I think the main risk involving this deal is if he has some kind of physical limitation as a reason why he's such a bad skater. That's really the only knock on him. If he was even an average skater, he'd be a 2C right now. As a very bad skater he's still a good bottom 6 player so it's not that risky of a deal.

he's a glider. lacks acceleration and quick burst. Younger version of Jordo but he can improve on these issues. He's with the right team for this.

Man that guy has tried to shit all over KK every time he comes up and he keeps shifting the goalposts on the reasons. Now he's going around talking about this awful $5m AAV contract a few months after he specifically said it would be impossible to extend him for less than $6.5m because of his QO. The guy is an absolute clown and absolutely deserves to be mocked as one.

I think this slots much more as a 3C after Staal's contract is up and he re-signs for a smaller number, probably as a 4C like RBA ended his career. Or you think of Staal on a defensive 2nd line and Kotkaniemi on an offensive 3rd line next season.

And as I pointed out on the main board, the worst-case scenario here is that as late as 2026, you can buy him out at 1/3 value because he's still under 26. That means a buyout penalty for 8 years of $803,333.

I think Dundon can handle that if Kotkaniemi flops.

Just think… in the year 2030, Kotkaniemi will be making 20% less than Staal made in 2013.

Now, chances are he never becomes a prime Jordan Staal. But still, he would have to basically be a 4th liner for this not to be a value contract in its later stages.

this is certainly a gamble of a contract, but we gave ourselves 3 years after this one to evaluate him before his NTC comes into effect and that was shrewd by the borg. visibly, he's damaged goods. there are teams that have to be cognizant of how much weight their fanbase puts on the shoulders of draft picks made this high and he probably isn't the right personality for Montreal. but he's just so very young and we often forget that. he's younger than Jack Drury and our attitude about his tangible production is a bit ambivalent with the understanding that he's getting valuable experience. i think the news around him since being drafted has been too much and he needs an offseason to develop in the dark so that he can feel like the eyes of the hockey world aren't upon him. the immensity of the offer sheet situation ran right into the relative disappointment of the progression made during his ELC. in all cases, trying to prove his worthiness for factors outside of his control instead of letting the game come to him naturally. this contract will give him the freedom to move on from that pressure, because his salary will not be tied to his production and as long as he has the approval of the coaching for his play, it won't be mentioned a lot at this number that he's not meeting expectations.

what i am looking for in KK is a comfort level with the puck that he doesn't have right now. he has the talent to create extra time with the puck, but he's very risk averse as relative to his talent and that is probably related to an emphasis on mistake free hockey that has dampened his creativity. hopefully, he can get lost this offseason and as the articles and hot takes about him, his draft position, and his offer sheet signing fade into the background he will start to emerge into playing more naturally and up to his skill.

Really happy for KK to be able to settle into a great market for the next 8 years. Very happy for the Canes that we locked him up at such a reasonable rate.

If the last 10 months or so have taught me anything, its that Montreal might be the single most toxic market in the league. Between their obsession with QC down to targeted media hit jobs against other franchisees down to their toxic obsession with cheering for Kotkaniemi to fail because of a twitter beef, its pathetic. There's been no more deserving a market to fall as flat on its face as they did this season.

I think it's blown out of proportion. Obviously markets like Montreal/Toronto are much different than Raleigh or the Florida teams, etc. and media/fans can treat the teams/sport a bit differently but every fanbase has people like this and even if it varies a bit it's always a small percentage of the fanbase. For example, Eagles fans have a terrible reputation, but I lived in Philly for a while and never had any issues with Eagles fans despite going to games there as an opposing fan, playful trash talking, etc.

Also, I'm not on social media at all, but my understanding of it suggests to me that is likely where your issue lies. Not with Habs fans but with people engaging in that type of behavior on social media in general.

That may be true in a some places but the Cleveland media is brutal on the Browns. They have tried to bash incoming coaches at their introductory pressers before. A prime example is Rich Passan raked Eric Mangini over the coals at his intro and Tony Grossi got confrontational with Gregg Williams at his, to the point that before Grossi introduced himself after he asked his first question Gregg replied "You must be Tony" than proceeded to ignore him the rest of the presser.

I would imagine the media in Montreal and Toronto are the same. It sure makes it hard to turn something around when the press is pushing everything negative about the team 24/7. Compare that to the Raleigh and Canes media who come off as fans of the team first and reporters second. Not saying they dont call out the team for mistakes but they give them a hell of a lot more rope than other markets do.

That's not a sauna, Jesperi.

That's an enclosed porch in NC in August.

If they ever put a team in Houston, we are screwed. That place is an outdoor sauna 9 months out of the year...for free. The other three months it is under water.
Gentlemen, not that I don't appreciate the joke, but a sauna is a sauna and some hot sweatly place, most often, is not a sauna. A First Nations sweat lodge might be a honorary sauna.

When the Finnish peacekeepers went to Suez back in the day, the first thing they did was build a sauna for themselves. Doubtlessly they got some slow looks, but that's how we roll.
