It's crazy how it suddenly fills up in here after a a quiet day so far. Quincey generated some interest.

I don't think Santini is starting the year here. Merrill's been playing the right side starting out in training camp for a reason.

Idk how I feel about this, only cuz I remember Red Wings fans wanting him gone for a long time.

In 2013 he was bad and we wanted him gone but hes been one of our best defenseman since. We let him go because we have young guys coming in that are more important to our future and are unable to pass thru waivers anymore so we cant just send them down.

Well, he's pretty terrible.

not really

seems like a lot of the Detroit fans are saying he was used in a mostly shutdown type role the past few years. So maybe the plan is to pair him with Lovejoy and turn that into our "shutdown" pair to give Greene-Severson more of a chance to put up points

Well that's kind of exciting, thank you!

Suddenly I'm more confident in our team this season. I mean I'm not expecting him to be the difference maker but considering our other options were Moore, Merrill, and Auvitu I'd rather have pick one of them and Quincey as opposed to two of them. But we'll see how it shakes out in the end.

If he can be a solid shutdown type for us, that would be good. I thought that was the biggest hole in our defense with Larsson gone, so maybe a combination of Lovejoy and Quincey can alleviate some of that, and always smart to bring in a player with some experience given some of the youth on the blueline. Also we get to add to our Kyle collection. :yo:

Physical number 4 DD. Had issues with his return to Detroit at first, mostly with all the new D and him having to switch his style. For the last 2.5 seasons he's been on the top defensive unit with Danny DeKeyser having to shut down opposing team's top lines.

I figured 3 years at 3M AAV.

Input from a Wings fan on the FA board.

i put my money on this

That'd be okay, but I hope they don't handle as many tough minutes as Larsson and Greene did last year. I think the tough minutes have to be a bit more evenly distributed this year, or else the shutdown pairing is going to do more sinking than swimming. (Not a criticism of Lovejoy or Quincey; just an acknowledgement that giving them the minutes Larsson and Greene got last year would probably not be sustainable or successful.)

This is a steal for your team, Quincey really was solid the past two seasons.

2.5 seasons. The turning point was going into the NY of 2014 when he and Smith were moved from each other. Coaching staff has tried out lines but he and DeKeyser always end up back together. Very physical. Doesn't add much offensively like he did in Los Angeles and Colorado. Has lots of snarl and will be a consistent PK guy. Love this signing for New Jersey.

I would have preferred Seidenberg, but I'm not going to complain here. I thought Quincey was more offensive than defensive and did not realize he was used in a shutdown role in Detroit.

Should definitely help give us some more stability on the backend which we need. I wasn't particularly fond of pairing any of our young RD with Moore or Merrill.

Quincey is definitely better than Seidenberg.

The thing was I saw Seidenberg as more of the PK specialist and defensive guy which we really needed. Did not realize Quincey was used heavily defensively of late, I thought he was more of an offensive guy.

Quincey is definitely better than Seidenberg.

I think it likely also has to do with foot speed and agility to move the puck. And I like Seidenberg a lot. But Quincey is a fairly mobile guy and more able with the puck than seids.

Well, you've obviously seen him more than me, so I hope you're right. Saw him play a ton (majority of GP) from 2012 to 2014 and wasn't impressed.

We needed a vet anyway so definitely not mad about the signing.

Quincey is fine, I was expecting more negative reactions because in the minds of fans a player is either amazing or terrible with no room in between. This also means Merrill is going to the Jets in a package for Trouba :sarcasm:
