If I'm a dman I would give NCAA strong consideration. Most of the top dmen currently in the NHL were NCAA or Euro trained, not CHL.
Wouldn't it be great to see a few players get drafted right off the immediate roster as opposed to "flyer" picks the Rangers drafted in past drafts. It would make the team seem more legit when it comes to scouting prospects and give the fans more confidence.

Malik Report on Martin at Wings Dev Camp.

#94 Mitchell Martin, LW**: Martin hasn’t stood out thus far as a free agent invite from the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers. A mid-range scorer at the Major Junior level, he’s a massive 6’4″ but lanky at 199 pounds, and Martin has more or less blended in thus far as a 19-year-old invite.

If I’m a high end NHL draft pick and I have the choice to go OHL or NCAA, and my intent is to go pro after a year or two of being drafted, I don’t understand why I would go the NCAA route.
The NCAA route usually has a lot to do with Mom & Dad. It's very well sold by the top schools too. Education is the key and those without strong academics are not going and if they do, they'll be in the CHL by 2nd semester. Sweetest experience ever has to be Ivy League student athlete. There's not too many first rounders in the NCAA but there are a lot of drafted players and >85% get their degree, emerge at 22 with their pro offer still in hand and enter the NHL (etc) or get on with life quite well credentialed.

Once you look past the first rounders ... pro hockey careers are rare, short and the majority of players never make more than $600/wk.

Cajan signs with AHL's Cleveland Monsters

Hate to see him go but no surprise here. Best of luck, Pavel! Parsons, your turn to shine brighter. This opens up an OA spot AND and import spot. The possibilities are intriguing.

We still have three OA’s without Cajan. And hopefully, two of our three remaining imports sign.

In all honesty, Cajan wasn’t really in our plans this year. If we were using him, a heck of a lot would have had to go wrong with the imports and Parsons.

And one can't help but wonder if Rangers kept him "in the running" to help Cajan somehow when he went to a dev camp? But yes, with Parsons who showed well as a rookie and Vandenberg in the wings, Cajan was not part of the equation especially as an import.

That and worse case scenario if Cajan came back he was a tradeable asset. Great to see him move on.

You guys don't need him. Parsons is a great goalie already. Only concern may be a lack of a vet behind him, but its not like there's alot of pure backups out there either.

Pavel wanted to stay in North America, the rest was a wait and see. I suspect we protected him while we freely could to both aid his career prospects and insure our rights would return value if an eventual trade scenario was the outcome. Bravo, Pavel!

Rangers BUG spot will be hotly contested, hopefully by capable prospects including a much improved Marcus Vandenberg and our new 6'4" '06, Luca DiFelice.

Vandenberg is an 04, if he doesn't make it now, he's forever a #3 or perhaps a trade option, but I bet most teams feel they have an 04/05 just as good.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I selfishly wanted him back just for the potential trade. Definitely, Parsons is ready for prime time and I can see Vandenberg taking 10 to 20 games this year. If another BUG makes some noise at camp this year, all the better.

Would he have value? I can't remember the last time an overage/import was in the league, let alone was traded.

Maybe, maybe not but worth the risk. Given his performance last year, he would be worth alot to a team that was "going for it" but just didn't have the goaltending..

Don't know...don't care.
What matters is listing Cajan as a possible OA costs the Rangers nothing and as remote as it is, he may have via a trade recouped a cpl draft picks.
overage imports just dont get traded at all, let alone goalies. sure nothing lost but there would be zero interest in him not because hes a bad goalie, but because there never are oa/imports unless they are elite.

When is the last time its happened?
Igor Bobkov (Knights->Fronts) in 2011.

(Almost) Ramis Sadikov, also 2011, after he was released by Detroit and limboed as 'surplus' OA & goalie in Erie while being shopped around. Erie eventually dealt Festarini and went with Sadikov/Teichmann ... until the infamous game when Sadikov got hurt near the start and Connor Crisp had to don the pads.

100% - Vandenberg will very likely need to have improved considerably over the Summer to get out of the GOJHL for good (IMO), especially with younger guys like DiFelice (...Monaco, Dube, ?) in the pipeline. I'd like to see a good duel at camp with our draftees and perhaps a surprise invitee, so we can ice the best BUG possible.

Ya, that was kind of my point. Once in 11 years and it probably didn’t happen much before then either. If it’s that rare it’s probably rare for a reason

It took the Rangers 60 years to even have a brush with possibly having an OA Import goalie ;) Over 22 years the average number of import goalies signed (or even drafted) into the OHL each year likely rounds to zero.

The OHL had a ban on import goalies for a good part of the last 11 years. Also just because it's rare (admittedly it is) doesn't mean the player wouldn't have value. Fortunately for Cajan he found better option so he didn't have to return. However, from all accounts he was more than willing.

Your not wrong, but if I had could bet $1 and get $100 that it would happen, or bet $100 and get $1 that it would not, the smart money is on not every time.
