Being a Kings fan (especially after beating The Devils in the SCF), this **** is straight off the hook entertaining unfolding of events.

Some of you seem to want to make excuses for this guy. It seems like people have been making excuses for him for a long time. His plan was clear: Take all the money in that front loaded contract then bail out.

For those of you saying that's what anyone would do, do me a favor and stop speaking on my behalf. I would ABSOLUTELY not do anything like this. Sometimes your word and your honor is all you really have and in this department Kovalchuck is at a negative balance.

Loophole Lou is at it again, heh.

I DO feel bad for a few Devils fans. There are some lurking here and elsewhere that are true, time-honored fans and knowledgeable about hockey in general.

The rest of them that were lording this signing over us and STILL think the only reason they lost in the finals was because Scuderi ate the shelf on the dashers...well, this is just gorgeous

From what I'm reading, the only significant impact this will have on the Devils is losing a great winger. I guess the cap hit won't be much of anything? They still lose their 1st, but that was going to happen Kovy or no Kovy.

They just went from MAYBE slipping in to the playoffs to throwing their name in to the draft lottery.

A teams superstar just quit on them, and did it a week after free agency so they can't even try to replace him without giving up assets. That's a total ***** move by Kovy

Puck Daddy reports he'll earn $20M per year in St. Petersburg. Not a difficult decision.

[Edit]Check that. PD reports some other dude speculates Kovalchuk could earn $15-20 MM per year. Still an easy decision.

Exactly. Except that's not at all what happened, if you look at the contract. He was just getting to the juicy part of the contract. Let's not forget that part.

I'll revise:Took all that money in the front loaded contract and bailed before he was bought out.

Whatever. Not a fan. Glad he's out of the league.

Don't care if you are fan or not but he was in the prime money making years is my point. In fact in 2 of the 3 seasons he made LESS than his already low cap hit was. In all he made less 20 million on a deal that was worth 100 million dollars. That's not taking the money and running. If he had done this after 16-17 to 19-20 then I could see that argument.

However he is probably getting better paid in KHL. That can be argument he follows the money, but again would you not do the same? Are you so attached to your particular work place that you take way less money?

Man the Devils board is pure magic right now.

Our fan base would be the same, so it's hard to laugh at them.

Kovalchuk is a punk. Plain and simple. You don't sign a contract and then announce "retirement" a few years later and then go play in the KHL. I shake my head at him and what he did to the Devils franchise. A respectable player doesn't do that.
