KHL Expansion part IV (Mod warning post 760)

Because, unlike some European on this board I genuinely think that a KHL team in a country will extend/expand the interest of the sport. Especially for a small hockey country.

Depends very very much. A KHL team in England would get 0 media spotlight, and the very very very vast majority would have no idea the country had a team. Do you think a baseball team would get a lot of attention in Russia if they placed one there? If noone gives a **** about the sport, media will not report about it, and people won't care.

In Norway, they might report about it.

I think that a KHL team in UK will have its share of spotlight in media. Of course, for doing this that team will need major investment at the start and to attract at least one-two big names. Maybe a Russian owner, but this don't think will be the hardest thing to do.

For example they have good attendance (considering the level of British Hockey League) and some matches are on SKY Sports.

Of course, this doesn't mean that a KHL team in UK will attract more stories than football, horse racing, rugby, cricket, UK sports, but as there's a place in the media for all of these sports, will be for hockey also.

I could mention here the case of road cycling, where the interest in the media was marginally. But as Mark Cavendish started to get some wins in UCI Pro Tour and especially in Tour de France, then the creation of Team Sky, followed by Bradley Wiggins overall win in TDF, everything has changed.

Only if it was placed in a town without a major football team, and then only the local media would care.

Atlant, Spartak, Novokuznetsk might leave KHL, Lada/Sochi/Jokerit are in.

and maybe the norwegian team. Btw how do you know about Atlant and Novokuznetsk? Has there been any announcements of any sort about this?

Definitively NOT true. I dont know if you ever heard of Manchester Storm. They were a club active 1995 - 2002 with a strong team filled with mostly NA players. In that time when Manchester united was huge in results and attendance, and the huge attendance of Manchester city, they filled the Manchester arena with 17,200 people against Sheffield Steelers. Their avg attendance of around 10k was huge in a football town where hockey is supposed to be extremely marginal. They had results aswell in the EU hockey league beating Sparta Prague 7:0 in England and 4:3 in Prague, and a regulation time draw vs Dynamo Moscow. So they had results. The fan base was so big and so loyal that when the owner let the team collapse, they tried to resurrect the club, but later renamed it Manchester Phoenix that still plays today albeit in EPIHL.

Why did the owner let the team collapse if it was so successful? Few games with huge attendance means nothing by the way. More often than not it's some gimmick game. But you can keep thinking England cares about hockey. I'm sure that's why their league is so good, right?

He did it out of spite. He got into an argument with the league and because of some league demands he told them to stuff it. Case of a big ego, but this is irrelevant for this discussion.
I think you didnt read my post to say what u said. So let me give you the stats again without text maybe it will make it clearer:
17.2k at a league game vs Sheffield Steelers which was than the record in Europe.
Avg attendance 10k in all but the first season which was only 6.5k (7/8 years)
So how did you get from this that it was a gimmick game and it was a lone case when you are just assuming?

funny how you like to twist things to your benefit right?:) who the hell cares what the issue was or your statement. You said KHL quality team in England in a city with a permier league football team and that nobody would watch/care about it. The Manchester Storm is the exact analogy to that with two football teams.

If we bring up crappy leagues noone cares about lets talk Ukrainian hockey league:) by that definition noone should care about Donbass or it should have any coverage than. wow lookie here it does ;D Hell the arena is actually to small now so they are makeing a bigger one. Pls make some valid arguments here dont bring in facts irrelevant to the discussion. Because i could easily bring in Medvescak here to defeat any of your arguments aswell.

"Sochi Leopards"? Don't we have three teams named after snow leopards already?

Well yes, kind of, but there's a big difference between Bars/Barys and Leopard, especially phonetically and I guess it's all that matters. But yeah, cats of all kinds are getting pretty boring.

I can't see why club names should be that flat anyway.

I'd prefer a name somehow connected to the history of the city but I guess there's not much in the past to name the team after.

Yeah... especially when the logo is a polar bear.

On this other miserable hockey forum someone once nicely explained their logo I think. I might be wrong, but as I recall it was a Tractor back in the day. The current logo was designed by some swiss people (or some foreigners) as I recall.

Original logos of Traktor:

The polar bear one was designed by the Swiss at Spengler Cup-93, and it looked like this:

More logos are here

I agree, it really looks strange to have a polar bear and the "Traktor" caption below, but Traktor is already a popular brand around Russia and esp. the Chelyabinsk region, so neither the name nor the logo will be changed. At least now.

Пока мы не ведём переговоров. Юридически нам не нужны никакие согласования, но в духе сотрудничества мы готовы обсуждать эту тему с целью создания условий для развития хоккея в России.

While we do not negotiate. Legally we need no agreement, but in the spirit of cooperation, we are ready to discuss this topic with the aim of creating conditions for the development of hockey in Russia.

Using translate it's not so clear if Valerenga is able to have the financial resources to play in KHL at the moment and if they've submitted to KHl their application.

Curious to see if 3 teams are going to leave... Spartak is almost sure, even if some official said on their website that the team is not disbanded and the players are on holiday.

But the potential trouble for Atlant is quite a shock, as they were OK all season with good results and they have a good attendance even if their arena is not the most impressive.

For me is not strange how the things are going at Metallurg Novokuznetsk, but the fact that in a city like this, where you don't have a lot of things to do, they couldn't fill their arena even when they've played Dynamo, SKA, CSKA and other big boys...

I personally think that the KHL needs a second club from a country that already participates in the KHL. A little bit more than a year ago Medvedev came to Bratislava to watch Slovan-SKA game and he said in an interview, that he would like to see a Slovakian derby in the KHL. He is a business man and he understands why he said it, the country would go crazy about it and the media would talk about it for days before and after the game. The KHL would get enormous advertising and the tickets would be sold absurdly fast + even more people from that country would be interested in KHL. Yes, not every KHL country is strong enough to have 2 teams, but the ones that can would make it an amazing experience. I'm thinking of games like Slovan-Košice, Lev-Brno, Minsk-Babruysk, or Donetsk-Kiev. Any opinions?

how would this team do in KHL? (fantasy roster)

lindström - ericsson - möller
kolarik - holloway - bellmare
melker - rasmussen - arvidsson
brodin - lundqvist - hedman (checking-line is needed, and this guys can play also)

murphy - salmela
alm - burström
hersley - rahimi

tellqvist
svensson
