I bet the US goalies will be Quick and Schneider, Miller hasn't exactly shown much since Vancouver. Marty's not going to be selected to Canada with Crawford and Luongo both ahead of him.

Devils on Olympic teams (my prediction):

Elias (Czech Republic-C)
Schneider (USA)
Zidlicky (Czech Republic)
Larsson (Sweden)
Zubrus (Lithuania-C)
Greene (USA)
Loktionov (Russia)
Fayne (USA)
Ryder (Canada)
Carter (USA)
Carter and Fayne won't make USA. Greene is a longshot. Larsson is a maybe for Sweden.

Ryder zero chance. Loktionov zero chance.

Yup there's much better options for team USA than some of those guys. Carter was just playing on the USA worlds team because there wasn't as much talent due to all 16 playoff teams still playing because of the late finish.

Greene even got snubbed by that team for some reason, and there were defensemen not as good as him in the lineup.

IDK about Olympics yet. To far away atm.
But I fully intend to put good chunk of money aside for September, 24th. Gonna pay few rounds for the boys, when they emerge from the locker room. After I've enjoyed watching them plaster him good at least few times  Welcome to Zagreb, Kovy

I think it's possible Schneider is number 3, but Anderson will probably be number 2. Or Miller just because of last tournament, even though he isn't as good as Schneider, Anderson, or Howard anymore.

the CBA ran out lol, that's like saying the union broke his contract. Sounds ridiculous because that is ridiculous.

buyouts are a breach of contract? They pay the player to not play, even if you claim a marginal amount of the promised contract, it still pays. Where do we get the team get compensation for the player to break the contract? The answer is nowhere, until they make the new team pay with compensation, or force the player to play with a gun - which isn't possible so the former will suffice.

I don't think that is how a buyout works. The player gets their money instantly and the caphit is spread out over time. So I think you're making things up.

It is exactly how the buyout works.

"As part of the buyout, the Flyers will pay Bryzgalov $1.643 million per year for the next 14 years to not play for them. He will no longer count against their salary cap."

Should be noted that Illya signed a contract with his owner to get 51 million over 9 years. He is only going to get 36.252 million over 16 years.

All valid reasons. Except he waived the right to pursue those reasons when he signed a 15 year contract. All things he should have considered 3 years ago when UFA and acted appropriately whether that mean going to the KHL then or signing a shorter term contract. There's no excuses for getting yourself into a commitment you later regret.

He signed his 15 year contract before the last lockout occurred. Which should never had happened. Kovy didn't do anything illegal. He had enough with the NHL and decided to join another league in his home country.

in the middle of his contract. he broke his contract and abandoned his team in the middle of a 15 year deal that he essentially demanded. Lou's fault for complying though.

Lockout sucks but no one else is rushing back to russia because of it, poor excuse.

Not only is a buyout explicitly described in the CBA that ALL players agree to before playing in the NHL, but you're foolish if you think a player doesn't benefit from being bought out. Free money while they can pursue another contract...

Plus.. if the players were so against the buyouts, they would have instructed their legal representatives to negotiate in a different fashion during the CBA negotiations.

Who said he did? Do you not understand something can be wrong yet not illegal?

And that's the point. He signed his 15 year contract BEFORE the last lockout occurred. If he was worried about the lockout happening/changing things.. he should have signed a contract that didn't go beyond the expiring CBA. There's no one to blame for the lack of foresight other than Kovalchuk himself.

A player demands the most he can get. Marty is like one of the few players in any sport that actually will take less than he could get to help the team.

You understand that we only paid Kovy 6 million the first two seasons right? If he knew this was coming he would have just ask for all the money upfront. But his contract was structured to benefit the team and he didn't sign it with the knowledge he could leave by year 4. The CBA changed and Kovy had every right to leave his contract.

If the Devils didn't agree to terminate his contract, what 17 did actually would be illegal.

It's only legal because the Devils chose to allow it.

Not all the players agreed to the CBA. They don't need 100% to vote yes.

And Ilya buy out is actually pretty bad financially for him. He isn't consider to be as good as he was when he signed it and when you consider time value of money he got screwed.

That isn't true either. The worse that would have happened was the IHF would have not allowed Kovy to play in the world championships/olympics.

Actually yes, he did.

He broke a legally binding contract which is covered under both labor and contract law. If you really want to reach, you can also make a case for some tort law extending from his statements about the Devils club, but that's nitpicking (a lawyer's dream).

Lucky for him Lou and the NHL voided the contract and ended any chance for action to be taken against him but nonetheless, he broke the law. The only thing he didn't break was criminal law.

Not to be alarmist here and you should know (if you don't already) that Russian media is generally full of s**t. But a Czech KHL team is making whispers of getting a few of their players out of NJ under the same sort of scenario that Kovi used. One KHL course (not identified said there could be more this summer, and next summer to follow Kovi's lead.

George Zimmerman apparently didn't do anything illegal either.

Listen, technically he wasn't in breach of contract. TECHNICALLY everything he did was kosher... but this all stems from the Devils decision to let him do it. If the Devils wanted to block him then this would be a gigantic ordeal. Lou has a soft spot for players and if Kovy mentioned the word FAMILY, then Lou will do whatever it takes to make Kovy happy.

The simple fact is that we all wish he did this in 2010 and saved us fans the trouble. The penalties that the team got, the cap situation with Rolston, Arnott, Langenbrunner, and others in 2010 was tough... we were the laughing stock of the league... we kind of are again.. It was really only worth it in 2012 going to the finals.

I think myself and many others just think that he just didn't wake up one morning and panic and think he's got to get out. He's mad about escrow and the money taken out of his contract. The Devils happened to be the only team willing to meet his ridiculous contract demands.... and while he was over in Russia those guys told him how they were willing to pay and it all added up and he just ran out. If he did it in 2010, no one cares. The fact that the team and fans went through so much to keep him here... it hurts.

And why exactly would they have done that? BECAUSE IT WAS ILLEGAL.

The NHL and KHL have a transfer agreement not to poach each others players without buyouts. 17 wouldn't have been allowed to play in the KHL without the Devils permission whether you want to accept that or not. That's what the legally binding contract says. I don't know what kind of court would oversee that but there would be complicated lawsuits all over the place if they allowed him to play.

What? Elias and Zidlicky just re signed with the Devils. Zidlicky waited 5 days on the market for the Devils to give him a contract.

Who else would wanna go there anyway? Who else on our team would wanna play in the Krappy Hockey League?

Clowe, Zajac, Ryder, you think any of those guys wanna go there? Henrique? Schneider?

If Elias or Zidlicky wanted to go there, they could have signed there two weeks ago.

Nope. A player can retire whenever he wants. If the team says no - the player is suspended by the league. There is nothing Devils/NHL can do to Kovy or any player who calls it quits. It is actually written in the contract that the player and team signs.

There's a huge difference between a player retiring and not playing anymore like Rafalski, and a player retiring and playing in a different league immediately after.

Nice try though.
