Yeah but by June 2019 the NTC will have kicked in already, no?

We just saw Hammer traded from a perennial cup contender to Arizona despite a NMC-NTC. For guys like him 90% of the time these things can be easily worked around. If Russell's choice is to play or ride the pine he will take the trade. All the NTC does is limits the return a little.

A bit too much but is what it is, a true top 4 player that can play the right side or left.

Today's game is heavily in favour of defenceman that can move the puck and keep possession going. Russel isn't that. If we want to sit back and be defending for 20 minutes every time that Russel is on the ice then that is perfect. Look at Anaheim D core, majority puck movers that can keep possession going. Those are the kind of defenceman you want, not a smaller Staios.

As long as the puck stays out of the net when he's on the ice he's doing his job. So far the puck has consistently gone into the oppositions net more often than ours while he's out there.

Im in favor of this deal again. The two first years have no NTC. We can trade him next summer with little effort if we wish

Term sucks. What's the structure? Front loaded?

Yes front loaded.
5 (1M Bonus paid the 1st Year)
4.5
4
2.5 (1M Bonus paid the 4th Year)

This is very good because in the 4th year if we need to dump him, he's only getting paid 1.5M that year so any team needing a dman for cheap dollars will take him no problem.

And if in the very likely event we want to trade him somewhere he doesn't want to go?

You could trade him in the summer of 2019 after the 2nd season before July 2019. 2 years left on his contract and his NTC wouldn't be kicked in yet.

Every player is movable without a NTC. At worst we have to send a pick along with him. Realistically, there will be someone out there who wants him imo

You'd think that but there are plenty of teams that are stuck with their cap anchors and the Coyotes look like they're tired of being a team that takes on those anchors.

I know the structures are different but we're still stuck with Mark Fayne and Benoit Pouliot.

I assume the local media who are so fervently defending the oilers on this will be as equally critical if/when this contract goes bad?

We aren't motivated enough to move those players. The cap only becomes truly important starting in the 2018-19 season. Pouliot is still useful to us in the meantime. Fayne doesn't even play, so it's not really the same thing as Russell.

But even with Fayne, if we really wanted to move him we could. It would just cost us to do so, and we'd rather wait it out

How, exactly? Chiarelli couldn't wait to get arguably our best winger (and certainly our best right winger) out the door but we should keep a guy who scored far less than Eberle?
