I’m all about comparables when talking trade. My closest recent comparable to a higher end forward with 1.5 years remaining at this level (Rehkopf), who will play his 19 year old year in this league is last year’s Owen Beck deal.

I understand that today, Rehkopf is a rung below where Beck was last January. But, there’s a lot of hockey to be played between now and this year’s deadline.

I contend that if Rehkopf is on pace for 45-50 goals and displays an improved game under our new coaching staff by the time January rolls around, the Rangers can and will be looking for a return in the neighbourhood of the Beck deal.

I’m not saying a deal including as high a pick as Van Volson, but a 1st rounder nonetheless. And I’m not saying he’s the best ‘05 in the league and should bring back the most, in trade, of all ‘05’s, (Barlow and Ritchie were mentioned) but he may be the best ‘05 made available at the deadline.

There are teams this deadline who will be looking to load up big time for various reasons. For example, Saginaw is hosting. Anything that’s not welded to the floor will be in play, including their first round pick, and possibly two part deals.

Sudbury is another example. When was the last time that this team has gone deep in the playoffs? They are one of the favourites in the east to go deep, they have a massive draft pick cupboard with which to deal with, and as already displayed via their Windsor trade, that they’re going all in.

Missy looks great so far this year and Leenders has been stellar in net. This is a team who’s future is next year and the year after. But, maybe they’re interested in two years of Rehkopf in a deal where Ivankovic goes the other way. How long can they run with both those goalies? Do they think they can make some noise this year?

If one of these teams feels that they have a hole to fill and that hole is a high end goal scorer, they may be willing to give up a package in the neighbourhood of the Beck deal. Especially when you consider, if you are Saginaw or Sudbury, should you empty your draft cupboard at this deadline, they’d have a player that they can get good return for at the following deadline to start the rebuild, if that’s the direction they go in.

We know at the 24-25 deadline, we can get 2x2nds and 3x3rds for Rehkopf based on the going prices at last year’s deadline. In order for us to move him a year earlier, the return would have to be significant. That means it has to include someone’s 2023 1st rounder. Unless the offer includes that 1st rounder, I’m slamming the door shut on moving him in January. Period. End of story.

Love this team man.

2nd shutout for Parsons
Sop, Ando, Missle, Lam, Swick, who ever you want from tonight could be a 3 star.

Rehkopf Hat Trick.

Few power play goals

What a night!

Love this.

Quick little story from tonight’s game.

I sit right behind the Rangers bench. When Kitchener got the power play with half a minute left to go in the game all of the players huddled at the bench. Ahokas looks down at the defence and sends Andonovski out there. Andonovski had the biggest smile ever on his face because he never gets any power play time. Ahokas was smiling too and I assume it was just from the reaction he got. Motew and Hamara had huge smiles on their face for him too. There was a time over that last 30 seconds or so that Andonovski was tapping his stick on the ice for the pass. He didn’t get it but then crept into the slot and went in front of the net. You could see he was taking full advantage of the opportunity. Andonovski sure seems to be a leader on the team.

Would Luca Testa be worth a flyer for this team assuming it a middle round pick. First round pick last year who hasn’t found his footing and hasn’t played for Brantford this year yet.
He had surgery in the off season and played his first game against Peterborough tonight and scored a goal. He played well and the Bulldog announcers think he has a bright future in Brantford.

Great game, Romano will get one sooner than later. Hopefully they come flying Sunday and take advantage of Windsor on a back to back. Playing in Erie tomorrow night and travel here for a 2PM game Sunday.

Thanks for that story. Andonovski is currently leading the league in +/- . Very solid at the backend.
Makes you wonder if contenders are taking notice.

Glad they gave non-PP players a crack on that last attempt.

I admit having originally been a bit apprehensive at the thought of trading an 05 with Rehkopf's skill. However, I believe this coach has proven this early that he and his staff are capable of getting enough out of the remaining parts after the deadline - whatever that may be - to make this team at least competitive most nights. Also, if you are getting a young talented player in return (and I agree with you 100% on that point ES - that is a must), then taking the pain this early is likely better sooner than later.

When Reid, Lam, Stark, Romano and McNeil and Edwards are 19 years-old, the Rangers won't be the only team in contention. Might as well increase the team's odds down the road by being proactive now.

At risk of sounding like I'm pumping your tires yet again ES :) , another well-written post on your part.

That’s the thing. Being proactive. For example, it cost us 2x2nds and 3x3rds for half a year of Zhilkin. Why not pick up that player in a Rehkopf deal now. Then when contention rolls around, that player is already in our lineup.

If we can acquire a 1st rounder plus picks this year for Rehkopf, it makes good sense to do so. Especially since we aren’t slated to contend this year or next and have an empty cupboard.

Rangers get their collective butts kicked last Sunday in Saginaw. So they mope and get down about it? No, they listened to Ahokas and his great coaching team, they obviously didn't just watch film, they applied it. Honestly, I didn't know what to expect last night against Barrie but it sure wasn't an
8-0 game. WOW.

