I knew he wasn't going to score but

I thought he'd at least throw some hits and beat some people up and be a good 4th liner

He's miserable, can't keep up with the play to hit anyone in any way that matters, can't win a fight, doesn't stick up for others

Basically the worst kind of 4th liner to have, the goon plug burnout special

But hey didn't stop Blake from going all PLD/Edmundson on him throwing out assets out of nostalgia on a scouting report from 2020
This is the concerning part. Blake can't evaluate players at their current level when trading for them.

Edit: Trading for Jeannot was one problem. Valuing him at a 2nd & 4th is another issue.

I'd say that hit in the Ottawa game mattered and he is leading the team in hits while pacing for 283 over 82 games. The Kings haven't had a player over 200 hits in the Bluc era and a forward hasn't led the team in hits since Brown in 2018. Last season with someone over 200 hits was 2016 with Lucic, Brown and McNabb all over 200 and Muzzin right there at 197.

Different game now? Sure, but it isn't so different that the Kings should be having someone with 150 hits be the team leader for the majority of the Bluc era. The issue with Jeannot is they needed this type of beef years ago if they wanted to win in whatever this window was that Bluc thought was open but they waited to address it after they blew all of their assets and cap.

I'm mostly upset with how he has looked in his fights since this is a guy that can take on a Reeves type and he looks silly against Luke Schenn and, even worse, MacEwen. That said, we watched Connor McDavid collect a bounty on Anderson two minutes into a game that was only a couple of weeks away from the playoffs when it looked pretty certain that the two teams would be meeting and the Kings did jack shit about it except get blown out of the arena. Now I've got Anderson taking a harmless hit and two Kings laying a hit on the guy and Jeannot starting a fight with him.

I want the youth on this team to be immersed in a culture that does that and not the bullshit pacifist crap we've seen pretty much since Bluc took over. These guys have to care about one another enough to put their health on the line or they will never win a thing: I am very encouraged by what I've seen in that regard compared to the last eight years or whatever we've been suffering through.

The organization thinks Jeannot is the type of player you need to "win in the playoffs." Never mind Tampa actually had to scratch him in the playoffs.
'
This team needs a different mindset to win in the playoffs. Hell, it just needs a different attitude and mindset period. This is where Jeannot, Burroughs, and Edmundson come in. Even Lee making the team out of camp and trying to fight when it is obvious he doesn't know what he is doing.

This team had a lack of showing up problem and has been far too content to hope that a game doesn't get too heated. Less talent on paper this year but they aren't winning three-to-five years from now if they don't start getting these young guys the proper attitude to win in this league.

But see @BigKing there's the problem.

The Kings brought in those guys (Jeannot, Edmundson, Burroughs) in an attempt to win NOW.

The King plan isn't to wait "three-to-five" years.

I'm all for team toughness, but the Kings main problem is they're not talented enough to contend. And they don't have enough in the pipeline to make them a contender in the next 5 years.

Luc thought Jeannot was going to score 15 goals.
might you have a link to that? After Luc's glazing of PLD and how he'd help the team prior to last season, you'd think he'd have the sense to not open his mouth on these things. The Kings pro scouting dept has to be one of the worst in the NHL.

I had very low expectations for Tanner -- no offense but at least would bring a solid tough guy 4th liner presence that likes contact and won't let other teams bully us all game.

Apparently i did indeed have TOO HIGH expectations for him.

It might be this interview:

But in typical NHL/Kings fashion, you can't actually watch it anymore lol

He has been lackluster since the preseason where he looked like a good fit, though he was used a little bit higher in the lineup. He certainly isn't helping his contract value, which I hoped would motivate him to put up some career numbers. I mean, there are worse guys to have on your bottom 6 even with the lack of production, and having him for toughness' sake does have value, but I definitely expected more. There's still some time for him to salvage it though.

This. Though Jeannot didn't get going with McEwen or Schenn - he has 3 fights and leads the team in hits. I haven't seen a situation like that in awhile where a Kings top player takes a hit (Anderson) and Tanner immediately challenges Foligno. Englund did it last year - I remember the fight with Hague after the slash on Laffy, but that was rare the past few years.

There is also things Jeannot is doing on the bench if you watch him - he is a presence. His teammates seem to really like him especially the young kids. Tanner also has 1 goal, that is one more than Byfield.

It's his first year here and back in the West. I would give him until game 40. Either way, he is def a culture changing player.

The only way I see the Kings walking from Tanner is letting Helenius play on the 4th line next year. Otherwise, I would re-sign him.

Also, I would rather have Jeannot, Foegele, and Edmundson than PLD - basically same price for those three.

