He's over paid by about 3M. Is 3M of cap space worth a 1st round pick?

Honestly I would argue Brown is only over paid by about 1.8 million

Brown was coming off a 22G 54P + another 20P in the playoff's. His prior cap hit was 3.1 million.

There is no way Lombardi gets Brown resigned for under 4 million cap hit coming off a season like that. So is Brown really 3 million overpaid ?

Would be interesting to look at 3.5-5 million dollar forwards(with Brown like History), see what they are paid, and producing.

Brown is 32 and signed for another 5 seasons. Yes, it is worth getting out of it. He's averaged 11 goals and 27.5 points over the past two seasons. Not sure where he finishes with this season, but his contract does not match up with his production.

They also are stuck with a 34 year old Gaborik for another 4 seasons. One of them has to go.

Sadly,

Brown is 4th in forward scoring atm, Hopefully Toffoli catches fire.

Would also be nice to see Pearson produce more.

Trevor Lewis has matched his point total of last year already, with 32 games left in the season.

If Budaj was 24 years old instead of 34, would Quick be shopped around?

I guess it would depend on how Budaj was brought up through the AHL, and draft/skill pedigree

If Budaj was 24 years old, and had an AHL season like he did last year(also playing like he is currently). I would argue Lombardi would probably at least listen to offers on Quick.

Although the offers, would probably be lousy.

I do wonder if another team comes around to offer Budaj a somewhat respectable raise over what he's earning right now. I'd love to see him back as the #2 goalie behind Quick next season, but I would think a team desperate for goaltending might offer up more than a one-year deal and a better opportunity.

Then again, Budaj also has to think about playing behind a bad defense that could potentially force him back down in the AHL, like what happened in Winnipeg.

Exactly. Budaj would be wise to realize that he needs to play on a team with a good defense or else his NHL resurgence will be short lived.

Kings need a backup.

Sounds like a match.

Sign Budaj to a a 2 year deal worth ~800K/year.

That's what I'm afraid of. There's a fine line between success and failure. The impact of top goaltending coaching from Ranford and Imoo and the excellent defensive system of Kings and the Reign cannot be underestimated. I don't want to have Budaj go through a Scrivens-like path to the KHL.

ETA: or what John said.

He'll be 35 at the start of next season, his NHL resurgence will be short-lived no matter what. If he's wise he'll take the money and run.

It's about that time we gotta start rooting for some other teams, too! Busy night:

ANA @ TBL
PIT @ STL
DET @ NSH
CHI @ DAL
MIN @ VAN
ARI @ SJS

Fun stuff to watch :)

Every game went our way, except the ducks and sharks each picked up a point in the shootout. Still, A good day overall.

Budaj will take whatever he can get at this point in his career. If he keeps putting up decent numbers, he could be looking at 1mil, 1.5mil for a couple seasons as a backup, though likely not with the Kings.

Nah. If he's solid he could play into his late 30's. It will be in his own interest to play for a team with a good defense to help pro long his career as much as possible. Term is what will be important to him.

No way. You take the money and run.

No way. You take the money and run.

I think it's both. He takes the money and runs AND gets security by signing, say, a 3 year 4.5 million deal instead of a 1 year 3 million deal. Note: numbers completely made up for illustration, not actual worth

No way. You take the money and run.

What money? He's a 35 year old career back up. There's no real cash out to take. Pro longing his NHL career as long as possible is in his best interest.

For example if he takes a 1 year deal at 1.75M with the Avs, he'll get lit up and his career is over. If he takes 2 years with the Kings at 900K per year, he'll probably put up decent numbers and may still get another contract offer after the deal is up.
