Player Discussion Kiefer Sherwood

Sherwood is at 115 hits through 18 games thus far this season, on pace to smash the NHL single season hits record of 383 set last year by Nashvilles defenseman Jeremy Lauzon. Kiefer has been a one man wrecking ball this season. Not only has Sherwood been a train, he looks fantastic as Pettersson's winger right now finding his offensive touch.

Love him but you cant sign a payer like him to more than 2-3 years. His style tends to fall of a cliff fast.

I wonder what his baseline is. We know/assume he can't continue that hitting pace, but can he still maintain that 45ish point pace while still being a disturber?

Last year we had a bunch of guys who really prospered under Tocc's system at the beginning that eventually plateaued (i.e.. Lafferty, PDG). Hope Sherwood is not going to follow this pattern.

Well I think Sherwood's pace will slow down (otherwise he would be smashing records) but that is different from saying his body would break down. I think Clutterbuck is the best comparison. The others are D or bigger forwards.

Looking at his splits from last season he had 5 goals and 10 points in the first 20 games which is identical to this season with 2 less games played. The next 20 games however he only had 1 assist. He went all of December and January with just 1 assist. So I guess we’ll see.

I mean, who looks like they deserve Debrusk’s contract: him or Debrusk. Watching them on the same line with Petey and it’s a staggering difference.

What a bizarre split. He then finished the year with 16 points in his last 28 games as well, so he had two chunks of 40 point level play along with that huge slump. I wonder if something was going on. He actually did miss a chunk of time toward the end of the slump

Looks like a lot of his goals last season came against low-standing teams.

I don't think his splits mean much in a vacuum. Last year was his first full fledged year as an NHLer, outside of 50 games his rookie year. He's had a journeyman career spent with only a smattering of NHL games across a few seasons before last season. And 3/4th line energy guys tend to run hot and cold generally. Suter had 2 good quarters sandwiching 2 other not so good ones as well.

What obviously stands out to me beyond his physicality is how well he thinks the game. When he has the puck, he's ahead of the play and knows what play he wants to make.

His hockey IQ is a level or two above Debrusk and he can aid in making plays, rather than be a guy that can finish off one when set up like JDB. I think that will help Pete on that line.

Sherwood obviously has some good skill, a star AHL player his last 3 seasons there. I guess the question is whether he can keep leveling up at 29, but if he can prove himself to be a complimentary top 6 guy that can provide tons of physicality and strike fear into his opponents, that's a big win at 1.5M.

Here we are shitting ourselves all year last year that we needed to get a winger for Petey and it turns out it was Chief Kief all along hahahahahaha. He's been so good on that line. Such a smart player.

Allvin, please consult with Hughes on all future roster moves. Ty.

He’s the best signing this offseason and what we hoped Heinen would be in the lineup. He looks to be a mainstay in the top 6 until Lekkerimaki matures.
