Disagree. JFJ turned a playoff team into a non-playoff team. Whatever faults Dubas has, that makes him better by comparison.
He drafted sore strong players too. That teams organization was pretty much completely messed up at that time and he had to pass every single move by a board of directors etc. Teachers pension idiots.
Fletcher was in gutting the team before he got hold of it too wasn’t it? It was the decent in to the abyss. Dubas took over a contender and has failed to support the core with the right team construction.
Dubas worse. Pretty close based on narrative of success

Well was it Dubas or Lou that signed Marleau to that 3x deal?
Everyone knew we needed to dump cap to sign Marner.
So how exactly was it Dubas fault? I mean I guess he could have said no and kept Marleau. let Marner sit. Fans would have rioted if that happened.
The price to move Marleau was expensive and that pick was expected to be a late one. That's the way she goes.
The Tavares contract Dubas signed him to messed it all up.

I know as much as I loved getting him I knew it was screw everything up. and it really did.
Tavares was the biggest mistake and ruined us. I wish we stayed with what we had built within and added good depth pieces in FA.
Earlier I wasn't saying Dubas was the best but he's not the worst. and I'll take him over going back to what JFJ did.
but at same time if roles were reversed I wonder what JFJ could have done. or what Dubas would have done back then.
I'm also open for change. what Leafs fan wouldn;t be after losing in the 1st round yet again

Thats fair. I'm surprised Shanny allowed Lou to sign a 38 year old to 3x6.25M

I think he allowed it to happen because that was when we had a plan to draft and develop our way to the top. We didn't really think about cap space so much and it bit us hard because they changed course in signing JT.

They weren't joking when they said they had a 5yr plan that changes everyday.

Cap space or not, signing a guy pushing 40 to a 3 yr contract for the same amount that a 60 pt player would get is absolutely bonkers

I get the feeling majority of people who voted Dubas were too young to know how bad JFJ really was

What's actually not factored in here is JFJ did his worst work when his request to rebuild was denied by ownership post lockout in 2005-06.

Faced with a league changing salary cap, and a team with no cap space and a poor farm system, he was forced to unload core pieces (Belfour, Nolan, Roberts, Nieuwendyk), trade futures for patch work "upgrades" and back fill with cheap UFA deals before exhausting the system. Now if that isn't a scary precursor for what the Dubas regime might end up doing in the next 2 seasons.

Presently we fast forward to Dubas having walked a number of his own key players to UFA status, has traded a number of future assets in win now moves and has no cap flexibility in a pandemic induced flat cap world. We've already seen the cheap UFA back fills and the churn of prospects will likely continue to facilitate short term upgrades to get the team going.

If only JFJ would've pulled the trigger on Kaberle and Steen for Pronger..... I bet he loses alot of sleep over that decision.

I know the situations are different but he still did a haunting trade like Rask for Raycroft. didnt he sign Jeff Finger to that horrible contract?
He gave out NTC like it was candy and thats the reason when we wanted to move our players and start a new chapter but couldnt because they wouldn't waive their NTC.
That put the Leafs on a darker future than anything that Dubas has done so far.
again I understand situations are different but even if JFJ wanted to rebuild but couldnt in the end he made it where rebuilding was almost impossible with what we had to work with due to those NTC

Marleau was a great mentor for our rising stars. Kyle just had to get rid of his last year for some reason and we missed the playoffs to boot. Hahahaha.
And thats worth 6.25M dollars? Since then we've signed Thornton and Spezza for league minimum to do the same thing.

To be fair, Dubas is on the cusp of turning a playoff team into a non playoff team.

We were out of the playoffs the last time we were in the Atlantic.

Great mentor? Haha...

Never won a cup
Captaincy stripped
Left the only team he played with for more money
Beat Howes record - not because his body is a rubber band. It's a testament to his playing style. The guy doesn't get hurt because he doesn't play tenacious hockey.

Marleau was an absolute terrible choice for a mentor.
