I had more time to think about it over beer and my Al Bundy beer league championship and
My issue is this lack of coverage is sort of a symptom of a bigger issue a few of us have had for some time.
It feels like a self-fulfilling prophecy that no one wants to watch preseason games...in a similar way that only the black-and-white jerseys sell. Of course no others will when you restrict access.
Between all that, the diminishing media access where the outsourced 'team' bloggers (present company nonwithstanding) are douchey gate keepers towards fans over their perceived silly thoughts while peddling their own hottakes (lolThompson) as 'insider' experts...
I feel like I'm being told what I like/want rather than being listened to at all. And maybe I'm just an old, jaded fan and what I want doesn't matter anymore because they're also rebuilding/going after a new audience. I also fully understand this is just my experience so it's anecdotal but that's where I am at this point, but even with a good team, I'm starting to feel more distant from this franchise because at every turn, because every time I even TRY to provide some feedback, either an 'official' team media presence or a 'better' fan than me is telling me why said feedback is dumb. And it only gets more restrictive as media members drop like flies.
It's frankly really f***ing stupid that me saying "hey I'd like to see this team more, especially since the 32nd franchise in the league and its fellow last-place teams can stream practice" results in several pages of f*** offs and several PMs justifying why it's ok. Bless you all, I know it's coming from a good place just like my criticisms are, but it really really doesn't feel like the current administration gives one shit what the fans want, not from a player deployment/utilization/coaching perspective--which they shouldn't--but from an actual entertainment perspective.
Quit telling me what I like and acting like I should be grateful to get anything at all. It's a VERY smug way to run an entertainment franchise. I was practically begging to waste money on a reverse retro jersey, but nope, since Luc is colorblind, those don't sell. I just wanted to watch my overhyped team play preseason just like the actual tire fire franchises, but nope, the 2nd largest media market in America can't or doesn't want to figure out the nuance between broadcast rights and internet streaming. I want more media access, but nope, we're going to keep cutting people until only sycophants who yell at fans are left. And then the remaining fans will tell those who want more what assholes they are. Can you imagine running a business like that, where you biggest fans want more, and you're going 'nah?'
Frankly, they should be so lucky many of us are still here after the last few years and should be begging us to come back but fortunately for them most of us are self-deprecating idiots who have dealt with much worse. But they are making it really hard to just enjoy what's going on.
I'll be over it tomorrow, and the season will go on eventually. But I'm sorry, for a professional organization that seems to know what they want to do on-ice, the lack of articulated vision and communication with fans are getting pretty old. I can respect Blake keeping his cards close to his chest with the on-ice stuff, but I can't respect the "yeah f*** preseason, here's more dog calendar" stuff coming from elsewhere.
