Tall is important, because it also means he has good reach, etc.

He does need to fill out though for sure.

????
D which we all know takes a lot more time to develop....so Romanov at 22, after 133 games and 2 seasons in which he double production and ice-time won't improve and has no upside while Dach at 21, after 3 seasons without any improvement and 152 games has tons of potential and upside?

What upside flashes as he shown?

With Dach you still have flashes of the 3rd overall C he was supposed to be.

This trade still makes me want to puke this morning.

I’ve never been high on Dach, his draft year production was not good and his work in the NHL thus far is Kotkaniemi-level. Another “big body” high-pick that hasn’t panned out.

I hope I eat crow on this one because if Dach can become what some people think, our Top 6 is set. Personally I think he’s max a 3C in this league. Time will tell.

tbf, Romanov for Young Top 3 C ain't bad.

Hopefully he becomes Top 2 C though

i'm catching up this morning and I won't lie I laughed out loud seeing we picked up a potentially cursed young 3rd overall
Yes but hopefully we can trust the new front office to make smart decisions. They wouldn't have gone to this length if they didn't believe Dach was going to turn into something really good. The days of Bergevin and company are long gone.Tough to convince a lot of members on this board to give it a chance.Although after what we observed the last 25 years can't say i blame them.

Flashes that he could become a solid top 4 D.......that's enough.
D tooks a lot longer, you didn't had a whole lot of flashes from Hedman in his first 4 years....not saying Romy is a Hedman but surely we've seen a strong progression this season especially when Marty came in. He's in progression and ALREADY a top 4 D.

Dach is not in progression and not even a strong 3 C.

I know there's still upside in Dach but there's surely also a ton in Romanov.

I’m on board with the Dach project! I’m pulling for him!

But if we were gonna trade Romanov, i might have called the Jets and try to work something for Dubois. Maube Dvorak+Romanov+26th?

It’s not. You’re right. I’m likely overreacting to a trade I dislike right now.

I happened to like a lot of players on the board at 13.. so I think that’s what irks me the most here. Nazar/Lekkerimaki/Kemell were all high on my list and available there.

The NHL is littered with big promising players who simply didn't pan out.
Recently you can add Cody Glass, Nolan Patrick, Alex Galchenyuk, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Kaapo Kakko.
Dach until he proves otherwise falls into this category.

And there's nothing wrong with that. Hopefully you give Dach a chance and then let his play dictate your thoughts going forward.

Do you really think they didn't look into it

When you get offered Kirby Dach, you don’t ask for more.

Abso-freaking-lutely.

Slaf wasn’t my guy either, but I’ll be cheering these guys on hard because their our guys now whether we agree with it or not. If they reach their potential, we win. It’s that simple!

Romanov for 13th OV is a homerun for me given his limitations.

13 and 66 for Dach is expensive at this point especially since I liked who was available at 13. If Dach develops into a 2C, then it's a great trade too.

I don't think Dubois is in the mix but i could be wrong. He could screw up the tank for next year. Also we couldn't afford him with his cap number. For now i think we are looking at affordable prospects with upside

Problem is that we gave a big 6'1'' already top 4 D who didn't bad luck with injuries who was developing quite well.
Where are we deepest in the Habs organization? LD
I'm not sure if Romy is a top 4 D on a strong team.

Great asset management in taking a flyer on a 21 year old big center who was a recent #3 pick. We weren't getting him for nothing. It's now up to MSL to get some of that untapped potential out of him. Time is on our side as we're not expected to contend.

With Dach, how was he even drafted 3OV? I didn't follow the 2019 draft but his WHL numbers are very average.

Anybody care to enlighten me? Thanks.
More of a question of ability. His size + stickandling + skating is a tantalizing combo and scouts tend to overlook production when it comes to players with that profile.

Yeah Dachs junior numbers arent even very impressive its tough to get excited about hopefully its a big brain move and they are high on him and know they can work with him

He's 6'4 (close to 6'5), can skate, great dressing room guy / leader, right hand center and pass first guy. Can be a prick on the ice at times, but not enough in my opinion. Not an overly physical guy for his size, but uses his body very well and has a good active stick. Very good defensively. In junior he played all situations, PP/PK/ES. With Chicago he played "behind" Dylan Strome & Jonathon Toews, both whom average over 17 minutes of ice-time, but surprisingly Dach came in around 18 minutes with virtually NO PP time, yet scored 26 points (Compared to 48 for Strome & 37 for Toews). The year before Dach had 10 points in 18 games.

He's only 21 as well. I don't get the Kotkaniemi comparisons as other than age they are two very different players. In his first three seasons in Montreal, KK played extremely sheltered minutes (around 13-14 a game), Dach has not and was Chicago's most used center last year.

Dach is also a more cerebral player than KK, and already has the defensive game to keep playing higher minutes. The difference in Montreal is that he'll be doing so with actual scoring wingers now / top 6 minutes and no need to be protected on the ice, either physically or defensively like KK was.

I think if you give the guy until Christmas, many opinions will be changed watching this guy day to day. I think Montreal could use a 21 year old, huge right shot center with a great makeup / leadership who chips in 40-50 points a year and can play in all situations behind Suzuki.

Time will tell.

I'd try doing the Pacioretty route and have him start year in the AHL. Put him with Slafkovsky and have them both with a older AHLer.

Slafkovsky - Dach - Ylonen
Heineman - Mysak - Pinard
Martel - Simoneau - Schnarr?
Gignac - Condotta - AHLer

Guhle - Barron
Norlinder - AHLer
Xhekaj - AHLer

Primeau

Would be nice to have a bunch of the futures play together and have success. Call up Dach if he does really well in November/December.
