If Cal is bad when the games matter, we can have that discussion. I just think the overreaction to everything in the pre-season is massive (as it is every year)

At least let him suck in a real game and then maybe we can look at other alternatives.

Yeah, we've been a bit tough on him this preseason [rightfully so]. A lot of #1's around the league have been lit up far worse so far. Lets hope reg season Cal is far more sharper.

I agree with you completely regarding preseason, but I think there are lingering questions left over from last year. The new contract kicking in has put a spotlight on him, Cal is now the 14th highest paid goaltender in the league, just behind Shesterkin who signed just a month before him. Again, preseason doesn't matter a whole lot, but coming off such a rough season and now being paid similar to the 3 previous Vezina finalists will have people notice his play.

A lot of guys don't care about pre-season, it's a complete joke to them. Of course no one says it while they are still playing but if you listen to interviews on shows like Chiclets and stuff it has been addressed by retired guys about just not giving a crap and then flipping a switch.

Is that unprofessional? Perhaps, but Cal also knows in the back of his mind that his role is basically locked in, he and Quick are going to be in a pretty even split this season and nothing that happens in the pre-season is going to change that. Goaltending is largely mental, maybe he flips a switch once the real games start, maybe he doesn't. I just think it's stupid to draw absolute conclusions based on games that mean nothing.

Yup. This is an uncharacteristically bad stretch for Petersen. His SV% in the preseason is .853%. His career average is .908. And he's declined every year:
.924
.922
.911
.895

I'm sure there's someone who's chest thumping that he's some sort of savant who has said nothing other than "Cal sucks", but this is the worst he's ever looked, either on the ice or in numbers.

I was not one of those people and I’m not really a Cal P fan either, but the Kings haven’t even played a game this season. You should wait until an official game happens before pounding your chest.
I will do it right now because he looks terrible and is not going to suddenly look great especially when you consider he was trash last year. But those likes are telling on your comment.

Vilardi is a man on the mission in pre-season. All facets of his game are elevated and he's looking to score each shift. He's looks like a completely different player. He's trying to dictate the play rather than let the play come to him - I think that's the biggest change in his game. Let's hope he can continue finding that smile in the regular season.

Thank God it's just pre-season because Mikey Anderson looked like absolute dogshit.

JAD is rad but his play this pre-season has been rather disappointing, and others have mentioned on here that if he can't beat out Lizotte for that 4th line center spot then he belongs in the AHL until he's able to do that.
The power play is a world of difference.

I'd really prefer to see Copley in the last pre-season game. Cal is not giving this team a chance to win.

If you wanted to make excuses for Petersen there are two in play. He’s a little behind in his preparation due to the injury (groins can be tricky) and it looks like it’s still an issue between his ears as his technique is not like It was 2 years ago. If it’s no1 then that mitigates things to a degree, but if I’m honest I don’t think it begins to fully explain it. If it’s between his ears he needs to shake it off now because it’ll only gets worse if he starts costing us regular season games.

He’s got the ability but given how mentality affects goaltending if he doesn’t get it together soon it could absolutely finish him off. Let’s hope not. I only think he may still recover because he’s not playing his game at the moment, he’s a long way short of showing the best of his ability. The worry is he wouldn’t be the first goaltender to get buried in this sort of hole.

Mikey Anderson should not be playing on first pairing for sure.
To me his game belongs to third paring.

I actually think Bjornfot has closer to a top pairing upside than Anderson and I think we often forget he’s still very young for a D. I’m actually ok with him being down with the Reign until they can move Walker once he proves his fitness (surely that’s the plan). Getting big minutes down in the AHL is fine in the short term as like others have said it will help him add some offence but mostly I want to see him assert himself. Obviously it really shouldn’t be the long term plan for him.

I believe that Tobi will be great with Doughty.
He just needs more confidence in his own abilities.

The most Sean Durzi stat line ever. 1G 2A, 3P, -3.

Vintage Durzi! Picking up right where he left off!

I think what's really telling is he looked strong in the game before he got hurt, and he's looked like dog shit since. That alone buys him some time in my eyes...but as I said last night, if they're playing him through it, he's gotta pick it up.

I think it's one part he's still in his own head like he has been since the contract, I have no doubt he's feeling it right now, and one part the conditioning/injury.

For better or worse, Kings are gonna let him fight through it at least for a bit, but if it becomes a weight on the playoff expectations, I suspect they'll turn to Copley or elsewhere.

If Walker is good to go and plays well, and the team is doing well, they're not trading him in season. That does not seem like a Blake type move. They'll go with what they have, and especially if Clarke sticks, Bjornfot will just play the year in Ontario. Basically what they did with JAD last year after playing 34 out of 56 games in 20-21.

Mikey Anderson and Sean Durzi should be paired together. Durzi is completely lost defensively and needs a guy like Mikey to stabilize the defensive zone. Really the definition of a power play specialist. Mikey can't develop a complete game in Drew's shadow. He's not assertive. He could be a better player on the third pairing.

I agree but I think Walker playing the left hand side at a 2nd pair level is far from being a given. Hence I think theres a chance he gets moved once he shows the knee is good to go. It may also explain why they’ve had a look a Clarke on the left. I don’t read any more into it that just simply experimenting at this point but it does suggest they are open to all options.
