Trying to get inside MM’s head going into the draft, keeping in mind his primary focus is the 26-27 season:

Does MM have a deal cooked up with William Moore going into the draft? (ie Rehkopf situation).

Does he feel he needs to use a 1st rounder to draft a goalie? If there was ever a time to take a goalie in the 1st round (usually regarded as a gamble) it’s when you have two 1sts, and when the goaltender is as highly regarded as Ivankovic is.

Is he looking to go in on Brady Martin if he’s selected by the Soo and if Martin is designated defective in September? He doesn’t have the picks to close such a deal now but could trade his way into having them by September.

It's going to be interesting. Personally I wouldn't take a goalie with a first round pick because as you said they're just too big of a gamble. Really need the first 3 picks to hit.

Is there a possibility of getting the Sags first round pick as part of Rehkopf and/or Brzustuwicz? Is it worth keeping them until January and trading them during the period for such deals?

I don’t like the idea of taking a goalie 1st round. So many good goalies come out of later rounds. I think you just have to take the best player available which for the 2 1st rounders imo will be forwards. You use everything you got to land 1st round players from this draft using Rehkopf, Hunter, Sop, Martin, Mesar, etc.

You want to come out of at the end of 2023-24 season with 4 players drafted in the 1st round…that’s the goal. You already have 2. With the talent available to trade away I think 4 is realistic.

Read something I think in the draft thread stating Martin wants to play closer to home. Lets hope for a miracle and he drops to the Rangers. According to one knowledgeable poster the Soo wants him and will take him regardless of his wishes and try to convince him to report. Lots of drama preceding the draft and deadline. Keeps our blood flowing.

The season that never was.

We don't need to eulogize the season. We've been doing that since October 20th, 2022 lol.

Lets start with whose gone.

Franky Pinelli- He may get a shot at the NHL. Went from very good to elite this year.

Reid Valade - Covid robbed him of his potential. Will be missed

Marco Constantini- Steady goalie. USports seams likely with his twin.

Leyton Moore- He was alright, USPORTS likely path

Franky Arcuri- He'll be in Texas.

Danny Zhilkin- He didn't produce like an NHL prospect but he's very effective. Hell be in the AHL

Roman Schmidt- Good Riddance. Didn't develop. Wont be back despite some people thinking he will. He signed his ELC after the draft so he'll be making his minimum next year regardless and no way would a team pay that for him to play in CHL. Don't know what he had on the Rangers management for him to be the only player the last two seasons to be the only full time Asst Captain. (Both home and away) or what he did to deserve 1st pairing minutes but at least we don't have to watch him anymore. One of the most frustrating players I have watched in the 20+ years of cheering for this team.

Filip Mesar- Despite some saying he could be back, I can't imagine Montreal is happy with how he progressed here. Dominated at every level. Dominated at World Juniors. Was a PPG when MM took the bench back but the team didn't use him properly. CD's systems didn't work with finesse players. I could see him in the AHL. He wont need top 6 minutes in laval. He can play on the bottom lines and get additional minutes on PP1 or PP2. But I don't see Montreal sending him back here unless a trade is requested. A potential 3rd coach in the span of a year isn't a good look.
Thomas Hamara- Same with Mesar. Ottawa likely not super happy with development. Could see ice in the AHL. Considering most of ottawas prospects on D are going to be in the NHL next season the spot will be there.

Likely gone

Mitchell Martin- I can't really get into many specifics but he did request a trade this season. I see him gone in the off season. Honestly, thats the best case for the team. Allows you to lock in your OA's during camp. No rush to sell one and Martin will be in demand.

Hunter Bruzzz- At this point, it seams like the worst kept secret is that he is going to Saginaw. All the stars align that way. Allows for a quick refill of the cupboard.

Antonino Pugliese- In his games this year he didn't take any step forward after a semi impressive rookie season. He's 19 and doesn't offer much outside of a 4th line role. Had as many points as our back up goalie lol. He had 1 point at 5VS5 in 38 games. And his other point was a secondary point on the PP on a 7th goal of the game late in the 3rd.

Returns and dealt at deadline

Rehkopf- He'll go at the deadline but considering next year is clearly a tank season, I don't want him around all year. Could be the difference between 1st overall and 5th overall. He'll go to a team entering a 2 year window. (Missy, Oshawa)

Motew- <My other choice for captain. Probably our best defencemen. He'll be in demand at the deadline. He also deserves a shot at a championship. He'll be missed but he'd bring in a nice return for an OA.

