Yep I would agree but it sounds like Shanny did go to bat for him and ownership nixed it. Whatever differences Shanny and Dubas might have regarding the team, Shanny went to bat for Kyle right from the beginning. Makes sense why he would feel betrayed.
No doubt that Dubas did Shanny a dirty deed. No excuse for that.

However, from a purely dispassionate point of view, you don't leave a person in a position of authority wondering if they're going to be here tomorrow. If you've lost confidence in them, then fire them. If not, keep them locked up under contract so that you don't lose control of the situation. All it costs to do so is money.

That would be an interesting question to ask the ownership, like why, what was the reasoning? Or even better to have been a fly on the wall when those discussions were going on.

Man...the GM that's gonna be walking into this is going to have a massive storm to course through.

It's more straightforward than we think. No GM in hockey has the balls to trade Matthews and he'll very likely be extended. Shanahan himself could do this now probably.

Tavares holds his own cards and can be moved whenever he feels.

It's really between the wingers and there's still loads of time for that.

Nope, but he made the front office, coaching staff, and the players loyal to him and people all over twitter saying they're furious. You think guys like Matthews, Rielly, Tavares, and Nylander who are all known to have very strong relationships with Dubas (and Spezza) are going to just take this?

What's to stop them from demanding trades? Whats to stop high ranking members of the FO from resigning with Spezza? The more that comes out the more the organization has clearly botched the whole process.

I want our Toronto Maple Leafs players here because they love the team, the city, the fanbase, not because of personal allegiances to one manager. If they all want to leave because Kyle is gone, that is their right.

Shouldn't everyone's loyalty be to the Toronto Maple Leafs as an organization, full stop?

Shouldn't Kyle be acting in lock step with the president as one cohesive front even if there are disagreements over philosophy and healthy debate?

Shouldn't being treated with respect and given resources to excel be a hallmark of being a Toronto Maple Leaf and not personal relationships with one manager?

Shouldn't Kyle be treating Brendan with a degree of professional courtesy when throwing out a curveball because he's respectful and loyal to those above him?

Shouldn't Kyle protect his family from public hockey discussions by leaving them out of media press conferences?

The fact the organization seems to hinge on loyalty to one guy seems like the biggest red flag to me.

That's insane to me. Think of this like a regular job.

I work for Company X. I was hired by Boss Y.
Boss Y treated me extremely well, nurtured my growth, had my back, took the fall for my mistakes while working for Company X. Company X f***s over Boss Y. Why should I as an employee of Organization X have loyalty to Organization X instead of Boss Y, especially when I have options to go to Organization A - Z who didn't treat someone I care about like shit.

What's truly ironic is that last weekend, Shanahan thought this was the last thing he would have been doing today.

Dubas brought this upon himself. Ultimately, it's better for the organization in the long run that it played out this way, despite the short term turmoil.

I don't want a GM setting that tone or example for the organization.

The smart play for Shanny is trading all three (Marner, Matthews, Nylander) for high picks/top prospects and selling the fanbase on a new core. This will give the leafs another 5-7 years (hopefully longer). Last time around the leafs had next to nothing to begin with.

I think that's the worst possible scenario lol, what are the odds you think the new guys we draft will be anywhere near as good as them ? People don't want a rebuild, they want to be contenders now. I'll be f***ing pissed if that's the route we go.

Just bizarre that people are spinning this as Shanahan looking like an alpha male or whatever bullshit, instead of fickle and spiteful. Shanahan said he thought Dubas did a good job and he wanted him back. Ultimately Shanahan is the one who rescinded the offer, not Dubas. You can quibble over the circumstances all you want but how many people would really like to work for a "hardass" boss who demands unquestioning loyalty? This isn't a military, it's perfectly reasonable for people to want to consider contracts carefully and negotiate terms. If the issue is Dubas talking to the press, well, that's part of his job and comparing this to a non-public-facing role is inane.

And for the record, I wasn't particularly in favour of bringing Dubas back. He gambled big on the deadline and most of his acquisitions sucked in the playoffs, so it's disappointing to hear Shanahan say the exact opposite.
Shanahan says that they didn’t rescind any offer. Dubas and his agent wanted more in the final week.

I am not worried too much about Matthews tbh, I think he'll re-sign while asking for some questions on the direction we are headed for.

It's more the moves that are required to be made regarding Marner, Nylander, and the drafts, as well the Free-agency that's coming up.

The tasks that are needed to hear from the exit interviews will be crucial ofc again for the new Head and then on top, the search for a new coach. Just a lot of it plays a critical part in the next what 6-weeks. Sounds like a lot of all-nighters are going to be needed in a short period of time to hit those marks unless Shanahan just expects to take over until the right fit is done.

Couldn't you make the argument that Boss Y is Brendan Shanahan? Didn't he treat Dubas extremely well, nurture his growth, have your back, took the fall for your mistakes? Seems odd that all loyalties terminate at Dubas, but Dubas doesn't have to show loyalty to anyone above him...

It was a strange thing to do and he certainly didn't do it because he thought it out. That is, unless he planned it out knowing he was not being extended. Perhaps he was front-running the decision making it about him to save face.

We don't really know what is coming down from the higher ups.

Well history shows he didn't manage those signings well in the first place. On the bright side, if it's Pridham doing the negotiations, he will have every counter argument to the player agents numbers.

Trading is what I'm talking about. Actually fixing this roster. The timing is important because Marner's NMC goes into effect a month from now, which means you have one month to trade him for the best return. It is objectively an inauspicious time to change GMs. Nailing a Marner trade would have been a feat for Dubas. It will require a minor miracle from his successor.

You should be happy, change is good.

I do appreciate your optimism. Don't patronize me. This isn't my first season following a hockey team.

Company X did not f*** over Boss Y. Boss Y tried to f*** over Company X. Hate to have an employee who has more allegiance to Boss Y than the Company X who pays your salary and allowed you to grow.

Over-reaction here and people piling on just cos they wanna see the Leafs fail.

Imo I'm fine with it and I'd be happier once Shanahan is gone too.
