Wait, what?? How is Minnesota involved?

It should read as: and in a separate discussion, Brian Lawton brought up Philly previously having discussions with Minny about a Mason-Coyle swap. If I am reading the OP correctly

Philly going with Neuvirth over Mason is going to be a mistake

Mason has shown he can be a 50 game starter, and Neuvirth hasn't. But what we don't know in these situations is how the contract talks have been going. What if Mason's agent told Hextall he won't go lower than 6 x 6? Then you might need to look at getting value for a player you aren't going to re-sign. Hopefully without torpedoing your playoff chances this season.

With how low agents and GMs and whoever else in the biz voted him in that ESPN poll, and in general just a misinformed reputation of him, not sure any team will give him anywhere close to that. In a fun turn of events, his negative reputation versus reality might be good.

He wouldn't be the first guy to over estimate his free agent appeal.

Marty Biron did that in summer 2009, and was never a starter again.

After the kind of game Neuvirth had against the Blackhawks, it definitely wouldn't be a good idea to trade Mason away.
That and I don't believe Anthony Stolarz or Alex Lyon are ready to be the backup this season in Philadelphia.

At this point Neuvirth is a quality backup for Philly nothing more. Neuy wouldn't be able to handle the riggers of a full NHL season as a starter. If one of Philadelphia goalies were to be traded, I'd rather it be Neuvirth to LA as a stop gap until Quick's return from injury.

I mentioned Mason and Neuvirth to LA before. It makes sense, but I don't see it happening.

I really do think Kuemper makes the most sense.
Kuemper for Zatkoff + 3rd + Conditional 5th (if he wins XX games)

Mason for Coyle (presumably in January 2015) would have been a steal for the Flyers given how little value goalies usually have. Hard to believe that was really on the table.

Besides the money, if Minny was going to cough up Coyle, who would LA be giving up? We don't have the assets to give...

This can't be stated enough. The Kings need to keep all the assets they have and cross their fingers that some of them turn into NHL players because we don't really have the cap space to improve the team any other way.

what's mason's contract like? would LA waste real assets to acquire him just to lose him in expansion?

Flyers have goalie prospects in the pipeline but i don't see the need to do this. I'd rather Stolarz and Lyon get more experience and let Mason and Neuvy battle for a contract this year with Philly.

Out of curiosity though, what would Mason's value be?

Hypothetically, I think Pearson would be a good comparable to Coyle. But trading Pearson wouldn't make much sense for the Kings, especially after losing Lucic.

If DL traded Pearson for any goalie he should be fired instantly. At some point he needs to look at things with clear mind and know this team needs a rebuild. Our window is slammed shut with this roster.

This is what I'm on board for. Go full Leafs/Oilers/Buffalo!

100% agree. DL did a great job bringing cups to LA but he needs to quit chasing with this roster.

Mason has been better than Quick the past 2 seasons.

The game is called hockey. There is no way he was better than Quick last year and you never watch Quick by that silly statement.

GMs are prone to making poor decisions that are based more on a player's reputation formed years ago, than their current form.

You clearly did not watch Quick play last year he was very much on top of his game.

Mason put up better number the past two years and didn't play for the best shot suppression team in the league. Quick is overrated.

Let me guess, it's because of Quick that the Kings effectively suppress shots?

You should probably watch Zatkoff in his 2 starts this year to see how wrong your statement is.

I'm not going to touch the Quick/Mason thing, but the reality is, the Kings don't have the expendable assets to acquire the Flyers #1, even if they were interested. Especially seeing as how the Flyers would be forced to retain to even try to make it work from a Kings perspective.

I don't care who is reporting it - It doesn't work, unless its part of a much larger deal, which I cant see to be the case.

Trading Mason would not be the worst thing, especially if he is asking for 6+. The Flyers have a deep talented goalie prospect pool to buffer his loss.

Neuvirth makes more sense IMO.