Enter,
1st round pick
1st round pick
2nd round pick
1 import pick
2 import pick

Any players brought in from trades. Maybe a few free agents that impress. And some unsigned prospects.

Onto coaching.

It's going to be risky if MM isn't back on the bench but this would of been the proper time for him to step down and bring in Chris Dennis. He would have had a longer leash.

I was in Barrie yesterday and ran into Kevin Hendersons aunt and uncle and he's coaching Junior out west. Wouldn't hate to see a former ranger who lead by example. One of the hardest workers at least get an interview.

He has to hit this out of the park. Our development is counting on it.

It seams like things are lining up for Kitchener to get the 2027 mem cup, which would likely be a swan song to the aud in terms of big events, thats something to look forward to and we can be there if this goes right.

Thanks for the chats this season everyone. Hope everyone enjoys the draft tonight. A new era starts now.

Returns full time

Matty Sop, likely the captain if I had to pick. Hardest worker
Mercer- Showed promise in playoffs
Missle- really improved as season went on
Swick- Has shown top 6 promise. Yantsis potential?
Andonovski- Hope someone takes him in the later rounds. Very simple defencemen who uses frame well
Hollett- Would love to see him back. Veteran leadership will be key next year
Bottineau- Will be part of the group we build around. He'll take a nice step with increased ice time
Morey- Not sure where he'll end up. He doesn't offer much but the roster spot is there for the taking
Scott- I didn't mind his game. Again very simple. He's one of my 6 D in camp. Nothing more than a 5/6 but nothing wrong with that.

Vandenburg. Parson. DeFelice- Battle it out. May the best 2 men win.

In a wishful thinking world, by the time the January trade deadline is wrapped up, we will have, in order:

-drafted two players in the first round this year who’ll be impact players. Maybe one is William Moore who reports.

-traded for Brady Martin’s rights in September after accumulating the necessary picks to do so, in the off season, by moving out vets, including Hunter B for Kyrou return.

-traded Rehkopf at the January deadline for Owen Beck return which includes a team’s first round pick plus 2nds and 3rds.

All this would give us four 07 born 1st rounders along with 07’s we took in the 2nd and 3rd round finishing next season on the roster - preferably three forwards, two D and a goalie. If the goalie was taken in the 2nd or 3rd round, maybe he joins the Rangers in the fall of ‘24. But I wouldn’t lose sleep if we used a 1st on Ivankovic. Especially since by the time the January deadline passes we’d have three other players taken in the 1st round.

From any rankings I had seen, I am surprised that Matheas Stark slipped to the 3rd round. So were the draft show analysts.

Lam was 39 at worst on the lists I've seen, with some having him closer to the first round, and the Toronto Star mock draft had Lam going 12 to OS. Seems like a really good trio of forwards and what seems to be the 2nd best defenseman from the outlets that saw him (Bishop Kerney didn't play many Canadian tournaments from the looks of it, limiting exposure).

Back-to-Back picks coming up in the 4th round tomorrow. Arguably, perhaps they take a D-man next. But with four potentially solid picks (?) already in the books, would they take a chance on mid first round-rated Lev Katzin ?

I honestly have no idea. But the composite mock that Brock Otten put together had all 4 of our picks rated in the first round. Time will tell but reason to be optimistic.

I would, he's tendered to Green Bay Gamblers but no NCAA commitment. Victor Oreskovich started in GB before moving on to the Rangers, maybe he could tell Lev how much better it was in Kitchener ;)

Solid picks last night. All seem excited to be drafted by the Rangers. Rumours about Stark going to the U.S. but here's his quote:
“It’s pretty crazy an honour to get drafted to such a prestigious organization like Kitchener. I’m really excited,” said Stark. “They’re super professional, everything was amazing, top of the league in all categories. It’s really a spectacular place and I cannot wait to get started.”

Quite sure it means nothing but found it interesting that the OHL site is listing The Bulldogs being from Brantford now. Yes, I know it's a temporary or is it?

Cameron Arquette F at 5'7" with this said about him:
Cameron Arquette (Sun County Panthers) – A personal favourite of mine to watch this season, Arquette is electrifying and just all over the ice. His speed is fantastic and his ability to stick handle at that top speed makes him hard to defend. Has been the offensive backbone for Sun County this year and is another player I feel is going a bit under the radar as the focus has been on the likes of Roobroeck and Martin.
