My cap runneth over
It's almost that time. Jasperi Kotkaniemi can sign an extension with the Hurricanes in January. Will he? If so, what will he get?
Earning his 6.1 mil contract. How has he been for the Canes anyway?
Kotkaniemi still doesn’t have much leverage. The QO doesn’t or wont handcuff the Canes. 1st and 3rd for a one year rental is a gamble for any team but it happens. I doubt a team is paying Kotkaniemi 5 x 5 on the open market. His value is still potential production not expected production. Knowing that, the Canes probably don’t do that either.5 years 5 mills makes sense for both. Both take the risk of over/underpaid. Maybe 4/4 if Canes has done a great job of committing him to the city.
That, or just another year of the same contract..
No reason for Kotkaniemi to take less without term. Canes gave his agent the leverage.
He started off extremely slow when he played wing. Much better production when finally moved back to C. He’d probably be best to play it out to to get a better gage of his production. It's almost that time. Jasperi Kotkaniemi can sign an extension with the Hurricanes in January. Will he? Carolina is tops in the NHL in win %. The Habs are second to last in the same category. And you gave away the draft pick to get Dvorak, who isn’t exactly lighting it up in Montreal.Earning his 6.1 mil contract.

But they have Kotkaniemi and he’s likely going to be on a deep playoff run this season.Carolina couldve had Reaves instead of kotkaniemi and still be in the top of standings.

Where as Dvorak will be golfing a lot in late April the next few years.
And the Habs will be watching Arizona walk to the podium to use the KK 1st rounder. That doesnt matter though. The habs would be golfing in april even if they kept kotkaniemi.

big winners here seem to be KK and Arizona. Carolina too if they have a deep playoff run.
Losers here. Habs and MB.
How is that relevant? It was a dumb move by the Canes. He isn't worth $6M in cap space. But they have Kotkaniemi and he’s likely going to be on a deep playoff run this season.

And MB doesn’t have a job.

KK is scoring at 2.08 p/60 at 5v5. That's actually 1st line productivity.Well no.
Arizona will be getting a much later 1st round pick than they were expecting. They couldve gotten a better 1st round pick had they kept dvorak and traded him later.
Carolina is paying 6.1 M to a player for 3rd line production.
There is no winner in this trade other than KK.
Anytime you have a player that's not playing up to his contract it's bad. That 6M could've been used for much more, same with the assets to get him.As has been explained ad nauseam, Kotkaniemi’s cap hit is largely irrelevant to the Canes. Carolina had a unique cap situation of a lot of space and nothing to spend it on for just 1 year (raises for Necas and DeAngelo or an equivalent coming in 22-23). It’s not going to prevent the team from adding at the deadline, if it wants to.
The move should be judged by the return. Up to this point, it’s been a mild overpay. As much as some want Carolina to take a major L here, it’s not going to happen. It was a modest risk gamble to begin with.

But if he doesn’t get the QO he’s free to negotiate with whatever team he wants. Playing better as a C vs the wing. So, making sure he gets played at C probably should be a priority for him in the next contract.Kotkaniemi still doesn’t have much leverage. it may be 4x4 that would take him to UFA. Gives Canes value and Kotkaniemi flexibility for his next deal.

Come on, include term in the poll. And with the narrow range of salary options, there's really no way to distinguish between a bridge and a longer term deal.
