kinda what I wanted to ask
I like dubas but I don’t think his vision of a nhl team is working, negotiation tactics also weak but any sense that if this year is a failure then he’s is out?
If so does shanahan not follow also?
And what is a failure for this team because looking at this division making the playoffs doesn’t seem to be too difficult this year
If his vision of a NHL team is off, and he isn’t good a negotiating contracts what exactly is there to like about him being GM?

Continues to draft same type of players, seems to only have contacts with a certain OHL team, guys a one trick pony on so many levels.......

If Matty is out tonight, we are going to see just how thin we are up front. Leaf fans denying that that the more balanced Habs team were a match for the mighty Leafs are quickly getting a reality check.

He’s good at pandering to the media. Calling them by name is a nice touch but my favourite was throwing Matthews under the bus after his charges with “we’re really disappointed he didn’t tell us” lines when most would feed the “dealing with it in house” lines to protect their brother. Their 21 year old franchise player wasn’t embarrassed enough, so that extra gas on the fire for the media was a nice touch by Dube. In fairness, I guess it’s hard to understand a team concept when you haven’t even been on a team since minor hockey.

I also liked when someone on Twitter accused Morgan Rielly of using a homophobic slur. Although most of us knew immediately that isn’t Morgan Rielly’s character, Dubas had him come back to the rink 2-3 hours post game to hold court for media looking to make his alleged comment into a headline.. and again, this was for something someone said on Twitter. Shockingly, it turned out to be bull shit. Who would have known?

On the bright side, it only took 2 wasted years for him to realize the very basic stuff like not enough toughness, not hard to play against, lacking character, lacking leadership, can’t defend well enough etc etc.. Basically all the stuff his ‘haters’ had been saying, he came out and acknowledged in the offseason. That’s a big step for him. Recognizing theres an art to team building and actually very little of it is about science and numbers.

Still don’t like the bottom 6 and don’t love the d core but at least this is a team that looks like it should win a round. Not cup contenders for my money, but at least take advantage of the COVID division and get past the first round.

If they don’t get past the first round I’m not sure how they’d justify keeping Dubas or Shanahan.

What a pile of nonsense. Seems like you really hate the guy and that's stopping you from thinking straight.

Which part is nonsense?

Everything I mentioned actually happened, and is easily verifiable?

I couldn’t hate someone I don’t know. I’m sure he’s a swell guy but I don’t like his work as a GM. That’s what we’re measuring, right?

Facts are facts but the way you spin the facts makes your bias (if hatred is too strong word) clear as can be.

There was good reason to be disappointed in Matthews, not saying so would have been weird. And the thing with Rielly was normal too, doing that sort of PR is part of being a Maple Leaf.

Saying we're not tough to play against is a joke, Boston took us two years in a row but if you think it was easy for them then you're living in a fantasy world.

The teams he managed in the past had plenty of toughness, you're stuck in a false narrative.

I’m not saying they shouldn’t have been disappointed, but what does telling the media do? Other than turn up the heat a little more?

I disagree with Rielly, too. It’s completely ridiculous that someone on Twitter can make baseless accusations about someone with Morgan’s character, and he could actually have to come answer for it 2-3 hours after the game... to a group of media members looking to make him a headline.

That’s insane.

They needed to get tougher to play against and Dubas said it himself in the offseason. Many fans have been saying it for years.

All of this happened, exactly like I explained it?

What he should have done:
Re; Matthews - “It’s a matter we’ll deal with internally, no further comment”
Re; Rielly - “We’re aware of the accusations from someone on Twitter and will look to find out facts in the matter before we make any decisions on how to proceed”

Simple. Protect your guys. Media is tough enough, especially in Toronto.

Matthews - it didn't turn up the heat at all to say what was understandable and expected.

Rielly - the sooner you address the situation the better, precisely because this is Toronto. It was a rare occasion, not like this happens on a regular basis.

Every team wants to get tougher to play against, that doesn't mean they're not tough to play against as it is, it's just a matter of degree.

Dubas protects everyone, look no further then the season end pressers where he takes the blame for things that are so obviously not his fault. To say he doesn't protect his guys is just ... pretty far out there IMHO.

I disagree. Matthews hadn’t spoken at that point, adding in the “didn’t tell your employer” angle only gave more ammo to dirtbags like Steve Simmons who love to jump on stories like that.

Personally, I’m tearing Matthews a new one in private but defending and deflecting to the media. He’s a young, rich athlete who did something dumb when he was drunk. That’s a family matter, not for public consumption.

Re; Rielly - I’m not saying not to address it, but calling him back to the rink to face the media with absolutely nothing factual isn’t protecting your guy.

The 3rd paragraph I agree with. Their speed and skill can be a nightmare, but the depth and balance of the roster wasn’t really there. Many had said it, he finally came out and acknowledged it. I give him credit, even if he did waste two years before figuring out some pretty basic stuff... But you can see a different philosophy with some of his adds this year so he deserves credit for acknowledging his initial philosophy wasn’t going to work.

I’m definitely not a fan, but it’s only fair to give him credit when he deserves it. Many in those positions will fall on their sword before admitting mistakes or changing approach. Old pal Mike Babcock is a recent example of this.

Fair enough. I don't agree with all this but at least I can see where you're coming from and respect your opinion.

You as well.

The few posts before the initial one you quoted were asking what he’s good at. My response was pandering to the media and provided some examples.

In all sincerity, he deserves the most credit for acknowledging the flaws in his philosophy and attempting to fix them. Most fans don’t care who makes those decisions as long as they’re on the right path. He wasn’t, he admitted it, and now hopefully he’s turned the necessary corner to build this team into a true contender. Definitely still a work in progress but some positive signs point to a better way of thinking this year. That’s good to see.

The fact that he prefers skill to burkies tough teams
He makes things make sense when he does interviews but the results haven’t been there

Was listening to a bit of Lou on Sirius. He believes that building a team is like building an orchestra. Did not listen to all of it but the way I see it we have too many flutes and piccolos and not enough chellos and basses. LOL.

Id be calling columbus about dubois to see what it would cost. You can then shift tavares to wing or dubois to wing. Always inquire about good players.

Plus we could shed off some expensive contracts (marner or nylander). We could even get more than dubois in a deal such as one of their defenceman.

Not saying do it but dubas should be calling because he is a good player and big and strong. Can play center if needed. Also we could shed some money to open up our cap situation (mostly with marner contract).
