I know, I explained that things could have changed had the Senators cashed in their chances.
I think it's worth saying that it's highly unlikely you're going to get a lot of people believing in these moral victories and hypothetical if-this-bounce-had-gone-our-way-we-could-have-won scenarios. Ultimately, results will matter. The preseason does not matter but soon the games will and there will be no room for any of this "things would have been totally different if not for these 3 things!" statements as we talk about losses piling up in the early parts of the season.

Full blown panic here. I don't get it. They've had a relatively decent pre-season and it doesn't really matter in the end. Last year Korpse was lights out in pre-season, then immediately stunk it up once the games mattered, now people want to quote what he's doing in Boston pre-season as if we should miss him. Lunacy. We didn't have our new, real starting goaltender in net last night and didn't lose by much. Also still missing Zub who brings balance to the D. They need to put it together and Forsberg needs to hold it together for 20-25 games or gtfo, but I'm not going to panic without Ullmark in net, he's the biggest positive change they made in the offseason, by far.

this team just has to start hot.

sick of the season being over after a month.
That would be nice but I am not expecting "hot". If they are at 50% after 20 games, I would be surprised.

Forsberg will be gone at the end of the season.

I don't disagree, but it's pre-season and we're just employing a new system and Mr Greig missed a wide open chance. They all need their timing back etc etc etc

Also, it's incredible that Crosby is out there still being the best player on the ice. The LeBron James of hockey at this point with how he's playing in to the twilight of his career.

Fortunately, its still the preseason, so there’s still lots of runway left to take off. Just wanted to mention that as who knows how people might react to posts. Like I’ve said, maybe it will take time for the systems Green is deploying to sink in and perhaps they will find another gear. Having said that, Pittsburgh is a team that the Senators might be competing with for a wild card spot, so maybe there’s a little extra attention & focus on this game while still understanding its preseason and there were no points lost.

So the system was working it looked like they ran out of gas to excecute it. Which I guess can be looked at two ways, its not sustainable or they dont know how to do it efficiently. I know how the vocal people will look at it. I personally see it as something they have to work at and work on to get through, its gonna take some time but the early results to me were promising.

But I will say this, the one big difference between pre season and regular season is the result doesnt matter. Yeah in the regular season you just want to make sure you get the 2 points thats all that matters, if you get out played but win so be it. In a preseason game id rather be the better team in the game than get the win. The sens were faster and had more chances than Pitt. They lost the game due to a combination of a bad goal against, a lucky goal against and a missed open net. However they were the better team. I will take the process over the result in pre season.

LOL. The regular season REALLY needs to start. People are panicking about a meaningless preseason game.

Green wasn't my first choice but even preseason it's pretty clear he's a significant upgrade on who we had running the show each of the previous five camps.

Now if we start the way have all the other years I'll be right there with my concern. And anger.

Who exactly is panicking? And how have you seen so much of these alleged reactions that you've formed such a strong opinion about it?

Yes, the preseason is meaningless. It still doesn't change the fact that the team lost 5-2. It's really bizarre to have lived through the context of many many losing seasons where the team gets off to a slow start and not understand that people are feeling nervous that this type of result could be an indicator of things to come.

There were also some tap in goals from a player (e.g., Crosby) alone at the side of the net. I think some will blame it on the goalie as per usual. I do think Forsberg had one stinky goal that he let in, so we would have only lost 4 - 2 then. It's still a loss regardless. But the superficial and lazy analysis from some will focus on a single source of blame, namely the goalie.
Crosby is obviously an exceptional player who can and has scored a lot of goals and should be covered closely. Too bad the F and/or D who should have been covering him did not do so.

We spend so much time discussing who is missing and optimal lines but it seems like you will get about 5 games a year where you can select from the complete roster.

Be honest, you would be nervous if the Sens ran the table in pre-season.

The team is full of question marks regardless of how they look or play in pre-season.

But that's always been the issue. Same thing with Jacques Martin... The system wasn't the issue, but the players not being able to consistently apply it. They would look good for bits and people would say "see the system works" but then they would not play well for periods and rack up a few Ls and people would make excuses...and then we win some and people point to it as what are team is capable of and gets enthusiastic...and then we lose more games and hear more excuses.

You're right that we need to let it play out. I'm just saying so far, we saw the team show up for a part of the game and looked good...and then we saw them not look so good, and lose the game. That reminds me a lot of last year. We looked amazing for many portions of many games, but we couldn't put it down for 60 mins to get the W. It's just preseason, so it doesn't mean anything. I'm just looking for signs.

So far, showing up for portions of the game and looking like world beaters for a few mins, and then also looking bad for portions of the game and losing the game is par for the course from last year. Same shit, different day.

So, sure, this coach will bring a different style, and we will see it more and more over the next ~30 or some games like you mention, for sure...

But if the team still can't play consistently for 60 mins, game after game, we're probably going to lose our fair share of games, and be on the outside looking in yet again.
Some of the players have adopted behaviours on the ice that are not sound defensively because of prior coaching. Hopefully the new coaching staff will put greater emphasis on playing a sound defensive game and cure them of their laziness. It will take some time. I hope this coaching staff can see the deficiencies and teach them how to play better in all 3 zones.

if this was written earlier, my apologies.

Many of Pitt's better players were playing game 1 of the pre-season.

5-2 for Pitt.

A tad troubling.
Certainly not a reason to suggest "optimism" for the Ottawa Senators; there is no need to "panic". "A tad troubling" will do nicely!

Game was lost in the 2nd when Ottawa was all over them and couldn't capitalize. Could easily have been 4-1, should have been 3-1 minimum. Instead you give a team with good firepower a second life.

The new additions of Jensen and Perron were both good imo. Perron was buzzing all night and still has excellent skills
I don't think either of them were "excellent"; however, they were not as bad as I thought they might be. Jensen seems to be competent as a defensive defenseman. Perron was OK.

It might be sooner than that now that we have brought in Cole Ceci.