BTW, all Schenn's punches hit him in the visor and McEwen got him all twisted. Jeannot edged out Foligno so his record is 1-2-0, but I would really call those two losses barely losses. We are not talking about Buchberger, Rychel, or Cowan here - Jeannot can fight.

Brendan Lemieux was one of my fav Kings and he didn't win every fight and he still did his job.

You insinuate there is an actual plan.

That is partially tongue-in-cheek, but that's the thing: they aren't winning now with or without these guys. They did finally identify--hopefully too late to save their jobs--that this team's culture was trash. Blake went hard in to the paint on this team's softness but that's been lost a bit due to Luc's insane comments in the same press conference.

I'll take one year of this and hope it helps in three-to-five years. I don't know what the future holds in three-to-five years but I do know I want Clarke, Byfield, Spence, Laf, Turcotte, Zeimmer, Greentree etc...to grow together in a legit culture as opposed to what the youth has been getting thus far.

No time like the present to change the culture.

I think ultimately, the point is to instill a mindset of assertiveness and to instill a culture of toughness, whether that's the actual plan or not. Even if it's a happy accident, there is some value to what they bring.

Not to be too self-aggrandizing and keep bringing it up, but Luc told me when I talked to him.

I have it recorded.

I don't necessarily disagree with this, but claiming the team has a "lack of showing up problem" is nebulous fan speak.

If anything, the Kings over achieved against the Oilers.

Kings can have all the team toughness they want, and it won't matter if they don't have the talent.

You're not winning didly-poo when you're #1 center is in his mid 30's.

He is useless--extremely limited in mobility, seems few steps behind nearly every offensive play.

I have no idea how Nashville used him on PK with his skating.

No offensive ability; the 24 goal stat is surreal, I think the 5-7 goals is a realistic expectation. He will hit hard if he catches you, however, the chances of that are slim.

He is 5-4 in fights going back a calendar year with some head-scratching Ls. I'd say he is your below average bottom six guy. More often than not he looks AHL caliber.
JBB and scouts didn't do their job and he was tricked into spending half a farm on Jeannot and announcing him as a "fast player" in a media scrum.
As far as him being a good locker-room guy or being a presence on the bench--he wasn't in Tampa as far as I can tell. Maybe things are different in LA. In a very physical PO game vs the rival Panthers, he was invisible when Panthers were running amok. He ended up being scratched the very next game, I believe.

I think the hope was he would pan out as (poor-mans) Tom Wilson, while in reality he is poor man's Mathieu Olivier.

Funny Jeannot story. I had on his jersey last night and got a tug on my arm by a women in the private club downstairs and she said that’s my husband.

Still liking his game - he makes the Kings nasty and gives us a villian.

Maybe sitting a few games will hopefully have the same effect it had on Fiala. All I want is a guy that can take a regular 4th line shift, play heavy and stand up for teamates. He should be able to do that. Not sure where his head is at

Would be cooler to have a villain who didn't lose every fight and only threw borderline hits because that's all he can land when constantly chasing the play

I like nasty. I don't like complete liability.
Nearly all of those guys throw borderline hits. I’d say every one of them but then I’d get someone giving the outlier examples. If we ‘want’ a genuine enforcer type then you have to accept the crappy hits. It why I laugh at the daft notion that fighting protects anyone as banning fighters would make the game much safer as a whole.

I guess my point was less that he's throwing those kind of hits and more that he's throwing them because he can't catch anyone

He's clearly not an enforcer since he can't win a fight. If we just needed an enforcer that can't play, I'm sure Reaves or similar would have been cheaper.

If we just needed a guy to be physical and won't fight much, there are plenty of guys on the rat spectrum in the league these days, but I'm sure a Clutterbuck type is available.

If we needed an absolute nuke to be a part time player, well, we had MacDermid.

Jeannot does none of the above. Can't play. Can't win a fight. Just takes ill advised penalties because the game is too fast for him.

IMO, guys that can't take a regular shift without hurting the team don't add to team toughness.

Jeannot is leading the team in hits (top 10 in the league) and he can play. He's a way better player than Reaves, Lemieux, or MacDermid (even though he is a D).

15 games, 1 goal, 1 assist and 3 fights and 8th in hits with 47. That is fine with me.

Danault and Moore only have one goal and people aren't all over them.

Tanner was acquired to be a bad guy and change the tone of the team - he has done that. Last nights hit proves it. He stood up for Mikey Anderson - FINALLY someone does and also taken out Zub and Boesner.

Andre Lee has 0 goals, can't fight and is -4. Why aren't fans all over him?
