How is it not an improvement? Their better goalie between Demko and Markstrom now gets more time to play, and if need be they still have a starter. And that guy won’t complain.

They replaced a goalie with a worse goalie. That is not an improvement no matter how you want to spin it. It is also at least very debatable that Demko is better than Markstrom. He certainly hasn't shown that he is. The Canucks have not improved themselves.

And yea, they fixed the 2C hole. What else? 2RW (or 2C if they could magically acquire Cirelli) is a hole. Cozens can eff off from that. Earn it, not get gifted it. An entire third line still needs to be acquired. Ryan-Wennberg-Kahun/Tage sounds like that problem gets fixed (and look, outside of Kahun we know that line gets paid out 5M for next year).

I didn't say the Sabres fixed anything. I said that adding Staal was an improvement to the level of most any other move made this off-season. This conversation should be really simple. You lamented Adams not fixing the roster yet. I am saying that hardly any team if any at all can say they have yet fixed their roster.

I’m sure Adams is a pretty smart guy and has all kinds of plans but he is quickly learning that Buffalo is just not a destination for UFA’s and so many players have NTC with Buffalo at the top of the list. It makes for a very difficult job. Sabres need to build through the draft and unfortunately Murray and Botterill burned through so many draft picks. We are already missing 2 picks for NEXT years draft. Complete mismanagement of assets.

Fortunately not many teams have cap so that puts beer goggles on some UFAs and turns Buffalo into the belle of the ball, or the last call charity case

I’m not going to beat up our new GM too much at this stage. He was left with a shit sandwich by the two previous GMs’ mistakes. Its going to take a lot of work to fix it.

He’s going to make mistakes and the job in front of him for next season’s team leaves him little room for error.

The one regret I have for Kevyn so far is that he couldn’t get more draft capital to help build up our pipeline which we need in the worse way. Unfortunately for KA, Botterill didn’t leave him much in terms of assets to use to build the capital with.

Adams is starting off with a worse situation than Botterill started off with.

The bar was set so low after Botterill it should have been impossible not to clear it.

Adams dug a trench under the bar

Didn’t realize the season started tomorrow.
Don’t inject rational thought.

We’re no worse right now than we were before the offseason started. Larsson is a loss. But we’re probably a bit better with Staal filling our biggest hole. But still need more work to be done.

The first step to fix it needs to be opening the fridge door. We haven't seen the finished product, but he's currently headed back to the bathroom and I'm afraid he's going to come back with the same product as the last GM.

Offseason is not over, but he's not showing reasons for optimism.

Staal-Good
Larsson- Bad
Eakin-Bad
Kahun-Possibly bad
Irwin-Meh
Reider-Meh

If he signs hall to a reasonable contract, we will certainly be a better team, but it still won't be an indication that he knows what he's doing. I'm half expecting one decent signing, and then a parade of people mocking the negativity saying "see he had a plan all along, relax", as if knowing Taylor Hall is good or as if knowing 4 RD is too many shows some sort of competence.

The team could be better with a couple moves, but the current results suggest a process that isnt very good.

Where we were before the offseason: were unable to qualify for a 24 team playoff despite Jack having a season where if he was on a non dogcrap team he finishes high in the Hart voting and possibly wins it. And I'd argue losing Larry effectively cancels out bringing in Staal. Oh, and the fact that they outright lied to everyone when they said they were going to use advanced metrics.

No losing Larry does not cancel out Staal.

I wasn’t expecting much in free agency besides what we’ve done (depth signings) We’re just not a desirable location. Maybe that changes as things shake out but I have no expectations for Hall or any other top free agent to come here.

Our best bet will be trading after teams have locked up much of their cap space. No idea what success he’ll have there. We don’t exactly have a lot of assets to throw around. Hopefully Montour’s deal is to facilitate a trade.

Right, there should be opportunities for trades. But even if we say no one we would have wanted wanted to be in buffalo, despite signing with other lousy teams, would you not prefer we try to trade for another C before signing Eakin, who buy all accounts, eye test and numbers, isnt very good? Or just re-sign Kahun?

I know we're not a destination, but I find it hard to believe no one who fans may have wanted would agree to sign here, when most have signed for cheap. I find it hard to believe that there's not a potential trade target for cheap that is better than Eakin.

Well I’m certainly eating crow on Hall not wanting to come here.

The Krueger affect was real.

And I realize how miserable some of my arguments sound, I'm not trying to be a buzzkill I just wish we could discuss things past a reaction on whatever the most recent move is, good or bad. (Not speaking to you specifically Josh.)

I'm a little confused at how suddenly Adams is perceived as great for this move. Its a no-brainer on the Sabres side of things, the question was always whether or not Hall would want to come here. Its certainly a signing that improves the team but Adams didn't really have to do anything, other than offer it which is him just doing his job and not being negligent.

The team is undeniably in a better place from signing, which is the GMs job, but I'm not sure how much credit he personally deserves for offering the contract. Again, I'm really not trying to be negative just to be "that guy" but I don't know if this changes my opinion of Adams.

Adams these days were constantly presented with claims why he did not return Kahun, who could have earned 4 million in arbitration, why he did not return Larsson (maybe they wanted to), and Larsson himself confirmed that there was an interest. The answer is obvious - Taylor Hall.