They all worked together like a finely oiled machine and just kept it coming from the start to the end. No foot off the gas.....THANK YOU....and stopped celebrating when the score got up there....CLASS. And that goal by LAM......it was said that he would be electric and last night, he brought me right out of my seat with that goal he got. The way he weaves and wheels through traffic is reminiscent of a Connor Bedard (NOT saying he's Bedard....relax). And his passing is spot on. Should Mesar return (I kind of hope he doesn't), leave Lam on that 2nd line because he's proven he can do it.

Ando......I remember in his rookie year when he could be easily taunted into retaliation. Those days are gone. He stands tall and when need be, he stands his ground and players are not so eager to engage. Hamara....that's the player I thought we had last season. His game keeps getting better and better.

And Reid....oh yeah....he's a rookie. I don't even think about that in a game. Gotta love Campbell too. He's gritty when he needs to be, always engaged in the play, and man can that kid skate. A player might get past him but he sure catches up in a hurry!

One last comment.....Razor is a beast.

Nice to have a real coach
So true, now we don't have to make trades to cover up for coaching deficiencies. Now it appears (still early but looking promising) Mckenzie can trade players for future assets without missing much of a beat.
The overall performance of the team has drastically improved in all facets. But for me the one area of improvement is the players throughly enjoy playing for this staff and this staff showing faith in the players. (which came first)?

The point that really stands out with Jussi is he is a defense first coach. A real defensive system was what was missing here the last few years. It's great that all players had a green light the past few seasons. It gives fans some exciting moments. Yet when the team defense breaks down and players totally miss assignments it gets frustrating not only for fans but coaches and players. In saying this there are always going to be break downs in the defensive end no matter how great a team thinks they are at any moment in time. You can see the difference already in the play. Rangers are digging in and trying not to get out numbered in scrums. They seem relentless in back checking the opposition. Not giving up on plays like they use to. In post game interviews Jussi is cautious about complimenting players. He seems to look at the whole game not just highlites. He did say Lam is going to be a hell of a player in this league. Was limited in his response on Rehkopf who had a hattrick in the 3rd. Seems like he wants 60 minute effort by all players no matter what lane they are in. I could be miss reading him. He keeps his thoughts close to his chest. Putting last night's game into perspective they Rangers limited Barrie hugely in the shot department. Thewy never offered much in either end. Is Barrie this bad or is it the Ranger coaching?

What impressed me the most from last nights game was the teams defensive play. They gave up 6, 4 and 8 shots in each period.

I know Barrie wasn’t on their A game but they still have some talented players.

For real lol
And it wasn't even the best one. The 9th offside goal was a thing of beauty.
Bottineau knew exactly where to put that puck. It was very nice. Felt bad for Ben West. Was hung out to dry by the coaches/his team/everybody and honestly its weird to say but considering the score, he actually played pretty good.

I was channel surfing during the intermission and caught the last two questions of the Hunter B interview. Did you guys see it? The kid is hilarious, great interview!

The games have been a lot of fun so far this year. It may be partly just lowered expectations, but enjoyable anyway.

I watch the game as a fan and don't pretend to know much about structure and whether the team is playing 'more' or 'less' structured than last year, but to me, whatever structure they are playing allows the players to play faster and more aggressive. Last year they seemed to play a more passive game, whereas this year they play a more attacking, pressure, forecheck kind of game. And without a lot of odd-man rushes coming back. It makes for entertaining hockey - even when they don't win - and I hope it continues.

The depth scoring that drove the earlier season success has dried up a bit. That is something to keep in mind if it continues (early on, small sample size, etc. ect.). Almost 60% of KIT's points are from their top 4 producers. Trade a couple of those guys and it will have a massive impact, down through the lineup. Even just trading Hunter B (which is all but inevitable) will have a significant impact, given that he has more points than all the other defenders combined.

All this wordy post to say that I'm not convinced Rehkopf gets traded this year. I get all the reasons for considering it. Both GMMM and the Joose are on the record that they think it is imperative to have quality older players both for leadership and to insulate your younger players and ensure they are put in positions to succeed. If I'm GMMM I set a very high price on Razor. If the value isn't a Beck return then fine - keep him and deal him in January of 2025 in a picks based deal. A wildcard in this calculus is Pobezal. If he were to show after Christmas, maybe you have a little more room to maneuver. That feels like an extreme longshot.

Deal Hunter this year and Razor and Ando next and the picks cupboard is refilled with something left over. Any other potential deals (Missle, Swick, Martin, Mesar??) are gravy.

Sorry for the long post, this one got away from me. Good atmosphere at the Aud for a rebuilding team. I hope the fans keep coming out, even if the wins dry up a bit.

In my opinion between now and a few years out, Kitchener will obviously need to recoup those higher valuable picks that they parted with last season to refill. But I think many would agree that this is not enough. They also need figure out a way to build up a surplus by then. If Kitchener is fortunate enough to be awarded host of the Memorial Cup tournament, you want a huge war chest. The host has a huge advantage over every other team in the entire CHL. Other teams deal with the risks of trading away their assets, while the host doesn't have the same risk.

So I think MM needs to figure out the best way to get as many of those picks as possible - which also includes the timing. There are only a limited number of players on this team that will bring in those 2nds. Mind you, of course you still need to have a willing trading partner who will offer what you expect.
