So it looks like Kucherov is signing.

I guess that means we're gonna have to trade Johnson. ;)

Reading that makes me think the salary will be higher than expected or the term will be funky (really short or really long?)

Yeah. He either signed for the mother lode, or for peanuts. Relative to his market value (6.5-7?).

If TB can bridge at like 6, that's a genius deal. To get Kucherov to bridge when he could get a huge payday in the KHL for a year pretty much puts all the risk on Kucherov.

If TB pays him 6 (probably below his value) and he doesn't produce as he has (unlikely), then TB doesn't put as much money on the table come the end of the deal. If he continues on his track, he'll get a 2-3 mil raise in a couple of years when Bishop, Callahan and Flip are all off the books.

Normally I'd hate these deals but in Tampas situation 3 year deal would be close to perfect.

Hedman- Stamkos longterm contracts this season,
Johnson, Palat, Drouin next offseason, Kucherovs bridge deal should help a bit,
few contracts go off the books, breath, focus on Kucherov the next offseason and sign him to longterm contract.

With Kucherov getting a bridge deal, you also bridge Drouin next season, and in 3 to 4 years will have contracts falling off "naturally", won't have to move all these guys, maybe just one or two guys now like Bishop and Filppula, and if it gets tight again then maybe Garrison.

Drouin's not going to be bridged unless he has a mediocre season. If he has the sort of year I expect him to have he'll be a prime offer sheet candidate and we'll have to pay him to keep him. Unlike the Triplets he's not loyal to Tampa and will jump to any team willing to offer him a bigger contract; given our cap situation and his talent somebody will make a play at him.

Why would you give a player a long term contract north of 6 million for one strong season? It will be one full season. Even if it's a great season, will only be one under his belt. Drouin has already shown his other face like you said he is not loyal, and he has yet to play a full season in the NHL, and you want to throw him this huge contract? It's great that he has made amends with the team, coach, and GM but he still has ways to go before getting a large contract.

Drouin's teen years seems to be clearly over. He's behaved like a true pro and a mature person since coming back. If he wants to win, I have no doubt he'll highly consider staying with Tampa, even on a bridge deal.

You keep pushing the "one strong season" argument but a) his troubles with injuries and attitude aside he performed quite well offensively last season even while playing predominantly with fourth-liners, and b) it's all about trend and future projection. You don't want to pay him next summer because he's only had (presumably) one great season, but if I'm another team I see what he did in the playoffs and (again, presumably) this upcoming season and that's what I anticipate his production to be going forward; given Tampa's cap situation and Drouin's known lack of loyalty I see an opportunity to grab an elite forward (or at least worsen Tampa's cap troubles) by offer sheeting him for what his value will be going forward as opposed to looking back. And unlike Kucherov we all know Drouin will sign such an offer sheet rather than take less on a bridge deal to help the team.

Its just over because he actually has a spot on the team. Said alot about him when he became the biggest crybaby in America just because he had to go to the AHL for a short time.
