 'their' playoff runs & claim them. Now what?

3. Probably because the goalies you have going the other way suck & will make any team getting them worse. Absolutely no team will do that straight up, especially knowing how much Edmonton needs a quality goalie. They're going to pay

4. Sure did, & it was a somewhat complex three way deal. What have you got left to toss around to get it done?

5. It truly is astounding with a hockey mind like yours why you aren't wearing a suit, sitting behind a big desk in one of the various NHL team's front offices. Your talents are being wasted doing whatever it is that you are currently doing...

The Oilers could waive Janmark, Klingberg and Kapanen to create $0.5M in non LTIR cap space, enough for a $2M goalie with 75% retention. That could be as much as $4.6M if S. Skinner was going the other way, or $3M if it was Pickard.

There, solved. Your water carrying for management is BTFO.
and now we have 3 roster spots to fill to ice a game roster on top of the cap hit of the new goalie.

so no, that doesn't solve anything.

We don't, actually. But you keep moving the goalposts so we all know your only purpose here is to defend management at every turn. The question is, why?

we we waive 3 players, who is dressing in the games?

im not defending management. Im operating in the circumstances that exist and tempering my expectations likewise.

Everyone except Drai is sucking this year. The Oilers are alot more than a goalie away from a cup.

nobody is acting or suggesting it will be easy to get out of the situation they are in...

IMO the oilers will never win if they have the following contracts on the team at the same time:

McDavid
Drai
Nurse
Skinner
Kane

Something has to give...

Stan the man to the rescue, LOL.
You should follow this other back and forth I have in this thread…

Just to connect dots, and assuming Kypreos is being genuine here, maybe this could be Binnington for Kane. Apparently the Oilers asked for Kanes NTC list, and the teams who might be available to trade could be someone like St. Louis, not the Chicagos or San Joses in the league

Edit: and FYI I'm not saying that'd be the whole deal

Stauffer said Oilers aren't upgrading in net. He is a lot more plugged in than Kypreos who makes this shit up for clicks and views
Bowman also has said publicly that they aren't looking for a goalie. I'm hoping that they are just blowing smoke so they don't seem so desperate, as other teams will surely bend the Oilers over a barrel in any goalie trade right now.

I believe Stauffer was the guy that said EDM was sniffing around on Frederic this past week. I've come to learn that he seems like a reputable guy for EDM.

Stauffer is an Oilers mouthpiece who is better connected when his masters want him to be...

I imagine there are things you choose to leak to Bob and things you don't... Sewering the confidence of the young goalie you might be stuck with is probably not one of those things you leak.

Here's hoping.

What options do we have? We don’t have the assets or the cap space to acquire someone… we’d have to spend resources to move him… we’d have to spend resources to replace him, we’d have to free up cap space to afford him.
I think he’d be a fine backup. Someone like Gibson with retention would be a help and I don’t think Skinner has negative value

that is what happens when you pay a handful of guys too much, it leaves the club handcuffed with shitty players at various positions. Binnington would make the oilers a much better team not doubt. The blues would have to take a shitty contract back, not sure they will.

seems to me that the blues would not ever have a better opportunity to sell high on him, they should trade him and run with Hofer.
Not sure if the Oilers have one to move. They've given all their big contracts no move clauses. Idiots. Anyone who could be a useful player but is underperforming is not able to be moved. The only one, is literally Evander Kane, and I can't see any team taking him with his age and all of his surgeries over the last year.

This. If Bowman tells Stauffer they aren't looking for a goalie, Stauffer will report it as the gospel, even if Bowman isn't being truthful about it.

I don't agree that we'd have to spend assets to move him. He's paid cheaply for a goalie, even for a good backup, he makes little. Plus he has upside still. He's really young, and has cup final experience. I would be happy with him as a backup for whoever we got as a starter, but it might be easier for the cap to move him out in the goalie deal, if it should happen. I'm still hopeful that Skinner and a pick can get us Binnington or Gibson. I'm not holding my breath though.

well, at times you have to add pieces to sell some terrible contract, perhaps the oilers have to do that...not sure that they have much in the way of sweeteners to make it worthwhile for a club...ah, contracts that are overpayments and the dreaded NM clauses that are included...good luck Stan and oilers fans.

I'd be all for waiving Klingberg and Kapanen if we are bringing in a player that can help the team. Janmark has struggled, but I'm on the fence about waiving him after his stellar performance last year in the playoffs. Waiving them gives us 2M in space just for Klinger and Kapanen.

If it's a goalie we are bringing in, we can bury all of Pickard's hit as well, so we wouldn't have to pay anyone to take him. We can just waive him, and if he clears, he goes to Bakersfield to take over for Colin Delia.

We did the 75% retention just yesterday. If that option is out there (it might be for a UFA goalie, it won't if it is a goalie with term, like Binnington or Gibson), Bowman has shown he will do that.

Are the Blues considering moving Binnington though?
St. Louis' GM put him on Team Canada for the 4 Nations, so either he loves Binnington and absolutely won't move him, or he was showcasing him so he gets more interest.

I don't think Armstrong was in charge of the 4 nations roster. He did an interview I think with Strickland about the process when they were talking about Thomas not making the roster. He said in general when they're on the council for it they don't vote for their own players.
