Ukraine isn't much worse than Austria/Kazakhstan/Slovenia. Any team can beat the other on a good day. Korea has beaten Hungary before, who in turn beat Kazakhstan. That doesn't make Korea better than Kazakhstan. Nor does Korea's loss to Ukraine mean much either.

I how many steps we would need to take to show Korea>Canada/Russia/USA/Sweden/Finland/Czech.

People seem to forget that Miracles do happen; especially at the Olympics. Also, remember that it is a tournament meant for AMATEURS! I for one would not mind seeing a bunch of Spengler Cup guys at the Olympics representing Canada; are people going to watch snowboarding instead? Maybe, but who cares? The Olympics is the Olympics; it is about participation. I laugh at anyone who says "They're going to get killed." I hope they come out of the gate and knock someone off, it may not lead to a future team but it gives them a sense of pride! For those of you who need a refresher, Two words for you: Lake Placid.

hardly amateurs...

Even without NHL players, they will be lucky to win a game.
Lucky? There is no way they would even come close to winning a game against players mixed from KHL, SHL, HockeyAllsvenskan, Liiga, DEL, NLA, possibly Extraliga or EBEL. I won't even think about NHL, but they would be probably told to not embarrass them so much. I'm definitely happy for them, they deserve it.

Chocking news; NHL isnt the only hockey leauge that have to pay their players...

So Canada will send a combined Canada East and Canada West team from the CJHL? Following the NCAA rules, that is the top level of purely amateur hockey in Canada. Major Junior players are pro, thus anyone who played Major Junior is also a pro, so CIS and Allan Cup teams are full of professional players.

Also, if we were to invoke amateur rules for hockey, the IOC would have to take a step back and invoke amateur rules for all sports. This would mean that none of Canada's other winter athletes could compete as they are paid through the Own The Podium program. It would mean that professional basketball players could not play in the Summer Games. Any elite track athlete would be banned, as they compete in the IAAF Diamond League for money etc. etc.

If what you mean is that this tournament is meant for non-NHL players like the years between 1980 and 1994 were, then you have a case. But in Canada's case, I wouldn't send the Spengler Cup team, that team is built largely out of the Swiss NLA. I would send the top Canadians out of all non-NHL leagues (I also assume it would mean no NHLPA members could go, so any player in the AHL/ECHL on a NHL contract would be forbidden to play.) So you send a mix of the top players from the KHL, SHL, Liiga, AHL, ECHL etc. yes some NLA players would probably make Team Canada, but not in the large quantities that they do for the Spengler Cup.

Just as a side note, for European fans reading this, when do European players start getting paid? I'm assuming the majority of World Juniors players are getting paid, even if they are playing J20 or MHL etc.

In Finland they're not getting paid if they play only in juniors, but those ones who play in Liiga they get paid. Last year it was speculated that 17-year-old Aleksi Saarela was to be paid more than 100000€ for 2013-2014 season.

Usually good Liiga players of that age get maybe ~30-50k€. I don't know how much Saarela actually got, but definitely juniors playing in Liiga get paid and they are professionals in that sense.

It would be fair to say that they would be lucky to not get blown out every single game.

When Latvia met Korea the last time we beat them 32:0. They have improved, I'll give you that, BUT if they're seeded last, it means that they're going to face teams ranked 1st, 6th and 7th in the world rankings (as of now: Sweden, USA, Switzerland) in the group stage and, obviously, the highest-seeded team in the qualification play-offs (Russia in Sochi).

So most likely they WILL NOT face any 2nd tier nations.

They will get absolutely pummeled out there.

A player has to play 4 seasons on a Korean team to be eligible for naturalization, as far as I know.

IIHF recently changed it to two seasons, he already played some unsanctioned international matches for Korea during the international break.

Unless they let Korea naturalize a bunch of Canadians with Korean heritage I worry for the safety of these players. This isn't going to be like the US in cricket where they just lose by an embarrassingly large margin. Guys are going to get hurt being run over by players like Ovechkin Backes or Perry

Yea right they're not going to let Canada, USA, Russia, Finland, Sweden etc anywhere near Korea.... Korea will play in a different pool.

Korea would easily get beat 20/30-0 against any of the aforementioned teams.

Well, that's ridiculous. :shakehead

Although it feels like cheating, it will definitely help them to avoid getting completely run over by some of the powerhouses. I've seen a number of their DivIA games and goaltending for them has been atrocious. Not to mention that they have the bodies of 16 year-olds.

No they wouldn't.
'Easily get beat 30-0' sounds like an overstatement, but you'd definitely see record-breaking numbers (post-1998).

I wouldn't be suprised in the slightest if it went as far as 20-0, or worse.

My bet is 15-0

Whether it's 30 goals allowed or not, whenever Korea gets it's first goal, that place will be hopping, can't wait to see that! Looking into it, Ice Hockey is quite popular in Korea, in university ranks especially, there are a handful of kids that play the game growing up, which is good to see.

If only one day, Japan vs. Korea Gold Medal game Sochi 2064 games! Lol

They didn't change it, it was always 2 seasons.

Four seasons is when you have played for another national team before.

Sets up a Japan vs SK Ice hockey game at least on the women's side.

That should be a hoot.
