Kopitar's next contract?

He is a $10M player, but I think he takes less at max years. I'm guessing $8.5-9.5, just my hunch.

Was waiting for this thread. Thanks.

That gif is amazing.

The Kings can start negotiation an extension with Kopitar next July 1. In terms of real dollars, his salary in the last year of his contract is $7.7M.

I think he'll get over $8M, but not sure if he'll earn more than Getzlaf. I guess we'll have to wait and see how many points Kopitar can score and if his name will come up for consideration for the Hart. If so, then he's going to be looking at $9M+ per year.

I think, barring knowledge of a strong cap jump, they'll sign him for between $9.5-10M for max length.

No Kopi shouldn't get that much. Kane's and Toews' new contracts go from age 26-33 (that's at least 7 prime years), Kopitar will be already 29, when new contract kicks in, so it takes him to age 36. He might only give 3-4 prime years on that contract. I'm not saying Kopitar won't be good at 34, but it's a bigger risk he might slow down a little.

Kopitar has never really struck me as the kind of guy who is money hungry. I mean what can you buy with 10 million dollars a year that you cannot get with 8 or 9 million? In the end he will get paid well without getting paid like one of the greedy players that put their own materialistic needs over those of the team that helped them to be successful. At least that is my opinion of it.

Seemed to me he basically got as much as he could in his first 7 year extension, that was a big ticket at the time it was signed.. so if the past is an indicator of the future, which in most cases it is, I think it's fair to expect something around 10M.

That being said, the impression I get from Kopitar's personality is very close to that of a stereotypical Nordic player, they're often very loyal to a team that they've been with for a number of years and can be talked into taking a discount. It's gonna be interesting to see. But we're still a year away before anything can be signed and two years before it comes into effect, I'm sure I'm gonna be posting my opinion of it like at least a dozen more times before a deal gets done.

10 years 10M

Max years now is eight.

I think one thing that's being overlooked here is that Kane and Toews signed together. They did it last contract five years ago and they did it again. I'd wager that neither was going to sign until the other did and that both wanted the same salary. That's a lot of clout to hold over a management teams head.

Kopitar's negotiation is different from that, I say $9.3 million per for seven years.

Watch Kopi have two consecutive 90+point-seasons with Gaborik at his wing to earn him 12M for 8 years.

If the former happens I think most of us won't care about the latter, as there'll be more championships to celebrate.

If Toews is at 10.5 for maximum term, then Kopitar should be about 9.5 to 10 for the same. Slightly fewer accolades and a little older than Toews brings his value down just a bit.

I was gonna say the same thing.

Remember when we used to rarely agree? I agree with you! How fun is this? Much funner than arguing over when Lombardi will be fired and why he should, right? :yo:

There are a few variables that could come into play. If Kopitar's production sky rockets or the Kings win another Cup, I could see him getting upwards of $10M depending on what the cap is up to (wihch is another variable). I don't think his production will sky rocket that much and I don't think Kopitar would like to play anywhere else given what he has accomplished in LA since he came. It is like an NHL franchise story of rags to riches and he is a major part of it. I think he might hit some career numbers if Gaborik stays healthy. I do think the Kings stand a chance to win another Cup but that is certainly not a given. So at the end of the day, who really knows but I know the Kings will sign him and that is all that matters.

Some questionable players on the list. Kopitar is the best all around player on that list.

I like that Carter is listed as a player who if he was not allready locked up could get $10M.
Thank you Philly. (for the contract I know he came from the blue jackets)

I must be the outlier here but I think the Toews/Kane contracts are bonkers and they're actually bad-money deals. Not that I don't think they should get paid, and the market has certainly changed, but they're destroying Chicago's cap for the next few years. I think the Getzlaf/Perry contracts are the more normal bar for top players and that most players in that neighborhood will sign for from 8-9.5 million tops so as not to cripple their team.

I'm thinking Kopitar does 8.5 for 8. I know a lot can change in two years, though.
