Player Discussion Kirby Dach (Part 3): TabarDach Edition!

Injuries turned them from elite to very good. Dach is average. These injuries will make him below average.

It’s also crazy to suggest it’s just a label when he’s never had a full healthy season dating back to the WHL. Like how can you say with a straight face that there’s nothing to the label of injury prone when he’s taking the most basic of physical contact and is OFS.
There's for sure an argument that all the missed time will have a serious negative impact on what his peak performance level. But that's a different argument to he's an injury prone player who will never stay healthy.

To be fair I think there are some legit cases. Just take a look at the list of bandaid boys on DobberHockey and you'll see these guys rarely put together some full seasons
Which would also be true if it was all just luck, there's a large enough sample size of players that you'll get even the very unlikely outcomes.

I wasn't just referring to this years injury. Every time he leaves the bench, most of us are wondering if he's coming back to the game.
Dach concerns me deeply on two levels. First how long will it take for him to give us a top 6 worthy performance next year if he even can?
Second how long can he play at a top 6 level before he sustains another injury.

We can't afford another season of 30 plus games for Kirby to find a level of fitness.
For me Kirby Dach is proving his underlying numbers in his last season in Chicago and his horrendous numbers here this season is exactly who he is.

Here's what I think is going to happen.

Dach is hopefully training and rehabing as hard as he can, and eating healthy foods.

He might be ready to play hockey again in November or something.

He'll start off with a conditioning stint in Laval. Maybe 4 games or so. He will easily destroy the AHL which isn't actually noteworthy but fans will get excited.

Then Dach will come to the NHL and play on third or fourth line wing. What comes after is less clear.

If he plays well, he will be bumped up the lineup and fans will say "I told you so, I knew Dach was part of the team's core, Hughes is good at trading" and he will be considered an untouchable.

If he plays badly, he will stay in the bottom six, and fans will say "I told you so, I knew he was never good, Hughes isn't good at trading" and Dach will soon be traded for another reclamation project.

As long as we don’t baby him for 40 games while we’re a bottom 5 team waiting for him to get out of his funk

Doesn’t Guhle have a significant injury history from his minor league days? If so, scouts need to pay attention — the ability to stay healthy is on par with any other skill — some even say that health is a skill.

Some players are more susceptible to injury, freak or not. If they’re missing time in their minor league career, chances are that trend will continue as an NHLer. 💀

After 6 years of pro hockey,Dach has played on average 44 games\year with a 20 pts per year average.
So at this point, I’m not expecting anything different more from him.
He’s our modern day Guiilaume Latendresse ; stats are almost exactly the same.
Big bodied, offensively skilled young player that never fails to disappoint due to repeated injuries.
If I’m HuGo, I’m pretty much considering this trade as a liability instead of an asset.
It would be a nice surprise if he magically became a reliable player, but management has to plan a second line that does not include him for the future.

The hope for Dach, at this point, is 3rd line RW. Anything more than that is setting yourself up for disappointment.

Guhle, Dach and Slafkovsky are similar in that all three seem to be in dangerous positions on the ice and take the brunt of physical contact. Is it just a fluke, or is it a lack of awareness necessary to have a long career?

Slaf has been crushed by way too many hits at his size. The same goes for Dach, but then we can look at Suzuki, who seems to contribute and stay away from danger, so to speak.

Anything he provides now is gravy. At this point he’s just trying to salvage his career.

Tragic situation. He would’ve been a great 2nd line center for us.

Yeah I also saw him unable to get back defensively as am after affect.
I’m not even going to argue the veracity of this but, if that’s really what you saw, why are you even talking about playing him in the top6? Why is it an issue only if he plays on the 3rd line?

Because his point production as a top 6 player was supposed to put him over the top.
Unfortunately his numbers never lived up to the hype. Top 6 or bust IMO.

Here's how I see things playing out for him next season.

He comes back strong, has a successful season and we can still sign him cheap because one season does not warrant an over pay or we can move him.

He comes back and does not succeed which means we just let him walk as his value is really low. This could be because he gets injured again which would probably end his career or just playing poorly.

Either way we are in an ok position, at worst we lost some assets taking a risk on a player that you'd be silly not to take a risk on.

I would send him to Slovakia with Slaf for the summer

If he can't improve his conditioning at least he can have some time to get adjusted to his new surroundings

What is that saying? The best ability is availability?

He's basically the polar opposite of Suzuki in that sense. He showed good signs in year 1, but he had to be shut down that year. He was shut down in year 2 as well right at the start. In year 3, he never regained the form he showed in year 1, and he got shut down yet again playing less games than year 1.

Now he's 24, and missed too much time. He will no longer be penciled into a top 6 role. It's very much an uphill battle for him now, especially in Montreal.
